Driving into work that morning Marie had never been so happy in her life. Feeling refreshed after a two-week holiday in Mexico with her boyfriend Terrance, he had finally asked her to move in with him but only after he had spoken to his family about it.

Marie parked her car in the underground car park and began to make her way towards the few of co-workers that were waiting for the lift.

“Marie!” Her friend Donna cried when she saw her approaching. “I’m so glad your back, I’ve got so much to tell you.”

“I have too.” Marie beamed as she hugged Donna, she could see her friend was bursting to tell her news. “Go on, you tell me yours first.”

Donna took a step back, held her left hand out and wiggled her fingers. “Notice something big and shiny?” She flicked her hair off her shoulders and smiled the biggest smile.

Marie gripped Donna’s hand and gasped at the huge diamond ring on her wedding finger. “Rupert’s finally proposed?” She asked tears welled in her eyes as she looked up at Donna, she’d never seen her friend look so happy. “That is the best news ever, I’m so happy for you.”

“Thank you.” Donna moved her hand away and pressed the button for the lift again, it still hadn’t arrived. “So, what’s your news?”

“Not as fantastic as yours.” Marie sighed, noticing there were two women who were also waiting for the lift that was a little too close to them she held Donna’s arm and moved away from the women. “Terry is going to finally tell his parents about us and wants us to move in together.”

Donna’s eyes widened. “It’s about time he stood up to his father, I don’t know if I could have coped with two years of hiding your relationship from his family.”

“I know.” Marie shrugged. “But I love him and it’s been worth the wait.” She smiled.

Marie and Donna turned to see what the sudden thundering sound that was echoing through the parking lot was. “What the hell!” Marie cried over the noise of a large motorbike making its way towards the far corner to park up.

Donna linked her arm into Marie’s as they began to walk back towards the lift. “That’s our new I.T guy Eric that started last week, he’s covering for Steve while he recuperates.”

“Recuperates from what?” Marie shrugged, she didn’t have a clue what Donna was on about.”

“The week you went away Steve was hiking in some mountains and fell, he lay on the mountain with broken bones for three days before he was found.” The lift door began to slowly open. “Quick let’s get in here before he joins us.” Donna wanted to avoid Eric joining them, she pulled Marie into the lift and quickly pressed the button for the doors to close.

As the doors closed Marie watched the tall man dressed in leather take off his helmet as he walked towards the doors. His face was unshaven and his hair was messy, he raised his hands and looked at them with disbelief as watched the doors close.

Marie and Donna stood in silence while the lift took them to the fourth floor of the building. They didn’t like talking around the other workers, they liked to keep their business private because they knew it would become exaggerated gossip by the end of the day. The two girls that were in the lift with them were giggling and talking about Eric, they both fancied him and the way they were talking, it was as if all the other girls in the administration office fancied him too. Marie rolled her eyes thinking how childish they were when she realized that the women had put a fiver each in a pot and whoever got to take him to the works Christmas party would get the money.

After arranging to meet Donna for dinner Marie made her way to the administration office where she worked as a manager. Passing Terry’s office along the way, her heart fluttered when she saw him talking to his father who was a hard man to work for and he looked stressed already. She doubted that he’d be telling his father about them while he was supposed to be working, it would more likely be when his family gathered for their evening meal together.

Walking through the sea of desks in the administration department Marie was greeted with half-hearted hellos and welcome backs from the staff which she responded with a courteous hello. It didn’t bother Marie that the staff didn’t like her very much, she wasn’t there to make friends she was there to work.

Opening her office window to let in some fresh air, Marie turned to see the pile of post that was on her desk. She turned her computer on and sat back in her chair and sorted through the post and placed the ones that looked important to one side then typed in her password on the computer. Marie walked over to the coffee machine and smiled as she turned it on, her assistant had already filled it with fresh coffee and water. Sitting back at her desk, she noticed her computer screen said she had entered an incorrect password, Marie shook her head and typed in her password again then left the office to go and talk to her assistant and give her some of the post to sort out.

Kim, her assistant told Marie what had been going on the past two weeks while she was away. There was nothing much to tell apart from one girl had left so rather than advertise the job, Kim poached her sister from another department to take the vacancy. Marie was fine with that, if Michelle was as efficient as Kim then her department had improved. When Marie went back into her office the coffee was ready, she poured two cups and took one out to Kim then went to sit at her desk. “What?” Marie muttered to herself when she noticed her computer screen once again said she entered a wrong password. She sat back on her chair and thought for a few seconds, she was sure she’d typed it correctly the two times previous, the password was the name of her two cats when she was a child and the door number to her mom's house. Marie sat forward and typed fluffy20millie, she couldn’t believe it when the computer locked her out saying it was a third failed attempt. Marie was pissed off now and rang I.T to ask them why her password had failed and to unlock her computer for her.

The male who answered her call in the I.T department calmly told her not to worry, while she’d been away the business had new servers installed. “I’ll be with you as soon as I can to unlock your computer for you.” He told her.

“I don’t have time to wait about, can’t you just fix it from where you are?” Marie snapped.

“Miss Taylor, you are two floors above me, I can only go as fast as the lift can bring me. I’ll be with you as soon as I can.” The man said then cut the call.

Marie stared at the phone in her hand, “How rude.” She muttered, Stephen would never have spoken to her like that or put the phone down on her.

Twenty minutes later, Marie was standing by the window reading some important paperwork when the door knocked. “Come in,” Marie called not looking up from what she was reading.

“I’ve come to unlock your computer.” Said the new I.T man, Eric. He stood in the doorway and smiled when he saw the girl that he had been in love with all his life standing in front of him. His heart raced as he gazed at the petite figure of Marie dressed in her gray tailored skirt suit with her long black hair tied up in a messy bun, she was more beautiful than he remembered.

Engrossed in the paperwork Marie still didn’t look up from it, she pointed towards the desk. “It’s over there.”

Feeling a little disheartened that Marie hadn’t looked at him when she spoke Eric sighed, he wished he’d not gone to her office now when he could have easily sorted her computer from where he worked. He sat down at her desk and pushed a data stick into her computer and typed in a few codes. “Don’t worry about losing any of your data, once I’ve sorted this for you, it will be like nothing happened,” Eric said, trying to make conversation.

Marie still didn’t make eye contact with him, she walked across the office and stood behind him. “Thank you, I’m pissed off that no one told me about this when I arrived this morning.”

“I guess you must have been away when the new server was installed then?” He asked.

Marie smiled at the thought of her holiday in Mexico. “I’ve been away for two weeks.” Suddenly the familiar smell of leather and motor oil wafted in the air. Marie breathed in the aroma, it reminded her of Eric the boy who lived next door to her when she was younger. When they were teenagers Eric would always be wearing his leather jacket while tinkering with motorbikes in his back garden and when they were fixed he used to rev them so hard the smell of bike fumes and motor oil would fill the air. Marie smiled she hadn’t thought about Eric for years, she used to have so much fun with him when they were younger. Marie walked back to the window and opened it wider, she guessed with the smell that was coming from the man who was sorting her computer out, he was Eric the new guy with the motorbike everyone was talking about.

Marie thought how strange it was that the man’s name was Eric, he rode a motorbike and smelt the same as the Eric she knew, a strange feeling crept through Marie’s body. She looked across the room and shook her head, there was no way he could be the Eric she knew, he was so much bigger built, his white shirt sleeves that were rolled up revealed colorful tattoos that covered his arms which her friend Eric didn’t have, but his hair was the same color and messy like Eric’s always was. Marie’s heart raced as she tilted her head to one side to see his face a little clearer. “Eric?” She whispered.

Eric stopped typing and stared ahead trying to compose himself, his heart thudded in his chest.

Marie took a step forward, she began to shake as she reached out to touch his shoulder. “Eric, look at me.” Her voice shook as she spoke.

Eric turned his chair around and stood up. “Hello, Marie.” He nervously smiled running his fingers through his hair.

Marie gasped and stepped back holding her stomach, so many happy memories of their childhood together came flooding back she could barely breathe, she couldn’t believe Eric Roberts her closest childhood friend was standing in front of her, she hadn’t seen him for ten years.
