Mellissa stood in front of her bedroom mirror in her black skirt and pale blue blouse, the jacket she had recently bought to go with her skirt tapered snugly in at the waist when she buttoned it up, showing her figure off nicely. Taking a long hard look at herself, she wondered if she should put stockings on or go bare legged. After a few seconds of thought, she decided to put her stockings on, they made her legs look slimmer. Taking some time to curl her long brown hair at the ends, she then applied her makeup, natural not slutty, she wanted to give a good impression at her interview. Smiling to herself she put on her black heeled shoes and took another look at herself in the mirror, “that’ll do,” she muttered to herself.

Lighting a cigarette, she stood by her bedroom window, watching the children outside on the street. Her attention was then caught with a commotion going on a few houses away, the chubby girl, Becky, who lived at the bottom of her street was being teased by the other children.

Mellissa shook her head, she knew what it was like to be teased and bullied, she walked downstairs and out through her front door, “OI leave her alone!” she shouted.

The children ran off down the road, leaving Becky in tears. Mellissa walked over to her and took her hand, “come on I’ll take you home.”

Becky looked up at her, still crying, “Mel, why do they keep being so mean to me, I’ve done nothing wrong?”

Mellissa sighed and sat down on a garden wall with her, “they are mean to you because your beautiful and they are ugly.”

“I’m not beautiful,” she cried, “they say I’m a fat freak,”

“Listen to me, I know what it’s like to be teased, I was so skinny when I was your age everyone teased me saying I looked like a stick insect. They said they would snap me like a twig if I told anyone what they said to me, and do you know what made it worse?”

Becky sniffled and shook her head.

“I used to wear glasses so thick, it looked like I had jam jars on my eyes.”

Becky giggled, “no you didn’t.”

“Yes I did, if you come and see me one day, I’ll show you some old school photos if you promise not to laugh at them.”

Becky gasped, “noooo, I promise I won’t laugh, can I come and see them after my tea?”

Mellissa took hold of Becky’s hand again, “I should be back home by six, you can come round then if your allowed, now let’s go and tell your mum what’s happened,” she said as she began to walk her home.

When Mellissa got to Becky’s house they walked through the front door together, she was disgusted, the house was filthy. Becky’s mum and dad were both sprawled out on the sofa watching the television. When she explained what had just happened to their daughter but they didn’t seem bothered, they just thanked her for taking her back home and sent Becky to her room.

Mellissa was growling inside by the time she left their house, she felt sorry for the girl and hoped that she would visit her later when she got back from her interview, she wanted to help her.

When she went back to her house to get her handbag she checked her stockings, to make sure they hadn’t snagged on the garden wall she had sat on, she sighed with relief, they hadn’t, she couldn’t have afforded to replace them. As she walked to the bus stop, she checked the time, she had an hour to get to her interview, it wasn’t too far away but she would rather be early than late for it.

While she was waiting for the bus she couldn’t stop thinking about poor Becky, she understood what she was going through. All her young life, Mellissa had been bullied at school because of her geeky looks and skinny body. All the girls developed breasts and curves before she did and that’s when things got worse for her. The girls were complete bitches and they boys here even worse, they used to tease her about her flat chest, the worst boy was one she had a crush on, Andrew Wilson. He would be nice to her sometimes and ask her to sit with him at dinner break, Mellissa would eagerly go and sit with him, but he only wanted her do his schoolwork for him. When his friends joined them he would tell them that Twiggy was his puppy dog and tell her to hurry up because she was embarrassing them all. When she finished his work, he would walk off without thanking her, leaving her in tears.

Twiggy was what everyone at school called her.

Mellissa had no friends and would shut herself in her bedroom every night and study, she passed all of her exams both at GCSE and A levels, every pass was with distinction.

It was when she went to college for business studies and accountancy, when things began to change for her. The main change was her body, she suddenly began to put on weight and her boobs seemed to grow overnight. That’s when the male reaction changed towards her, she was asked out by several of the boys at college, which she declined. Mellissa was cold towards them; her studies were more important to her. The name she was called by males then was fridge or ice queen, girls called her a snob because she wouldn’t mix with them and go out partying but that didn’t bother her, she had been used to being called names all her life.

When she was twenty-one, Mellissa finished college with all A* grades, she was top of everything. Finding work after college was actually quite hard, it seemed like she was over qualified for everything she applied for. She sent hundreds of emails out to different companies with her CV and had been out of work for two years when she suddenly she received an email offering her an interview as a PA at a small company called Wilson’s. She cringed when she saw the email, it was badly written and didn’t even tell her what the company was about, but at the end of the day it was an interview and hopefully she will get the job.

When Mellissa stood outside the building, she nearly didn’t go in. The small red brick building looked derelict, the only indication there was that something was alive in there, were the voices she could hear from the open window above her. Taking a deep breath, she pushed the large old door open and stepped inside.

Walking through the corridor, she found the stairs and walked up them, the voices were getting louder.

“What am I doing?” she muttered to herself.

Suddenly the door ahead of her opened and two men walked out, Mellissa stepped aside to let them pass her then went to the room they had walked out of.

Sitting at a desk was a slim dark haired man about thirty years old, rummaging about on his desk full of paperwork.

“Hello, Mr Wilson?” She said as she knocked on the door to catch his attention.

The man looked up at her surprised, “Who are you?”

This is a great start she thought to herself. “I’m Mellissa Conway, I’m here for the interview.”

The man stared at her for a while then bumped his head with his fist, “Shit, I’m so sorry I forgot about that, come in.”

Mellissa raised her eyebrows at him, she couldn’t believe he had just cursed in front of her.

The man then suddenly realised what he had said, “I’m sorry for swearing, it’s been a stressful day so far.” He walked around the desk and pulled a chair in front of it, “please come in, take a seat.”

Mellissa looked down at the chair there was dust all over it, she wiped as much of it off as she could then sat down. The man sat opposite her, he looked so nervous, she could see he was trying his best at looking professional but had failed badly. His white shirt needed going over with an iron, his tie was crooked, he looked and acted a total mess.

“Right Miss Connor, he said as he straightened some paperwork up, “Tell me why you want to work for my company.”

Mellissa choked a little laugh, “What? First my name is Conway not Connor. I don’t know anything about your company, you saw my CV online and sent me and email inviting me for an interview today, which you had forgotten about and cursed in front of me about it.” She then stood up to walk out, “this is joke, right?”

The man just stared at her, he looked like a naughty boy that had just been told off.

Mellissa sighed, “Are you Mr Wilson?”

“yes.” He answered.

“Well Mr Wilson, thank you for wasting my time.” Mellissa then walked towards the door, she felt disheartened, the whole place was a shambles even the boss.

“Miss Conway,” Mr Wilson shouted as he stood up.

“Yes,” she hissed.

“I’m sorry, I’m new to all this, I’ve never interviewed anyone before, can we try again?”

Mellissa bit her lip, “ok,” she said as she sat back down, she thought she would hear him out but had decided right then she wouldn’t take the job if he offered it her.

“By the way my name is Tony, can I call you Mellissa or Mel?” he smiled.

“Mel will be fine; can I ask you something first?”

Tony tried to straighten the creases in his shirt as he sat down “Yeh sure, what is it?”

“How many people do you have working for you?”

“Twenty so far, why?”

“you have twenty people working for you and you didn’t interview them?”

“No they are all friends and family that work for me so I didn’t bother with interviews, I trust them all.” He said proudly.

“Ok, tell me about your company.”

Tony sat back in his chair and scratched his head, “Well I buy bankrupt stock at a low price and sell it on for a profit.”

“Is that it, how long have you been in business?”

“Two years.”

“Are you thinking of expanding at any time?”

Tony paused for a few seconds and looked around the room, “Maybe, it depends on finances.”

Mellissa felt like she was conducting the interview, he really didn’t know what he was doing and could feel herself getting annoyed with him. “Do you have any questions for me?”

“Well I asked you one earlier and you nearly bit my head off.”

“And with an attitude like that, I’ll be very surprised if you fill the position,” she snapped at him.

Tony then put his head in his hands and exhaled, “I’m sorry, when I saw your amazing CV online, I thought you could help me, I’m drowning here in all this paperwork. I’m out most days with the lads picking new stock up and got no time to do all this,” he said as he swiped some of the paperwork off his desk. “That’s why I emailed you.”

Mellissa rolled her head back and gritted her teeth, “Is it really that bad?”

Tony looked her with desperation in his eyes, “yes, my books are a total mess too, my ex-girlfriend made a right mess of them, I’m sure she did it on purpose.”

“Is she an accountant?”

Tony grimaced, “No, she just did a basic bookkeeping course to help me.”

Mellissa had only been in the office ten minutes and felt stressed already but she had begun to feel sorry for him, “ok, I’ll help you but you better not mess me about with my wages.”

Tony looked up at her wide eyed, “Really?”

“Yes, really,” she sighed.

“It’s only minimum wage.”

“I guessed that.”

“You won’t regret this.”

“I am already,” she said as she stood up to leave. “When do you want me to start?”

“Today.”

“No.”

“Ok, tomorrow then?”

Mellissa shook her head and turned away, “I’ll see you tomorrow at nine,” she then walked out of his office. Just as she got half way down the stairs, Tony stood at the top and shouted her.

She stopped and turned around, “Yes?”

“Thank you,” he smiled.

Mellissa sighed, “That’s ok, I’ll see you tomorrow.” she couldn’t believe that she had agreed to work for him and it was the worst interview she had ever had, but at the end of the day she needed money to live and it was a job but she was going to keep her CV online and apply for other jobs, hoping that something better would come along.
