William Love sat terrified in the back seat of the car, he was blindfolded and didn’t know where he was being taken too or what the month ahead was going to bring. The driver and the man sitting next to him were both silent. He slipped his hand into his thick winter coat to check if his money was still in his pocket, he had one hundred pounds to live on, if he didn’t use it wisely then he would end up starving on the streets. Confusion had also set in, he didn’t know how long they had been driving for, it could have been an hour, maybe it was two, he didn’t know, it just felt like forever to him.

His whole body shook with nerves as he lay his head back on the seat, he knew how cruel his father was but never in a million years did he think that he would do this to him. His thoughts turned to earlier on in the evening when he and his younger brother Peter stood in the dimly lit hallway outside their father’s office, William was twenty-three and Peter was twenty and both were scared of him.

“What do you think he wants us for?” William nervously asked his brother.

Peter shrugged his shoulders, “you’ve most probably done something wrong again,” he grinned.

William shuddered, he felt he was always to blame if something went wrong in the house. Whenever their father screamed and shouted at them both it was always William he looked at.

“Enter,” their father shouted gruffly from behind the closed door.

Both boys walked into the office and stood in front of his desk, their father stared at them both, their mother was standing by him but kept her eyes down, she couldn’t look at her sons.

“I guess you are both wondering what I have called you in here for,” he growled.

They both nodded, “yes sir,” they said in unison.

“In all my years I have never known two people so ungrateful and lazy in my life. I have paid for your education, clothed you, fed you and what have I had in return,” he then paused, “NOTHING!” he shouted.

Both boys jumped and stood straight.

Their father then chuckled, “so now I want you two useless piece of shits to prove to me that you are remotely worthy of being named in my will.”

William looked across the desk at his mother who still wouldn’t look at them, he had over the years begun to hate her.

“William, are you listening to me?” his father asked.

William turned to look at him, he hated him too, “yes sir.”

Their father put some money on his desk, “at six this evening you will both be blindfolded and driven to different locations and left for one month to survive on your own.” He then leaned back in his seat and grinned, “there is one hundred pounds each for you and you can thank your mother for that, if it was left up to me you would leave with nothing. When you leave this house, you do not contact me, your mother or anyone in this family for help. If you run out of money and are hungry you will have to find work, if you are cold and tired, find a doorway to sleep in. I don’t care what you do to survive, steal if you have to but if you get caught we won’t bail you out. In one month’s time you will be picked up from the location you are left at and return home.”

Both boys gasped in disbelief and looked towards their mother, hoping that she would defend them to stop this madness but she still wouldn’t look at them.

William began to shake, “mum, why are you letting him do this to us?”

His mother didn’t answer.

“It will teach you a life lesson and maybe make you appreciate what I have done for you.” his father smirked, “and boys before you leave, there’s one more thing, anyone you meet, don’t tell them who you are, your surname is Smith not Love. This arrangement is just between the four of us, it’s not for the world to read in grubby newspapers.”

William watched his younger brother grab his money off the desk and run out of the office. He then looked at the clock on the wall, it was now five thirty, he took his one hundred pounds off the desk and glared at his father, “you may have provided for us but I would have swapped all of that for just one bit of affection,” he then glared at his mother, “are you seriously going to let him do this to us?” he asked her.

His mother kept her head down and turned away from him, their mother always stood by what their father said or did to them. He often wondered why they ever bothered to have children, their surname may have been Love but that was something they had never felt in their lives.

When William and his brother were young they were separated and sent to different boarding schools, when it was term breaks they would go back to home, they were made to stay in their rooms out of the way, their parents had no interest in them at all, all they were bothered about was looking like the perfect couple and their social life and the boys were there for show whenever they felt like it. The boys had both lived an unhappy, lonely life and they had no bond, they may have been brothers but they were like strangers.

As William walked out of his father’s office, his head was spinning, he really had no idea about the value of money or how look after himself. Deep down he was terrified, he thought he was going to die outside in the cold. He then ran upstairs to his room to change into the warmest clothes he could find.

When six o clock came, their parents were nowhere to be seen, William looked across the hallway at his brother who was shaking and crying, both boys were blindfolded by their father’s security men then taken to separate cars and driven away in different directions.

William was driven to a town centre, the man who sat next to him climbed out of the car and opened his door, William shuddered as he felt a rush of cold air hit his face. The man grabbed him by his arm and pulled him out of the car and took the blindfold from his face. William blinked hard to clear his vision, then looked up at the man who was grinning at him, “meet us here on the first of December,” the man looked at his watch, “at nine pm,” he grinned, climbed back in the car and drove off.

William pulled his coat hood over his head and slid his hands into his pockets, he could already feel the cold. Looking around him he could see what looked like two teenage boys who were drunk and shouting at each other. They made him feel nervous so he walked down a nearby alley to avoid them.

……………………………………………………………

Cherish Harvey had just finished overtime at work, it was getting late now and was looking forward to going home.

“Cherish,” her boss called.

“What do you want now Kev, don’t you think I’ve done enough work today, you slave driver?”

“You call what you do work?” he laughed.

Cherish playfully slapped him, “ermm excuse me, I’ve just done four hour’s overtime for you, anyway what do you want me for.”

“Nick’s home this weekend, I just wondered if you wanted to come out for a drink with us.”

Cherish smiled at her boss, “it would be nice to see Nick again but I really don’t feel like going out this weekend, I need to save up for Christmas.”

“Ok, he did tell me that he would like to see you again sometime.”

Nick was her boss’s son, the last time Cherish saw him they had fun but she wasn’t interested in taking it any further than friendship, “I’m sorry Kev, will you tell him we’ll have a catch up in the new year?” she hugged her boss like she always did when she was leaving and kissed him on the cheek just as his wife walked in.

“Kevin will you put her down, I’m sure you can live without Cherish for the weekend,” she laughed then looked at Cherish, “I’m sure he loves you more than he loves me.”

Cherish let go of her boss and walked over to his wife and hugged her, “Cynthia, I wouldn’t worry too much, I love you more than I love him,” she laughed as Cynthia stuck her tongue out to her husband and hugged her back.

Cherish slipped her coat on and wrapped her scarf around her neck, “well I’m going now so I’ll see you both on Monday.”

Cherish, shivered as she took her first step through the door, it was freezing outside and it was going to get colder, she had heard on the radio that the weather for the next week was going to be below zero.

Walking through the town, Cherish smiled to herself, she loved Kevin and Cynthia, they were like second parents to her. She had worked for them since she was seventeen and for the past six years she had proved herself to be a hardworking loyal employee and they loved her too.

Stopping off at the local chippy she bought herself her usual which was fish, chips and mushy peas with curry sauce poured all over it. Her plans for that evening were to have her food, have a nice hot bath, put her pyjamas on and settle down to watch a couple of DVD’s.

When Cherish walked towards where she lived, she saw two youths shouting and fooling around by the alley she had to walk down to get to her flat. Their presence didn’t bother her too much, there were always youths hanging around the alley. As she walked past them and into the alley, one of the youths grabbed her handbag, pulling her backwards. Cherish held on tight to her bag and turned to face them.

At first she was in shock, she recognised the youth who was trying to rob her, anger set in and she smacked him hard around the head, “Ricky Wood, you better get your ass home and I’m gonna tell your dad when I see him!” she shouted. The other youth who he was with punched her hard in the face, Cherish fell to the ground, dazed but still held onto her bag. Ricky Wood run off but the other youth was determined to take her bag. Cherish kicked out at him then curled her body around her bag, she had her credit card, mobile and money in it and didn’t want to lose it all. The youth began to punch her again.

“Oi leave her alone!” a voice from the end of the alley shouted. The youth run off into the town as Cherish lay on the floor, in tears and gasping for breath.

A young man ran to her, “are you alright,” he asked as he knelt down by her and gently rubbed her shoulder.

Cherish looked up at him, the side of her head was bleeding, “thank you,” she whispered.

“Do you have a mobile so I can call someone for you?”

Cherish shook her head, “I’ll be alright thank you,” she puffed her cheeks and tried to wipe the blood from her face.

The young man leaned over her and took hold of her arm to help her up, “I’ll walk you home, do you have far to go?”

“I live just down this alley above the shops.”

He picked her bag of food up off the floor and walked down the alley with her, “by the way, I’m William.”

“I’m Cherish,” she tried to smile but her face hurt. “so where do you live?”

William sighed, “I don’t live anywhere now, my parents threw me and my brother out on the street, they don’t want us around anymore.”

Cherish gasped, “that’s awful, where’s your brother?”

William cleared his throat, he felt like crying, “I don’t know.”

Cherish’s heart went out to him, he looked so lost and lonely, his whole body was shivering with the cold and she knew the night was going to get colder. If it wasn’t for him helping her, things could have gotten worse for her. She didn’t know if she doing the right thing or not but she didn’t have the heart to leave him outside. She took her door key out of her bag, “well, I can’t leave you out here all night you’ll freeze to death, you can stay on my sofa.”

William stared at her, surprised, she didn’t know him but had just offered to help him.

“Well don’t just stand there,” she said as she opened her door, “you’d better come in before I change my mind and by the way William, you try any funny business with me, I have two big brothers that live around the corner and they will come and kick your ass, that’s after I’ve kicked it, ok.”

“I won’t,” he smiled. He would never do that; he was just grateful for somewhere to stay for the night.
