Lilly-Rose lay in her bed staring at the ceiling listening to her two brothers shouting and stomping around the house and her mother screaming at them to behave. Stretching her aching body, she yawned as she swung her legs off the bed and sat on the edge of it. Rubbing her forehead with frustration, she couldn’t cope with living at home anymore. At the age of twenty-three, she thought she would be living in her own place by now, but she couldn’t afford it. Even though she worked, she had no way of saving money, her mom and stepdad took half of her wages for her board.

Making her way to the bathroom, Lilly saw her fifteen-year-old stepsister, Holly, walk out of her bedroom. Lilly rushed into the bathroom, slammed the door shut, and locked it.

“Hey!” Holly cried banging the bathroom door. “Get yer ass out of there, I need to wash before school!”

“Sorry, work trumps school,” Lilly called back as she squeezed toothpaste onto her toothbrush.

“You’re gonna be a sorry bitch!” Holly screeched kicking the door in temper.

Lilly ignored her sister’s threats; it was the same every morning. After washing and brushing her long wavy mousy blond hair, she applied her makeup and slipped on her black skirt and burgundy cardigan over a white vest t-shirt. After checking herself in the full-length mirror like she did every morning to make sure she looked smart enough for work, she left the bathroom and made her way to her bedroom to fetch her jacket and handbag.

When Lilly entered her bedroom, she froze in shock; her bedroom had been trashed. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked at all her clothes thrown around the bedroom. Nail polish had been dripped over her collection of small teddies in the bedroom window.

Lilly began to shake with nerves, she didn’t like arguing with anyone, but she couldn’t let this go. “Holly!” She cried rushing into her sister’s bedroom.

“What?” Holly grinned picking her schoolbag up. “Has someone been in your room again?”

“You know what you’ve done!” Lilly cried snatching her sister’s schoolbag from her and threw it out of the bedroom window.

“Lilly!” Holly screamed in shock rushing to the window; her sister had never retaliated before to anything.

Lilly leaned out of the window watching the schoolbooks fall out of the bag and spread over the garden. For a strange reason, it gave her a childish satisfaction. Suddenly she felt guilty, she was twenty-three years old and had acted like a child. “I’m sorry,” she blurted. I’ll go and get them for you,” She began to make her way to the door.

“No, you won’t!” Holly growled grabbing her arm and yanked her back. “I’m telling dad of you,” she sneered rushing out of the bedroom.

Lilly knew her stepdad wasn’t home, he was always at work by the time she got out of bed in a morning, but she didn’t fancy her mom screaming in her face for what she’d done. She rushed into her bedroom and grabbed her handbag and jacket.

As she approached the top of the stairs, Lilly froze, her stepdad was charging up the stairs towards her, his face red with anger. He was late for work and was still in the house.

“What do ya think you’re playing at!” He bellowed smacking her hard across the face.

Lilly’s head hit the wall with a thud. “I’m sorry!” She cried in pain covering her head with her arm knowing it would cushion the blow when he hit her again.

“You’re not sorry you spiteful little bitch!” He growled yanking her arms from her head. “If anything’s ruined you can pay for it!” He yelled pulling her towards him squeezing her arms.

“Get off me!” Lilly struggled to get away from him, but he was too strong. “I hate you!” she screamed.

“After all I’ve done for you, you ungrateful bitch!” His eyes flared with anger as he released one of her arms, raised his hand, and smacked her hard across the head again.

Lilly cried in pain as her head hit the edge of the wooden banister and fell to the floor. Curling into a ball she watched her stepdad walking downstairs muttering to himself, he didn’t care if he’d hurt her.

Feeling dizzy as she slowly pulled herself up, she took a few deep breaths as she reached her handbag on the floor; she quietly made her way downstairs and left the house.

Lilly had never felt so low as she did right then as she took a tissue from her handbag and wiped the blood trickling down the side of her face. She didn’t understand what she’d done so wrong in life when all she’d done was try her hardest to please everyone. She’d studied hard at school, passed all her exams and she’d never been in trouble with the police like her stepsister had. A tear slowly trickled down her cheek, she couldn’t even find a decent boyfriend. She thought she’d found her soul mate with her best friend’s brother, Paul, but he’d cheated on her and broke her heart. All she wanted was to be loved.

Knocking on Tina’s back door as she entered the kitchen, Tina was sitting at the table with Paul. Tina’s eyes widened when she saw the state of her best friend with messy hair and blood smudges on her face. “What the hells happened to you!” she gasped standing up. “Oh, don’t tell me, that bastards had a pop at you again!”

Lilly burst into tears, “I can’t take this anymore. One day he’s gonna kill me,” She cried slumping on a chair.

“Bastard!” Paul growled quickly standing up and rushed towards the door,

“Where are you going!” Tina cried grabbing his arm.

“I’m sick of seeing her in that state, it’s got to stop!” he cried yanking his arm out of her grip. “I’m gonna teach him a lesson!”

“No, Paul!” Lilly sobbed shaking her head as she looked up at her tall slim dark-haired ex. “You’ll just make matters worse. Please don’t go round there!”

“Arrghh!” Paul punched the door in frustration, he knew Lilly was right and he didn’t want to cause more trouble for her. He kneeled in front of her and held her hands. “Lilly, I know what I did was wrong, but it doesn’t mean I’ve stopped caring about you. Please listen to me, you’ve got to get out of that house.”

“I will,” Lilly mumbled moving her hands out of his and turned away from him. She didn’t believe he cared about her. He told her years ago he loved her but still cheated on her. But karma had bitten him, the girl he cheated with had cheated on him and now he was on his own.

Paul could see Lilly didn’t believe what he’d just said. He wanted to tell her he was still in love with her and wanted another chance with her but thought against it. She’d only accuse him of wanting her now he and Gemma had finished. “I’ll see ya,” He mumbled taking his jacket from the back of his chair and left the house.

Tina placed a small bowl of warm water with a flannel on the table in front of Lilly. “Get your face washed while I make a brew then on the way to work, we’ll buy a local newspaper to see if you can find somewhere to live.”

“Ok,” Lilly nodded wiping her face with the warm flannel. She was determined to leave home now, but she was scared to live on her own. “Tina,” she quietly said reaching for her makeup in her handbag.

“Yes?” Tina answered as she spooned sugar into the mugs.

“If I do find somewhere to live, will you come and stay some nights with me?”

Tina turned to look at her friend, she loved Lilly and wished she would stop being so nervous about everything, but she understood why she was that way. “Of course, I will, but you’re going to have to start looking after yourself you know. Or you could move in with Paul, I’m pretty sure he wants to get back with you,” she laughed.

Lilly choked a little laugh, “I don’t think I could forgive him for what he did to me.”

“You go, girl, make him suffer.” Tina laughed.

When Lilly and Tina arrived at work, Tina stayed outside to have a smoke with their co-workers. Lilly didn’t join them, she felt unwell. Keeping her head down so no one would see the bruise forming on the side of her face, she walked into the building and rushed to the toilet to be sick.

Still feeling unwell, Lilly’s head ached as she entered the office, she sat at her desk, logged onto her computer and began to work. An hour into work she had a call from her manager, he wanted to see her in his office.

Lilly, thinking she’d done something wrong, nervously knocked on the manager's door and walked in when he called her to enter. The tall, well-built, dark-haired figure of Mr. Martin was standing with his back to her gazing out of the window. “Mr. Martin, you wanted to see me?”

Mr. Martin turned to face her; his heart raced at the petite beauty in front of him. He thought she was the cutest girl he’d ever seen. “Yes Lilly,” he answered gesturing her to sit on the chair opposite his.

Lilly began to feel hot and sick as she sat down and tried to make herself comfortable.

Mr. Martin sat on his chair and tilted his head to get a better look at the bruise forming on her face, he sighed shaking his head. “Lilly-Rose, I know it’s none of my business, but some of your co-workers are getting concerned with the injuries you're coming to work with and.” He stopped talking; she didn’t look well. “Lilly-Rose are you alright?” he asked concerned.

Lilly looked at him with glazed eyes, she could feel her temperature going up, it was too hot in his office. “I’m ok, I fell down the stairs, these heels will kill me one day.” She mumbled.

Mr. Martin stood up and walked around the desk towards her, he knew she wasn’t wearing heels when she walked in. “You’re not wearing heels.”

Lilly looked down at her feet feeling confused, “Oh yes, I had heels on, then changed them because I fell down the stairs.”  She lied taking deep breaths to try and pull herself together. “It’s hot in here, do you mind if I take my cardigan off?”

“If you need too,” he answered beginning to feel more concerned for her.

Lilly slipped her cardigan off and dropped it on the floor, she wiped her hot forehead as she swayed in the chair. Mr. Martin’s eyes widened in shock when he saw black fingerprint bruising on her arms. He kneeled in front of her. “Lilly-Rose, who did this to you?”

Tears welled in Lilly’s eyes as she looked at her manager. “I feel dizzy,” She whispered dropping her head in her hands.

Mr. Martin knew something was seriously wrong with her, he rushed out of his office. “I need a first aider in here now!” he bellowed across the office full of workers. He rushed back into his office and phoned for an ambulance.
