“Lilly-Rose!” her mother shouted from the bottom of the stairs, “It’s time to get up.”

Lilly rolled around on her bed, she couldn’t stand the sound of her mother’s voice first thing in the morning, it sounded just as bad as the racket her two little brother’s made screaming around the house all of the time.

Her mother then shouted her again.

“Ok for god’s sake I’m getting up now,” she called back to her as she pressed her pillow hard onto both ears to drown out the racket of them all.

Getting out of her bed and searching through her clothes, she shivered, it was always cold in her room. Slowly walking across the landing, she saw her sister on her way up the stairs, Lilly ran into the bathroom before her sister could get in there before her, then locked the door behind her.

Her sister started to bang on the door wanting to use the shower. Lilly laughed teasingly from her side of the door as her sister was shouting to their mother that she wanted to use the bathroom first as she had to get ready for school.

“Sorry, work trumps school,” she shouted through the door as she began to brush her teeth. Getting herself dressed and rolling her long hair up into her head, she checked herself in the long mirror to make sure she looked her best for work, like she always did.

When she went back into her bedroom and looked on in horror, while she was in the bathroom her sister had spitefully trashed her bedroom. All her clothes were thrown over the floor and most of her nail polish’s had been dripped over her dressing table. This pissed Lilly off, she was fed up of her sister doing things like this when she couldn’t get her own way.

Lilly didn’t like arguing with anyone but now she had had enough and ran into her sister’s bedroom, “Stay out of my room you little cow,” she shouted. She then grabbed her sister’s school bag and threw it out of the bedroom window.

Watching all of her sister’s books spread over the street outside, for a split second it gave her a childish satisfaction. Then she suddenly felt bad about what she had done, she was twenty two and shouldn’t be behaving like that and tried to apologise but by then her sister was running down the stairs crying to their mother about what she had just done.

Their mother wouldn’t have done anything about it apart from scream at her from the bottom of the stairs. But Lilly didn’t realise, that her step-dad was still in the house, as he was running late for work.

As Lilly returned to her bedroom to tidy it up,she heard someone banging up the stairs behind her. It made her jump as her step-dad grabbed her arm and screamed in her face because of what she had done to his daughter’s bag. She was shaking inside with fear but stared defiantly at him, she didn’t like him seeing that she was scared of him. He then hit her hard around her head, it hit the door frame and the side of her eye began to bleed a little.

This was a normal occurrence in Lilly’s life, his precious children never did anything wrong and it didn’t matter what his daughter had just done to her bedroom.

Holding the side of her face and wanting to cry, she held her head down, then began to walk towards the bathroom to go and wash the blood off. As she passed by him, he grabbed the top of her arm tight, twisted it and pulled her towards him. “Has your mother told you that your rents just gone up another £50 a month?” he snarled at her.

Lilly cried out in pain, “Yes, but I’m going to put it in the gas meter before you get your hands on it for booze.” She screamed at him.

As soon as she said that, she regretted it because she knew that he would hit her again. She wished that sometimes she could just keep her mouth shut.

He then hit her again around the head, knocking her to the floor this time. Quickly jumping back up off the floor as fast as she could she ran down the stairs, she knew that if she had stayed down he would have carried on hitting her.

Running into the kitchen she grabbed her handbag off the side, and saw the shocked look on her mother’s face as she walked past her.

“What are you looking at, it’s not like it’s the first time is it mum?” Lilly shouted at her, then rushed out of the door, slamming it behind her.

Lilly was still shaking inside and could still feel blood running down the side of her face, pulling a tissue out of her bag, she tried to wipe as much off as she could before she reached her friend’s house.

Knocking on her friend’s back door then walking into their house, her hair had now fallen down around her face and she looked a mess. Her friend Tina was sitting at the kitchen table with her brother. Tina’s eyes widened when she saw her friend, “What the hell has he done to you again?” she asked, knowing full well Lilly’s injury would have come from her step-dad.

Lilly burst into tears as she sat down with her friend, “I can’t do this anymore, I’ve got to get out of that house, he’ll bloody kill me one day.”

Tina got up off her chair to comfort her, “Lilly, what are you going to say at work when we get there, people talk about your injuries, you know.”

Lilly sighed and held her head in her hands as her head was beginning to ache, “I don’t know, I’ll just say I fell down the stairs.”

Tina’s brother got up from the table and walked out of the room, mumbling to himself. Within minutes he had put his trainers and jacket on and stormed out of the front door. Tina jumped up and ran out after him and grabbed him by the arm. “Paul, I know where you’re going, but don’t go, it’ll only make things worse for her.”

He turned around to face his sister, “I’m sick of seeing her in that state, it’s been like that since we’ve known her. He needs to be taught a lesson!” he shouted, waving his arms in the air with frustration. He then could see Lilly standing by the front door with a worried expression on her face, shaking her head at him as if to say, not to go around her house.

Paul gritted his teeth and kicked the garden gate, then walked back into the house. As he passed Lilly, he hugged her, “I know we split up ages ago, but it doesn’t stop me from still caring about you.”

She hugged him back and lay her head on his shoulder, “I know.” She sniffled.

Tina made Lilly something to eat, she knew that she wouldn’t have had any breakfast, there was never anything to eat in her house. Lilly washed the small cut by her eye, her face had started to slightly bruise so she covered it the best she could with makeup. She didn’t tie her hair back up, she thought it would be best left it down to help cover her face, then her and Tina began to walk to work.

On their way they stopped off at the newsagents to buy a local paper. Lilly was now going to start looking for a place to live but the thought of living on her own scared her a little.

“Tina, if I do find somewhere to live, will you come and stay some nights with me?”

Tina stopped and looked at her friend, she loved Lilly but she just wished she would stop being so nervous about everything but she understood why she was that way. “Of course I will, but you are going to have to start looking after yourself soon, you know. Or you could move in with Paul, I’m pretty sure he wants to get back with you,” she laughed as she playfully nudged her.

Lilly giggled, and shook her head, “I don’t think I could forgive him for what he did to me.”

Tina linked Lilly’s arm and laughed, “You go girl, make him suffer.”

When they arrived at work, they stayed outside for a cigarette before going in and just as Tina said, co-workers had noticed the mark on her face. They asked her what had happened and she just kept saying that she had fallen down the stairs, she could see that they didn’t believe her.

When they finally went into work, Lilly didn’t feel too well and went to the toilet and was sick. Walking back into the office she knew that she was being talked about which always annoyed her, no one ever noticed her any other time, so why couldn’t they go and find something else to talk about? She put her glasses on, let her hair fall down the sides of her face, logged into her computer and began to work. She still didn’t feel well and her head was beginning to ache all the more.

An hour into work she had a call from her manager, Mr Martin, he wanted to see her in his office. Lilly had no idea what he wanted to see her for and as she approached his door, she looked back at Tina who was watching her with a puzzled look on her face. Lilly shrugged her shoulders at her then walked into the office.

As she walked into the office, the manager was standing with his back to her, looking out of the window. “Mr. Martin, you wanted to see me?” she nervously asked.

He turned around to face her, “Yes Lilly, sit down please.”

She began to shake and feel hot and sick as she sat down.

As he sat down at his desk in front of her, she could see he was paying too much attention to the side of her face, then he looked straight at her, “Lilly, I know it’s none of my business, but I’ve been told a few times just lately from some of your friends out there about the bruises you have been coming to work with and I have actually noticed them myself.” He then looked concerned, “You don’t look well, are you alright?”

Lilly still felt like she was going to be sick and could feel her temperature going up, it really was too hot in his office. She kept her head down and didn’t look at him, “I’m ok, I fell down the stairs, and these heels will kill me one day.”

He looked over the desk, he was sure she wasn’t wearing heels when she walked in, he was right, she wasn’t. “But you’re not wearing heels.”

She looked down at her feet and then started to feel confused, “oh yes, I had heels on, then changed them because I fell down the stairs, then changed my shoes.” She shook her head to try and pull herself together. “It’s hot in here, do you mind if I take my jumper off?” she asked him.

“If you need too,” he answered, he was beginning to feel quite concerned about her now as she seemed to be acting strange.

Lilly pulled her jumper over her head and straightened her hair, she was wearing a short sleeved blouse underneath and as she put her arms down he could see black finger print bruising on her right arm.

He got up from his chair, walked around his desk to her and gently lifted her arm up, “so do your stairs have hands that grab you then?” he asked her.

By then Lilly had turned away from him with tears silently rolling down her face, she was shaking and didn’t seem aware of what was being said to her.

“I feel dizzy,” she said holding her head.

Mr. Martin then felt something was seriously wrong with her, he called for a first aider to come to his office then rang for an ambulance.
