Grey clouds drifted across the dark sky, the waning crescent moon gave little light for anyone to see where they were walking. Marcus gripped his younger sister’s arm marching her through the forest. Her two sisters and several of their friends followed close behind laughing.

“Please Marcus, no,” thirteen-year-old Leah sobbed stumbling on a broken branch and fell forward landing on her hands and knees.

“Don’t be a baby, we’ve all done it and survived,” Marcus laughed grabbing her arm and dragged her through the leaves and dirt to the to the top of the ditch.

“No, you haven’t!” Leah cried, her heart thudded in her chest, she could barely breathe as she stared into the ditch that everyone called the devil's ditch.

All her life she’d heard about the devil’s ditch; the story was, if you ran up and down it six times and shouted for the devil, he would appear. Leah and her friends had been there many times before on Halloween to try and pluck the courage up to do the run but halfway through it, they would climb out of it, too scared to carry on.

“Go on I dare you,” Marcus smirked at his younger sister.

“Go on do it,” Leah’s older sister Kimberley stepped forward. “It’s not like anything’s going to happen, is it?” She slyly smiled. “It’s only a myth.”

“So, what’s the point in doing it then!” Leah cried glaring at her sister.

“There is a point,” Marcus crossed his arms over his chest. “If you don’t do it, we’ll tell dad we caught you shagging Rob in the fields.”

“What, you know that’s not true!” Leah screeched staring wide-eyed in shock at her brother. “Why would you say that!”

“To make you run the devils ditch,” Marcus laughed.

“I’d run the ditch if I was you,” Kimberley sniggered. “Because you know what a beating you’ll get when we tell dad about Rob.”

Tears welled in Leah’s eyes as she stared at her sister in disbelief. “Why are you doing this to me?”

“Cus it’s fun,” Kimberly nudged Rob who was standing next to her. “Isn’t it?” She giggled.

“Yeah,” Rob laughed taking his dick out of his jeans and jiggled it in his hand. “I think your sister could suck dick just as good as you do Kimberley.” He grinned.

Leah couldn’t believe what a fool she’d been. When her younger sister Anna had suggested they go to the devil’s ditch, Leah thought that her and Anna would get as far as the ditch, giggle in fear like they always did while they discussed if they were going to do the run, then return home after agreeing they’ll do it the next year. Never in a million years did she think Anna would set her up and have everyone waiting for her in the forest.

Leah’s heart began to painfully thud hard in her chest as she stared in disbelief at all the sniggering faces in front of her. She already disliked her family but the sudden surge of hate she felt right then for her brother and sisters raged inside her like a spewing volcano. Leah’s body began to shake as she stood up and wiped the dirt off her knees then took a step towards the edge of the devil’s ditch. “Ok, I’ll do it.” She smirked. “And if the devil does appear when I summon him, you’ll all be sorry.” She said pointing to Marcus, Kimberley and Anna.

“Just get on with it will you?” Marcus growled rolling his eyes as he pushed Leah closer to the ditch. Everyone laughed as she stumbled nearly falling into it, but she caught her balance.

“See you in hell fuckers!” Leah called as she ran down the ditch towards the other side. “One!” She called running back down it towards everyone then down again. “Two!” She called. Leah’s head began to feel light as she ran the third time. “Three!” She called as she continued to run. The sound of crunching leaves and small branches as she ran through them grew louder, echoing in her head. “Four!” She called. Out of breath, Leah wanted to stop running, the muscles in her legs were aching but she continued. “Five!” She called gasping for air.

Everyone’s laughter began to slowly fade as nerves set in, they didn’t think Leah would finish the run. Leah’s hair was soaking wet with sweat, her cheeks were bright red. Every time she ran up the ditch towards them, in the faint glow of the moonlight, they could see the steam from the heat of her body rising in the cold air. “That’s enough now!” Kimberley shouted suddenly feeling worried.

“No way,” Leah grinned running back down the ditch to the other side. “Six!” She called dramatically throwing her arms in the air and looking at the sky. “Devil, show yourself, I summon you, come to me!” She demanded.

Everything was silent in the forest, Leah slowly lowered her arms as she looked around her and choked a little laugh, after all the years of her being scared of the devil’s ditch story, she knew now it was only made up to scare people. Hoping that everyone would leave her alone now, she took a step forward to leave and noticed that everyone on the other side of the ditch was staring wide-eyed at her, they all looked terrified.

A cold shiver ran down Leah’s spine when she heard a deep growl behind her. Leah froze. A large arm grabbed her around the waist from behind and raised her off the ground as it began to shake. She helplessly watching her brother, her two sisters and their friends screaming and crying as they were violently shaken to the ground. The ground stopped shaking everything went silent again. Leah sensed something bad was going to happen. “Run!” She screamed struggling to break free from the strong arm that was still holding on tight to her.

There was an almighty explosion, everyone was thrown upwards into the air, trees and bushes were ripped out of the ground and soil scattered everywhere.

Marcus was slammed against a large oak tree; its thick branch impaled his torso. His body twitched as blood poured out of his mouth, his eyes bulged out of his sockets.

Leah watched everyone slam onto the ground, she tried to scream but no sound came out.

Leah blacked out.

That Halloween night all the teenagers except Leah were found unconscious in the forest by another group of teenagers who had gone to run the devil’s ditch for a dare. Marcus was found dead impaled on a tree. Everyone else had minor injuries.

Leah was found a week later in a field close to her home, in a coma.

Experts couldn’t figure out what happened that night in the forest, they came to the conclusion it was a phenomenon that could have come from a possible build-up of natural underground gasses.

The children had no memory of what happened. Only Leah did, and she never told anyone.

………

FIVE YEARS LATER

It was the day of Leah’s eighteenth birthday, her blue eyes sparkled as she stood on the edge of devil’s ditch and smiled running her fingers through her long glossy brown hair. “I hope you're not going to make me do the run.” She smiled slipping her jacket off and dropped it on the floor. “Maybe I need to show you what you're going to be missing if you don’t keep your word and come for me,” She giggled as she slowly unbuttoned her blouse exposing her bare breast to the cold evening air. Tweaking her rock-hard nipples and massaging her breast Leah quietly moaned imagining it was his hands. “I’ve kept myself for you.” She whispered stroking her hand down her waist and slowly eased it into her jeans. “I can’t wait any longer, I’m gonna have to break my promise.”

Leah’s stomach tightened when she heard a deep growl behind her. A large arm wrapped around her waist from behind, she relaxed against the heat of the body behind her and smiled.

“Take me,” She whispered as everything went dark around her.
