my eyes are glued to the backseat
i am in the middle
her mother is in the front
they scooch closer together
very slowly
almost an inch every minute
until they are touching
they do not know i am watching them
and if they do, they do not say
she takes a peek up to the front seat
where her mothers eyes are drooping
barely open, but focused on the road
she turns toward him
he pulls the flimsy pink blanket over him
and she takes him in her hand
moving it slowly, rhythmically up and down
his eyes are closed and he grips the sides of the seats
his knuckles are white
she looks forward and i pretend to be asleep
she does not know i am watching
and if she does, she does not say
she removes her hand and his own takes its place
while her head slides under the blanket and begins bobbing up and down
right on top of his lap
his eyes are open and they glance towards me
i quickly close my eyes
he does not know i am watching him
and if he does, he does not say
they are finished now
and are cuddling close together
this is rather bold of her
i guess she knows shes already in trouble
for bringing an older boy in the car
so she pushes her luck
i glance toward the front seat
where her mother finally tears her eyes from the road
and looks toward the back seat
they pretend they have been sleeping the whole time
i know they haven't
she does not know what has just happened
and if she does, she does not say
