The next two days kept me occupied. I had to change over my tickets, exchange money, and work out my whole journey. I had to fit in 2 months’ worth into 2 days, it was hard. Dave helped me a lot, I couldn’t be more grateful. The night before I was due to leave, Dave asked me to go for a drink with him. It would be a few months till I saw him again, so I agreed.

We went to the local bar, at the end of our road. I prayed John wouldn’t see us pass his house, and thankfully he didn’t. I knew John hardly ever went out drinking, so I didn’t expect to see him in the pub. As soon as he walked through the doors, I knew Dave was to blame. His reaction said it all. I stared at him and frowned.

“I’m sorry. I just think you two should talk before you leave. He needs to know you’re going”

“I told you to tell him”

I said angrily. Before he had a chance to respond, John was standing over us.

“Hi”

He uttered. Dave pushed out a chair for him, and he sat down. I couldn’t even look at him, and Dave was definitely in my bad books. I stood up; Dave looked at me with a silent request. Don’t leave yet please.

“I’m going the bathroom”

I barked at him. He gave me an apologetic smile, but I just turned and went into the toilet. I wanted to just run. I even checked how large the window in the bathroom was. But I decided I should just front it out. I would be gone tomorrow. And tonight would just become a distant memory. I took a deep breath and went back out.

Dave was not at the table. I looked at the bar, but he wasn’t there either. I hoped for his sake, he was just in the toilet. I walked over and took my seat.

“Where’s Dave?”

I asked, without even looking at him.

“He said to tell you he had to go to work. He also said you had something you had to tell me”

I was fuming. How could Dave do this to me? He knew how I felt about John at the moment. I did not need this right now.

“Just tell me what it is. I can tell you have something on your mind”

I looked at him for the first time, and forced a smiled.

“Actually it’s the complete opposite. I have nothing on my mind. And for the next few months, I am going to be enjoying sun, sea and sex”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m going travelling. I leave in the morning. 4 months of holiday’s worth”

Again I smiled, partly because I was looking forward to my trip. But also, because of the look on John’s face.

“I thought you weren’t leaving till August, so you could spend Christmas with your mum and dad?”

“Well I had a change of plans”

I narrowed my eyes at him. Making it clear who had caused them changes. He lowered his head, and a flash of guilt washed through me. Only for a second though, as what he had done, echoed through my mind. I stood up.

“I have to go”

I uttered, making my way to the door. Only when I got outside, did I take a breath of air. I was still angry with Dave. And I would make sure he knew just how angry, when I saw him. His van was not in the drive, so I assumed he had gone somewhere to hide. I started walking toward my house, when I heard footsteps running up behind me.

I turned quickly, expecting to be mugged or something. But instead, I saw John coming toward me. Turning back around, I kept on walking.

“Anna, please wait”

He shouted. I ignored him and kept up my steady pace. He grabbed my arm, and turned me to face him. I pulled back.

“Let go of me”

I yelled, drawing the attention of a passer-by.

“Are you ok love?”

He shouted over to me, eyeing John. I thought about saying no. But no matter what he had done to me, I didn’t want to cause him any trouble.

“I’m fine thank you, we were just messing around”

He frowned like he didn’t believe me, but went on his way. I once again started walking away from John. But he followed close behind me.

“We need to talk Anna, please”

I reached my front door, and put in my key. He reached my side before I could actually open the lock.

“Annabelle, please. Just give me five minutes”

I turned and looked at him. Then I thought why not. It might be good to clear the air before I left. That way it might be easier to move on. I pushed open the door, and went inside. I left the door open behind me, allowing him to follow me inside. I hung up my coat, and bag, and then went to put the kettle on.

He sat at the kitchen table, while I made us both a coffee. When I sat down opposite him, I said.

“Ok that’s 2 minutes you have had, you now have 3”

He let out a large sigh.

“Well, what do you want John?”

I asked impatiently.

“Just to explain”

He said quietly. Then he looked up at me. His big blue eyes, took my breath away.

“Anna, I never meant to hurt you”

“Yeah well, it’s done now, so no point going over it”

“Well I think there is a point. You didn’t give me the opportunity to explain what happened”

“I already know what happened. You fucked my friend, then lied to me, so you could get me into bed”

“No that’s not how it was”

He protested. I shrugged, like I really didn’t care. The truth was I was dying inside. I loved this man, and he had said he loved me. I thought we might have had something special. He had broken my heart.

“Will you please just let me tell you, from my point of view, what happened? Without interrupting me”

I leaned back, and crossed my arms.

“Go ahead, this should be interesting”

I joked. He again huffed, and then started talking.

“When I went out with Julia, I got completely trashed”

“So you’re going to use the beer goggles excuse, really?”

“You said you wouldn’t interrupt”

I waved my hand at him, indicating for him to continue.

“I was so mad with you. I had told you I liked you a lot, but you didn’t reply. Then you went cold on me, telling me to go out with her”

I opened my mouth ready to protest. But he reached across, and placed his finger against my lips.

“Please, just hear me out”

My heart rate sped up at his touch. I moved my head aside, to get his finger off me. Then I just nodded, and decided to just let him finish. The sooner this was over the better.

“I am in no way blaming you. I’m just trying to explain where my head was. I thought I had no chance with you. I have loved you forever, and I thought I had lost you. And not just romantically, but also as a friend”

He lowered his head. And that niggling guilt, on my part, started creeping to the surface again. I ignored it and continued listening.

“The day I woke up in Julia’s bed, I was so angry with myself. I knew I had just used her, and I felt so bad. I needed anything to get you off my mind. But I went about it all the wrong way. I explained everything to Julia, and she completely understood, thankfully. She said she knew my mind had been else ware all night. Then when you came to my house, and you knew I had slept with her, I panicked. I did not want to lose you again. So I lied. I am not proud of my behaviour. And if I could change it I would. But I promise you, I will never lie to you again. I was stupid, and I hate myself probably more than you hate me”

“I don’t hate you”

I blurted out, damn filter failing me again. He smiled a small smile. And behind that smile was hope. I had to get him out of here, before I felt it too. I couldn’t let him in again, I just couldn’t. He reached for my hand.

“Anna, I love you. What happened with Julia was before I knew how you felt. And it was before we had even gotten together. If I had any inkling you had any feelings for me, there is no way I would have went there. I would never cheat on you”

I pulled my hand away, and stood up.

“No you will just lie to my face”

He stood up, and walked around the table, pulling me against him.

“Anna please, I need you, I love you”

I felt tears escape my eyes, betraying my need to stay emotionless.

“John please don’t do this”

“I can’t lose you Annabelle, please say you forgive me”

I looked at his desperate face, and my insides melted. I couldn’t speak, so I just nodded. Then his lips were on mine, burning through my defences. I wrapped my arms around his neck, and welcomed his mouth. God I had missed him.

I tore at his shirt, ripping the buttons open. I needed to feel him under my fingers. I caressed his chest, feeling the low rumbles through my palms as he moaned. I wanted him so badly. I pulled up the skirt I was wearing, and then fumbled with his zipper. I pulled his rock hard cock free. I pushed him back, till he leaned against the unit.

Using his shoulders for leverage, I pulled my body up him. With my hand still around him, I guided his penis inside me. We both gasped, as I sunk down further onto him. I fucked him hard, my need for release overpowering. He matched my thrusts with his own. Within a few moments, we were both climaxing, crying out with pleasure.

We both sunk to the floor, exhausted. He gathered me in his arms.

“Jesus Anna, that was amazing”

He whispered. I couldn’t help smiling. It truly had been.

“No better way to say goodbye”

I replied. He looked at me.

“You’re still going?”

He asked surprise evident in his voice.

“Of course I am. It’s all planned, paid for. I can’t change my tickets now it’s too late”

He looked hurt.

“What about us?”

I didn’t know what to say. I had not planned for any of this to happen.

“Maybe it’s for the best. We could get some distance, try and figure out exactly what we mean to each other”

“I don’t need distance to know I love you”

“John, please don’t make this harder than it already is”

He stood up, fixing his clothes.

“You know what; I’ll make this very easy on you. Have a good trip Anna”

He said, and then he turned and left, slamming the front door behind him. I got up and pulled down my skirt. I took a seat at the table and cried. Of course I didn’t want to go. I would happily change my plans again, if I could. I thought it would have been easier on him, to act like it was nothing. To make out like I wanted to go, when really, once again, I was dying inside.

I wasn’t lying when I said it was too late. I could only change my tickets once, and I had already done that. I had also already told my parents I would be there early. They were excited about seeing me. I couldn’t cancel now. I decided to go to bed. I knew I wouldn’t sleep tonight, but I had to at least get some rest. I had a long trek ahead of me.

When I went down stairs early the next morning, Dave was already up. He had cooked me a farewell breakfast. Which also doubled as an apology, I assumed. I shook my head at him.

“I’m sorry ok, but I genuinely did get a call from work”

“Likely story”

I muttered. He walked over to me and pulled me into a hug.

“I am going to miss your ugly mug so much”

He laughed. I held him tight.

“Not as much as I’m going to miss you”

I cried.

“Hay, hay. No tears kid. It’s not like you’re going to be gone forever. The time will fly by”

“I will call you every day”

He laughed again, grabbing my face between his hands.

“No you won’t, you will be having too much fun”

He planted a kiss on my forehead, and then hugged me again. We sat and ate breakfast. Then he helped me with my bags. I hadn’t packed too much. I only had a backpack, and one suitcase. It was better to travel light. I checked I had my tickets. And then I called for a taxi.

When we went outside, and placed the bags in the boot of the car. I couldn’t help glancing toward John’s. Stupidly I thought he would have come to say goodbye. But part of me was glad he never. Dave hugged me again.

“You be careful out there baby sister, and don’t be a stranger”

“I promise I will call you often”

I smiled. I had promised no more tears. So I fought them back when they threatened to fall.

“Would you do me a favour please Dave?”

“Anything”

“Help him move on. It’ll be easier for him with me gone”

He just nodded and gave me a sad smile.

“I’ll try”

He said, giving me another hug. Somehow I managed to keep the tears in, till the taxi pulled away. But as I passed John’s house, I saw him on his doorstep. He blew me a kiss, which caused the tears to topple over my eyelids.

The months passed, as I travelled from country to country. I saw the pyramids in Egypt. The beautiful beaches in Thailand. The Great Barrier Reef. The wonders of the Maldives. I climbed the Eiffel tower. Saw the leaning tower of Pisa. It was all so wonderful. Yet no matter how far away I got, I couldn’t shake my feelings for John.

I called Dave almost every day, with tales from my travels. I kept my Facebook page updated with pictures, so he could see where I had been. But neither of us mentioned John. And no matter how much I wanted to know about him. It was somehow easier not knowing. It would make me miss him even more.

I was in New Zealand, which was my final destination before I was going to Australia. I called Dave to let him know I would be at mum and dads in 2 days. And for the first time in the 4 months I had been away, he mentioned John.

“Anna, can I ask you something?”

“Sure”

I said, not expecting his question.

“Do you still love John?”

My heart froze.

“Why do you ask me that?”

I said. The emotion was evident in my voice.

“It’s just a question. I just wondered because you never mention him”

“I expect you to keep this to yourself Dave”

“Absolutely, you know you can trust me”

“Of course I still love him. I never stopped. I don’t think I ever will”

I openly cried.

“I’m sorry kid. I didn’t mean to upset you. I won’t mention it again”

He swiftly changed the subject to mum and dad. Knowing I was so excited to see them. Soon my tears had dried, and we were chatting happily. But the moment I hung up, my heart broke again. What would I do if I got home, and he was involved with someone? I don’t know if I could handle that. I tried to get some sleep. But I was too excited, and hurt to even close my eyes.

The plane journey, 24 hours later, was the most tiring of all of the others I had taken. I didn’t know if it was because it was the end of my journey, or because I was emotionally raw. When I walked through the arrival gate, I saw my parents. My mum ran to me, and grabbed tight hold of me.

“Oh sweetheart, I have missed you so much”

“It’s great to see you mum”

Next my dad accosted me. He just held me tight, no words were needed. He collected my bags for me, as mum took me out to the car. The heat was stifling, I was glad I had changed into shorts and t shirt. They didn’t live far from the airport.

The house was so familiar to me, after seeing hundreds of pictures. But I had never actually been here. It was beautiful. It was a large sand stone building, right by the beach. With huge windows, that stood from floor to ceiling along the back wall. The view was spectacular. We spent the first few hours, eating, drinking and looking through my many photos.

My mum said she was jealous. She had always wanted to travel. I yawned as we spoke.

“You look exhausted honey, why don’t you go and get some sleep. We’re taking you out this evening to a posh restaurant”

“Oh mum you really don’t have to. Dinner at home will be fine”

“It’s already booked, so I don’t want to hear any more about it. Now you go and get some rest”

She kissed my cheek, and sent me to my room. The moment my head hit the pillow, I was out like a light. My mum woke me up a few hours later. I felt so much better.

“Go and get a shower honey. I have laid some dresses out for you to choose from”

I did as she said. I knew it was pointless arguing with my mother. Everybody who knew her knew that about her. When she made plans, no one would change them. I felt even better after a hot shower. After so many communal showers, in hostels, with lukewarm water, this was a godsend. All the dresses she had put on her bed, were beautiful. All chiffon and silk.

I chose one that was knee length. It was red silk, and had straps on the shoulders. Simple yet elegant, just like my mum, I thought. I left my wavy blonde hair down. It had grown so much over the past few months. It was now almost to my waist. I slipped on a pair of red heels, and then headed out to the living room.

My mum looked me over. And tears filled her eyes.

“Oh baby you look so beautiful”

“Ok mum no need for dramatics”

She hugged me tight, and I heard he sniff back the tears,

“What's wrong?”

I asked, worried.

“Nothing is wrong sweetheart, I’m just very happy”

“Alright Andrea, that’s enough. Leave the poor girl alone”

My dad interrupted her emotional outburst. She finally let go of me, giving me a kiss on the cheek. She beamed at me, and then grabbed her wrap.

“Are you ready to go?”

Dad asked. We both nodded, and followed him out to the car. All the way to the restaurant, my mum kept a tight grip on my hand. Every now and again she smiled up at me. She seemed excited about something. I had a feeling in my stomach that something was going on.

When we got in the restaurant, we were shown to a table for 5. I wondered why we had this table, when there were so many with just 3 seats. My dad ordered a bottle of Champaign.

“Don’t waste your money dad, a beer will be fine”

“Well it is a celebration”

My mum blurted out. I saw my dad give her a look that said, shut up Andrea. Now I knew something was off.

“What is going on here?”

I asked, starting to feel nervous.

“Just a little surprise”

I heard a familiar voice say behind me. I turned to see Dave standing there smiling. I leapt up and hugged him.

“What are you doing here? Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”

I asked. I was so happy to see him.

“I wanted to surprise you kid. God I’ve missed you”

“Me too”

I wept against his shoulder. He pulled away from me, holding me at arms-length.

“I have another surprise, if you want it?”

He asked smiling. I just nodded. He pointed behind me. When I turned, I came face to face with John. His beautiful smile spread from ear to ear. I couldn’t help myself, and I flew into his open arms.

“I’ve missed you more than I can say”

He whispered in my ear. I turned and looked at mum and dad.

“You two knew about this didn’t you?”

I asked, smiling. My mum was dabbing a tear away from her eye. I turned back to John.

“Why didn’t Dave tell me you were coming?”

“I asked him not to. And I asked your mum and dad to keep it quiet. I also asked your mum and dad something else”

He smiled. I frowned.

“What did you ask them?”

I enquired, curiosity taking hold. He took my hands in his.

“I asked them if I could do this”

He dropped to one knee, pulling out a box, which contained a ring. I almost fainted.

“Annabelle Jane Watkins, I love you, more than I ever thought it was possible to love anybody. I never want to be without you. Please say you will be my wife”

I stared at him, mouth wide open. Was this actually happening? Did John just propose? I glanced around at everybody. My mum was again wiping away tears. My dad had a grip on her hand, and was smiling at me. Dave was also smiling. Then I looked back at John, who looked apprehensive. I glanced down at the ring. It was a beautiful solitaire diamond ring. White gold and just what I would have chosen myself.

“Well?”

He asked, sounding worried now. I smiled at him.

“Of course I will”

I said. The cheers erupted around us, as John placed the ring on my finger. Then he stood up and pulled me to him. Our lips met and I was in heaven. If all these people hadn’t have been here. I would have ravaged him there and then.

“I love you Annabelle”

“I love you too”

I smiled, before going in for another kiss. Over the next few months, the wedding plans were made. We would travel back to Australia, and have the ceremony on the beach. It was a wonderful day. My dad gave me away. Mel was my maid of honour. And Dave was John’s best man. Everything was perfect. I wore my mums wedding dress. It was satin, with beading all down the back. It had a halter neck, and a long train.

After the ceremony, we had the reception in mum and dads house. The whole day went without a hitch. And at the end of the night, I was whisked away by my husband to a hotel. We had not slept together since the engagement. Something we both agreed on, and regretted in equal measures. But tonight there was no stopping us.

The moment we were in the elevator, on the way up to our room, we were all over each other. When the doors opened, he picked me up and carried me to our room. After he opened the door, he carried me across the threshold. We were naked and fucking hard within seconds. As we lay in each other’s arms, in the afterglow of our love making, John held me close.

“I love you Mrs Walsh”

He said, kissing my head.

“Not as much as I love you Mr Walsh”

I replied, holding him closer, and in my husband’s arms I drifted off into a dreamless sleep.
