Chapter Content - ver.1

Submitted: November 25, 2015

It was only a week till Christmas. I hadn’t even begun my shopping yet. And I was overdue on my rent. I was way too busy with this job I had gotten some months earlier. It kept me busy from 9am, straight through till 7pm. I was cleaning, shopping or entertaining guests.

Each night I got home just in time to put Jade to bed. Jade was my daughter, she is 5 years old, and a cheeky little madam. She was so excited about Christmas. If I didn’t have her, I probably wouldn’t have bothered myself.

I had never had a love for Christmas myself. Christmas, for me, was always a lonely time. I had been in a children’s home from the age of 2. My mum hadn’t been able to cope with me, so she given me up.

I never liked Christmas in the home, I didn’t fit in with the other kids, and we only ever received one present. We were given this by a rather dishevelled Santa, who was always played by the social worker, who we knew well. It kind of ruined the magic every kid should feel.

When I discovered I was having Jade, after a one night stand, I had promised myself I would be a better mum than mine had been, hence, why I had this job. It was amazing money, and although I was always on the move, I was basically my own boss.

The man I worked for was barely at home. I had only met him officially once, in the 7 months I had worked for him. I did receive a list of jobs each morning. Either by text, e mail, or phone calls from his P.A. His huge house was used for parties often. So it always had to be spotless.

The time I had met Mr Lambert, he barely noticed I was in the room. His P.A. Grace, had introduced me, and he shook my hand, without looking up from his phone. But god, he was stunning.

Have you ever looked at a man, and instantly you can imagine what he must look like naked? He was tall, broad, tanned and obviously stylish. The suit he wore clearly cost more than I could ever make in a year. He was like a model from the catwalk.

He was super super hot, but he knew it. He was always in the papers, and on television. He never had the same girl with him. But he certainly had a type. Tall, leggy blondes, with supermodel like bodies and faces. They were a million miles away from me.

I’m not saying I’m a munter. I have quite a pretty face. But I had a mum body, I had never, nor would I ever, fit into a size zero. I was curvy, rather than fat, but I still had to squeeze into my jeans.

So I had the hot’s for my sexy boss, who I never saw, and I was basically his housekeeper, but as I said, not a bad job. I was getting paid today, so I had told Hannah, my baby sitter and best friend, I would be home late.

She was putting Jade to bed for me, so she wouldn’t see her presents when I got home. It was 5pm when Grace and Mr Lambert arrived at the house. As usual, he just went straight into his office, and closed the door.

“Hi Fay, how are you?”

She smiled.

“I’m great thanks, how are you?”

“Well, I’m kind of pissed off if I’m honest. And I am afraid I have some bad news. I don’t have your money, and I’m afraid I won’t have it till December 30th”

No, this can’t be happening.

“What, why”

“Mr Lambert’s business account was hacked. The bank have frozen all payments, mine included. I’m afraid he is going out of town for the holidays, and he won’t be back till the 29th, but he will fix the issue then. It will still include your Christmas bonus”

She was saying it like it was completely fine.

“That’s bullshit; it doesn’t help me now does it?”

I yelled. She tried to shush me, but I was so mad. This asshole was not going to ruin my daughters Christmas.

“No, I will not shush, he can’t do this”

His office door opened, and he stepped out, looking sexy yet angry.

“What the hell is going on out here?”

He snapped.

“It’s ok Mr Lambert, I am sorting it”

Grace tried to calm him. I stepped forward.

“No it is damn well not ok. You cannot just leave us without money. It’s fucking Christmas. I will not tell my daughter that Santa couldn’t come this year, because my boss is an asshole”

I knew I was crossing the line, and I would probably lose my job, but he deserved it. Screw him. He and Grace stared at me, with their mouths hung open. I had started, so I might as well finish, I mused.

“I have responsibilities Mr Lambert, just like everybody else. I work my ass off for you, every fucking day. It is 7 days till Christmas, and I have nothing in yet”

“Maybe the sensible thing to do, would have been to start shopping earlier in the year”

I honestly wanted to slap his handsome face. I stepped forward, but Grace placed a hand on my arm.

“Honey, you’re not the only one who is being left high and dry”

I was enraged. It was ok for her to say, in her Armani suit. She probably had millions in the bank. Why would she give a fuck about us lowly workers?

“Fuck you and fuck your job, Merry fucking Christmas”

I yelled, as I stormed out the house. I actually hated them, both of them. I got home at 7pm. Hannah frowned when she saw me.

“What are you doing home early; I thought you were going to see Santa?”

That is what we had told Jade, so she would go to bed for Hannah.

“Santa was busy”

I smiled, as Jade came running into the hall, with her chubby arms outstretched to me. I picked her up, kissing her rosy cheeks.

“Hello pudding”

“Hello Mummy, did Santa say I was good?”

“Mummy will have to go and see Santa tomorrow; he was very busy making all the toys”

“The elves make the toys silly”

She laughed. I kissed her again, and placed her back on her feet. She ran back into the living room.

“What happened?”

Hannah asked me.

“The bastard didn’t pay me”

“What, he can’t do that”

“That’s what I said, well, that and some other things. So not only have I got no money for Christmas, I have just quit my job”

Hannah hugged me.

“You know I will help you as much as I can. We can go shopping tomorrow while Jade is in school”

“Oh Hannah, I can’t take your money”

“Don’t be ridiculous. I will not take no for an answer. My Goddaughter will have a wonderful Christmas, and so will we”

She pulled on her coat and hugged me again.

“I’ll pick you up in the morning. Bye beautiful”

She yelled into Jade.

“Bye Aunty Han”

She yelled back. She was about to leave when she suddenly remembered something.

“I forgot to say, and I’m sorry to make your day worse, but Mr Samson was here earlier. He was fuming; he wants you to call him”

I sighed.

“So I’m probably going to be homeless too”

She stroked my arm.

“Try not to worry honey”

She smiled, before leaving. Easy for her to say, I thought. I loved Hannah, she had been my best friend since high school, but her sunny disposition irritated me sometimes.

I got Jade ready for bed, and tucked her in. I noticed she looked rather sad. I sat down next to her.

“What’s the matter honey?”

“Did Santa not want to see you because I was bad?”

She asked. I pulled her into my lap.

“Absolutely not. In fact, when he rang me to tell me he was busy, he said he was very proud of you. You have been eating all your vegetables, and tidying up your toys for Aunty Hannah every night. He said you have been a wonderful little girl all year”

“But I put my carrots in the plant”

I had to stop myself laughing. I leaned in and whispered.

“We will keep that between just us, ok”

I gave her a wink, and she started giggling. I could see the excitement back in her eyes, and I was so afraid I would let her down. I tucked her back in, and went to sit down for the first time in 12 and a half hours. My bum had just hit the cushion, when my doorbell rang.

I let out a huff, and went to answer it. As soon as I opened the door, Mr Samson stormed in.

“I asked your friend to tell you to call me”

“I have literally only just sat down Mr Samson, I was going to call”

“Yeah, sure you were”

He sniped. He held his hand out.

He said.

“Mr Samson I…”

“Do you have my rent or not?”

“No, but I…”

“I don’t want to hear any more excuses Miss Andrew, if you don’t have my rent; I want you out by tomorrow”

“What, no please Mr Samson I promise…”

“I have been listening to your promises for the past 3 weeks. You have till 5pm tomorrow. That is the end of the matter”

“But it is Christmas”

I said, thinking that might touch his human side.

“I don’t give a damn; I am not a charity Fay”

With those last words, he left, slamming the door behind him. I broke down. What was I going to do? I had nobody I could ask for help. Hannah would do all she could for us, I knew that. But she barely had room to swing a cat in her flat; we could not even stay with her.

This was all his fault, fucking Mr Lambert. My wages and Christmas bonus would have covered the rent I owed, and gotten us all we needed for Christmas. That prick had literally ruined my life.

I sat up most of the night, and tried to come up with a plan. By the time the sun was shining through the window, I knew it was useless. We would actually be homeless for Christmas.

Hannah arrived just after I had dropped Jade off at nursery. I filled her in.

“Oh shit, what a complete bastard. I know my place is small but you are welcome to stay with me”

“Thank you honey, I appreciate that. But you know there would not be room for even one more bed. I have no other option; I have to go to social services”

Hannah’s face fell. She knew how tough that would be for me. Once I had left the home, I swore never to have any further involvement with social services. I guess I stupidly blamed them for never getting adopted. But I was stuck, and I would not live on the streets with Jade.

Hannah hugged me.

“I will come with you”

“Thanks Han”

We waited hours in the social office. Eventually they found a mother and baby hostel we could move into. We would be in one cramped room, and we had to share a bathroom with everybody else. It sounded just like the home I had lived in.

I had done it; I had become the mum I swore I never would be. I had let my baby girl down. I felt utter shame, but also total rage. That asshole Lambert, sitting up there in his mansion, counting his millions. I had to tell him what I actually thought of him.

When we got into the car, I turned to Hannah.

“Could you take me to Lambert Hall?”

“Why would you want to go there?”

“Because I have to tell him exactly what he has done. Not that he will care one iota, but it will make me feel better. Not like he can fire me, I already quit”

“Ok then”

She grinned, and drove me to his house. I jumped out and climbed the stairs to the front door. I banged hard on the wood. When there was no answer, I banged again. Geoff opened up finally.

“Fay, I don’t think you should be here. I heard what happened; he is not in a great mood”

“Sorry Geoff, I don’t honestly care right now, I have to speak to him”

I shoved my way in, and stormed into his office.

“Have you got any idea what you have done? Not that I expect you to give a shit. Somebody like you cares only about themselves. But I had to tell you what your actions have caused. I and my 5 year old daughter are going to be spending Christmas in a homeless hostel”

Tears streamed down my face, mostly angry tears, but there were a few self-pity ones too.

“I have to borrow money off my friend to get her a few gifts, so she doesn’t think Santa hates her. All because you couldn’t be fucking bothered sorting out the payments for your staff. I’m surprised you have any workers left. You are a complete bastard. I fucking hate you

I screamed the last part, and was completely shocked when he stood up, and hugged me. I shoved him away.

“Don’t you dare touch me”

I yelled. But he hugged me again. I kept shoving at his chest, till I had no more strength to fight him off. He held me as I cried. Once I had gathered myself, I stepped away.

“I hate you”

I whispered.

“Miss Andrew, I honestly don’t know what to say. I had no idea any of this would happen. When you left last night, I felt dreadful. I behaved appallingly, I apologize”

I was in utter shock. But apologies wouldn’t save me now. I let out a huff, and turned to leave.

“Why don’t you stay here?”

He suddenly said. I spun around and frowned at him.

“I said, why don’t you, and your daughter of course, stay here over the holidays. I have to go away, so you would have the place to yourselves”

I couldn’t speak. Had he just honestly said that?

“I…I don’t know”

He stepped forward and took my hand.

“Look, I know I’m not a very approachable person, I’m a business man, and I keep everything in my life professional. But despite what you might think, I am not a monster. Nobody should be homeless at Christmas time. And as it is my fault you are in this predicament, it is only fair I make up for it”

“I have no money to hire…”

“Miss Andrew, it’s an offer to stay here over the holidays, as my guests. Only I won’t be here”

He smiled and my womb contracted. I had actually never seen him smile. He had the biggest dimples I had ever seen.

“The freezer is stocked, the decorations are up and it would be a total waste if you didn’t take me up on my offer”

Could I really do this? I thought about Jade, and imagined her face if I bought her here. She would be in utter heaven. Fuck it, why shouldn’t I do this?

I said, still unsure if all this was real.

“Wonderful. Geoff will be here till 8pm, I will leave keys with him for you. Feel free to come and go as you please. This is your home over the holidays”

He had become all business like again. I had to say, I preferred the nice, smiling, Mr Lambert.

“Thank you”

I muttered, but I don’t know if he even heard, he was back typing on his computer. I walked out in a daze. When I got in the car, Hannah seemed relieved.

“I thought you had hit the prick or something, you were in there so long. I was expecting the police to pull up. I had the engine revved for a quick getaway”

I laughed.

“Well, what happened?”

“He…he was nice. He said sorry, and invited us to stay here over Christmas”

I replied, still not quite believing what I was saying.

“You are shitting me”

“No, he said we can treat this place as home. Even eat the food in the freezer”

“Wow, do you think if I went in there and yelled at him, he would let me stay too?”

We both started laughing.

“You deserve this honey. Jade is going to flip out, the size of the trees out here; I imagine it is like a grotto inside”

“It is beautiful. You can see for yourself later, and on Christmas day remember”

She jumped about in her seat. Hannah always spent Christmas with us. She was family to Jade and me. I couldn’t wait to pick Jade up now. Hannah and I went shopping, and got a few little gifts for Jade. It wasn’t much, but she would be happy with just one, she was not a greedy child.

We ended up back at my house, packing mine and Jades belongings. Most of the big furniture belonged in the flat, so we only had a few suit cases and boxes. I picked Jade up, and told her I had a surprise for her.

When we pulled up outside the house, her face lit up.

“Wow, is this where the queen lives mummy?”

She asked.

“No honey, it’s where we live, over Christmas at least”

“I love it”

She screamed, jumping out of the car, and running up the stairs. She knocked on the door, her little arms barely reaching the knocker. Geoff answered and she smiled up at him.

“I live here”

She announced. Geoff gave her a huge smile, and let her run inside. Hannah and I got our stuff, and followed her in.

“Here are the keys Fay, his lordship said to tell you to help yourself to anything. I wonder what has come over him, being so charitable”

He laughed. At that moment, all the shine of this little adventure disappeared. He thought of us as a charity case, everybody must see us that way. I felt the shame take over me again.

“Thank you Geoff”

I managed to smile, despite how I was feeling. Hannah stayed for a while, before heading home. I made Jade supper, and we went searching for the bedrooms. I had never been upstairs before. It was just as huge as downstairs. At least 10 doors, led off a vast hallway.

Jade started running to each room, pushing open the doors. She reached one which was locked. She turned the key, and I saw the excitement in her eyes.

“I want this room mummy”

She screamed. I walked over to her, and looked inside. The room was made up for a little girl. Everything was pink and fluffy. The bed was massive, and it had a princess canopy over it. There were toys everywhere. It was stunningly beautiful. Just what I would have done for Jade, had I had the money.

We both walked in, and she picked up a doll.

“Look at her mummy, she is pretty, can I have her?”

“What the hell are you doing?”

Somebody yelled from the doorway. Jade and I turned around. Mr Lambert stood there looking furious.

“Mr Lambert, I’m sorry, I…”

“When a door is locked, it doesn’t often mean just walk in does it?”

Jade moved closer to me, still clutching the doll. He walked in and snatched the doll out of Jades hands.

“Give me that”

He snapped. I grabbed Jade’s hand, and walked out of the room.

“Go back downstairs honey; I’ll be there in a moment”

Once she was out of sight, I walked back in the room, closing the door over behind me.

“Who the hell do you think you are, talking to my daughter that way? This might be your house Mr Lambert, but you invited us to stay. Maybe it would have been useful for me to know certain rooms were out of bounds. Don’t you ever, talk to my little girl that way again. Now, are there any more rooms we should avoid?”

He shook his head. I walked out without another word spoken. I found another room, and called Jade up to get her to bed. Once she was tucked in, and half asleep, I went back down stairs. Mr Lambert was in the living room.

I turned to walk back out, but he stood up and started talking.

“Miss Andrew, I believe I owe you yet another apology. I should have told you about the room, I’m sorry for scaring your daughter”

I turned to face him.

“I should apologise myself. When I realised the door was locked, I should have stopped Jade from going in there. It is a beautiful room”

I saw sadness cross his features. I wanted to ask whose room it was, but I didn’t want to pry.

“If you would join me, I can explain my reaction”

I sat in the offered chair, and he sat back on the couch.

“Not many people know what I am about to tell you, and I would appreciate if it stayed that way”

“You can trust me”

“When I was in college, 15 years ago, I got married. We were both very young, but we loved each other. She got pregnant, and we had a daughter. We struggled for a while. But we were happy. When I made my first deal, we finally had some money. I bought this house as a surprise, and did the room up for Becka. They never saw the house in the end”

He went very stiff suddenly. He looked at me, and I saw fear in his eyes. It seemed he hadn’t meant to say so much.

“I trust you will keep this between us”

“Of course”

I assured him. I wouldn’t tell a soul. I wondered why they hadn’t seen the house. Had she left him, taken their daughter away? I doubted I would get the answers right now. I thought a change of subject would help.

“Are you not going away now?”

I eventually asked. He snapped out of his thoughts.

“God, I can’t believe I didn’t even explain why I am here. The snow caused the airlines to ground all flights. So I am afraid you may have to put up with me over the holidays”

Oh my god, he would be here over Christmas. This would be so awkward.

“There will still be a room at the hostel we can take, I’ll contact them tomorrow”

“No, that will not be necessary. I can stay in a hotel, if I being here will make you feel uncomfortable”

“Absolutely not, this is your home; if anybody leaves it should be us”

I stood and walked toward the door.

“Miss Andrew, please, I am fine with you staying. If you have no reservations about sharing a house with me, I am fine with staying too”

He smiled again, making me tingle.

“I would be fine with that”

I smiled back.

“Goodnight Mr Lambert”

“Please call me David. Goodnight Miss Andrew”

“It’s Fay”

I said, as I left the room. I was woken in the night by screaming. I jumped out of bed, running toward Jades room, once I realised it was her. She was sitting up in bed crying.

“Hay, what’s wrong pumpkin?”

I asked, pulling her onto my lap.

“Santa couldn’t find me mummy. I shouted to tell him I was here, but he couldn’t find me”

“Oh sweetheart, Santa knows exactly where you are. In fact, I guarantee, when you get up in the morning, he would have left your presents under the tree”

“Really mummy, will he?”

“You know he brings most of your gifts early every year. And he brings the special ones on Christmas Eve”

She nodded excitedly.

“So why don’t you go back asleep, and in the morning we will check by the tree, deal?”

We shook pinkie fingers. She climbed back into bed, and I tucked her in.

“Goodnight pudding”

I whispered.

“Night Mummy”

She yawned. I kissed her head, and left the room. I quietly closed the bedroom door over.

“You are really good with her”

Somebody said behind me. I jumped, and spun around quickly. David stood leaning against the wall, just outside Jade’s room.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you. I heard the screams; I just came to see what was wrong”

“It’s ok, it was Just a nightmare”

“Right, ok good”

“I’m sorry you got woke up”

“I wasn’t asleep, I was reading”

“At 3am”

“I don’t often get time to do anything I enjoy. Being stranded here has given me some free time. I intend to monopolize that time”

“Then I should let you get back to your reading”

I headed for the stairs.

“Are you staying up now?”

He asked. I turned back around.

“I promised presents under the tree, Santa has to deliver. So I need to get wrapping”

“Would you like some help?”

“If you want to help, I wouldn’t say no”

He smiled, and followed me downstairs. It quickly became clear, that he had no idea what he was doing.

“Ok, I think I should confess, I have never done this before”

He admitted, after ripping the paper for the third time. I laughed.

“Really, I would never have guessed”

“No honestly I…that was sarcasm wasn’t it”

I tried not to laugh again, but I couldn’t hold it in. When I heard him laughing too, I stopped instantly. This was so strange. The memory of what Geoff had said came flooding back. I was suddenly feeling awkward.

“Are you ok”

He asked me.

“Yes, thank you”

I said in a clipped tone.

“Did I say something to offend you?”

“No, I’m just tired”

I lied. We wrapped the rest of the gifts in silence. After putting them under the tree, we headed back up the stairs. He stopped me before I walked in my room.

“Fay, would you like me to get a few more gifts for Jade?”

That put my defences up.

“No, I would not like that at all. I am not a charity case Mr Lambert. Goodnight”

I went into my room, and slammed the door in his face. I instantly felt bad. Yes, the predicament I was in was his fault, but he had gone above and beyond to help me, even if it was as a charity case.

Jade and I would be in a one room hostel right now, if it wasn’t for him. I opened the door, I had to apologize. I jumped back when I saw him still standing in my doorway.

“God, you frightened me, what are you doing?”

I gasped.

“I’m just standing here trying to decipher what the hell has just happened”

“Mr Lamb…”

“I’ve told you, it is David”

“Sorry David. And I’m sorry for what I have just said. I appreciate all you have done for us”

He suddenly took my hands in his large ones.

“Fay, I don’t see you as a charity case. When I make an error, I am usually the only person who will be aware of it. Either that or everybody is just too scared to point my error out to me. Nobody has ever sought me out to let me know the consequences of my actions. I am responsible for you becoming homeless, simply because I couldn’t be bothered sorting out the bank issue. I owe you a great deal, and I intend to make up for it. Thank you Fay, you have given me my first reality check since…well since my wife used to”

Again, that earlier sadness crossed his features.

“You still love her”

I have no fucking idea where that statement came from. Why did I say that? He dropped my hands like they had burnt him.

“Of course I still love her, I will always love her”

He turned and walked to his room, slamming the door after him. What was my fucking problem? I was such a bitch. I climbed back in bed, and just lay there wide awake. I would have to apologize again, and watch what I said. That is if he didn’t kick us out first thing.

Jade woke me up, after about 10 minutes of sleep.

“Mummy, can I go and see if Santa has been?”

“Of course munchkin, but keep the noise down, we don’t want to wake up Mr Lambert”

“Ok Mummy”

She whispered. She tiptoed across the room, and out the door. But her little feet ran down the stairs, and it echoed everywhere. I couldn’t help laughing. She was so excited, I loved that.

I got up and pulled on my dressing gown. As I left the room, I heard Jade squeal. I quickly ran down the stairs, and shushed her. I didn’t notice David sitting in the chair by the fire.

“It’s ok Mummy, David is already awake”

Jade laughed, while shaking her wrapped gifts.

“His name is Mr Lambert honey, don’t be cheeky”

“It’s alright, I told her to call me David”

I spun around and gasped.

“Should I start carrying a bell with me, to warn you when I am close?”

He laughed. He did keep frightening me.

“I didn’t see you there”

He stood up, and walked closer to me.

“I’m sorry Fay”

“What for, I’m the one who is sorry, I had no right…”

“Forget it, I shouldn’t have reacted the way I did, can we start over. I won’t treat you like a charity case again, I promise”

“You didn’t, that was just a misunderstanding, and I would like to start again”

“Great, who is for pancakes?”

He asked. Jade jumped up and down.

“Me me me”

She yelled. She followed him out to the kitchen, and my heart swelled. She didn’t usually take to men so quickly. Not having her father in her life had made her mistrusting of any male presence. But she really seemed to like David.

I walked out, just as he was lifting her onto the stool.

“I’m making pancakes Mummy”

She smiled. I sat next to her, and David placed a large bowl on the unit in front of her. He measured out all the ingredients, and handed Jade a large wooden spoon.

“Carefully stir all the mixture together”

The spoon was larger than her arm, and she struggled to lift it.

“Can I help you?”

He asked her, and she nodded. He stood behind her, and gripped the spoon over her hand. He stirred the mixture, and Jade smiled the whole time. It was such a sweet sight to behold. Kind of like, watching a father and daughter making breakfast.

I couldn’t help feeling so sorry for him at that moment. He had a daughter somewhere, and he obviously missed her. He still had her room waiting for her. How could someone take a child away from their father? How could he still love that woman?

I suddenly became emotional.

“Excuse me a moment”

I muttered, rushing upstairs. I got in the bathroom, and locked the door. I had no idea what was wrong with me. Tears streamed down my face. I jumped when someone knocked on the door. Quickly wiping my eyes, I opened the lock.

David stood on the other side of the door.

“Where is Jade?”

I asked, worried he had left her sitting on that high stool.

“She’s watching cartoons. Are you alright?”

“Yeah sorry, I always get emotional around this time of year. Thank you for doing that with Jade”

“It did come at a price”

He grinned.

“She wouldn’t let me cook them, unless I promised to take her to see Santa”

“That’s my girl; you get nothing for nothing with us Andrew women”

“What would I have to pay to get a kiss?”

He asked with a charming smile. My whole body stiffened.

“Shit, I just heard that back, I didn’t mean it the way it sounded. I wasn’t insinuating…”

I didn’t let him finish. I pulled him into a kiss. He tasted of toothpaste, and pancake batter. His beautiful lips were so soft, but his kiss was full of passion.

We heard Jade yell from downstairs. I pushed him away.

“Oh my god, I shouldn’t have, I’m so sor…”

He placed his finger against my mouth.

“Do not apologize; I wanted you to kiss me. I have wanted to kiss you since you yelled at me”

He laughed.

Jade yelled again.

“Smoke Mummy”

“Oh fuck”

He yelled, and ran down the stairs as fast as he could. I swiftly followed. I entered the kitchen, just in time to see him putting a charred pancake in the bin.

“Should we get breakfast when we go to see Santa?”

He asked. I started chuckling.

“I can take her, you really don’t have to”

“I would like to, if that is ok”

“Of course it’s ok; I just worried about the press”

“I am allowed to go out with a friend and her daughter”

“I’m just not the type of “friend” you are usually snapped with”

I actually used air quotes, why was I such an idiot around him? He slowly walked over to me, and took my hand.

“What type of friend am I usually with?”

“Gorgeous ones”

I laughed.

“Well then, they won’t notice the difference, will they?”

I felt my cheeks flush. I knew he was just being nice, but I still liked it. He gave me a quick peck on the lips.

“Why don’t you go and get ready, I will watch Jade, and I promise not to try and cook again”

I smiled, and pecked him back. I literally skipped up the stairs. I was smiling the whole time it took me to get ready. Once I was dressed, I shouted Jade to come and get washed. When we were both ready, so was David.

As we walked down the stairs, he bowed.

“My, what beautiful ladies we have here”

Jade’s face lit up.

“Catch me”

She yelled, as she jumped toward him.

We both yelled, but it was too late, she was already flying through the air. He grasped around her waist, as she hugged him tight. I rushed down the rest of the way.

“Don’t you ever do that again young lady, you scared Mummy and David”

“Sorry Mummy, sorry David”

She planted a kiss on his cheek, and I saw his face fall. He placed her back on her feet, and walked out without a word.

“I didn’t mean to scare anybody Mummy”

I picked her up and hugged her tight.

“I know baby, but you can’t just jump down the stairs. If David hadn’t caught you, you could have really hurt yourself”

“Is David not my friend anymore?”

“I’m sure he is, he just got a fright. Come on, let’s get your coat and hat on, so we can go and see Santa”

The ride to the grotto was quiet and tense. It was like he had reverted back to the cold business man, Mr Lambert, instead of David. Jade must have been able to sense the mood change, because she sat quietly in the back seat.

He pulled into the grotto and Jade jumped out, I opened my door.

“Jade stay just there honey”

I said. She leaned against the car door, and crossed her arms. I glanced at David. He hadn’t even taken off his seat belt.

“We won’t be long”

I muttered. As I was about to get out, he touched my arm.

“Is it still ok if I come in with you?”

“Yes, of course it is”

He finally turned to look at me.

“I find certain things hard; please explain to Jade I didn’t mean to upset her”

“Just tell her you’re still her friend, she will be absolutely fine”

We both got out, and Jade stayed by me. David crouched down in front of her.

“I’m sorry I’m such a grumpy Gus Jade, can we still be friends”

She stepped toward him, and placed her plump little fingers against his cheek.

“I’m sorry I scared you David, I just wanted you to catch me”

“That is fine honey, but next time, tell me to catch you, before you jump. I don’t want you getting hurt”

She wrapped her arms around his neck. He sucked in a shallow breath, and then held her tight. He stood up, still hugging her. He looked close to tears, and I had an awful feeling about his daughter. He was in deep pain, which was obvious.

“Ok, shall we go and see Santa”

Jade yelled. We had such a lovely day. After the Santa visit, and the list which went on for about 20 minutes, we all had breakfast. Jade sat on David’s knee at the café, and she fed him pancakes. He ended up covered in syrup.

On the drive back to the house, Jade sung songs he played on the radio. Although, by the time we pulled up the drive, she was snoring lightly. He carried her inside, and up to her bed.

When he joined me back in the living room, I knew I had to ask him about his daughter.

“David, can I ask you something. If you don’t want to answer, just say”

“Go ahead”

“Where is Becka?”

He sat down next to me. But he stayed staring straight ahead.

“Remember I said they didn’t get to see the house, Becka and my wife Tina?”

“On the day we were moving in, we packed up all our stuff and headed for here. It was snowing, and we were playing I spy. Only I didn’t spy the drunk driver on the road. He hit us from the side, and I lost total control. The car hit a verge and turned over. Tina died instantly, her neck broke. Becka lived for 3 days, but her injuries were too severe. I was in coma for 3 months. I didn’t even get to be there with her when she died”

He was openly crying. I gripped his hand. He turned and looked at me.

“I locked that room the day I got out of the hospital, and it hasn’t been opened since. That’s why I reacted the way that I did. Jade is the same age Becka was, and it was just a shock. And today, when she kissed me, it was like a knife to my heart. I will try so hard not to react, but it’s difficult”

“I understand, of course it is”

“I killed my family”

I gripped his shoulders hard.

“No you did not. That bastard drunk killed them. It could have happened if your wife had been driving too”

I kissed his tear stained cheeks.

“You are not to blame, they would not blame you”

“I lost everything, my life, my future, and my heart”

“You are here, you have your life, you have your future and I know you have your heart, I have seen it many times these past few days. You are allowed to go on, because they would want you too. However much you loved them, they loved you just as much. Would Tina ever want to punish you, or for you to punish yourself, for something out of your control”

“She would yell at me, just like you are right now”

I smiled.

“I don’t mean to yell. But I won’t let you blame yourself anymore. I can see it in your face; you are haunted by unneeded guilt. I may not know you well, but I know pain when I see it. Look at me”

I whispered. He raised his eyes.

“You are not to blame, say it”

“Fay I…”

“Say it”

“I…I…I’m not to…blame”

“Say it with a little more conviction”

I ordered.

“I’m not to blame”

“Now yell it”

He shouted. We both started laughing.

“I’ve never told anybody about this. We didn’t have any family, so it was just me afterward. The other driver also died on that day, so I was even denied any justice”

“You have been living alone with this all these years?”

He stroked my cheek.

“Not anymore”

“I’m here if you ever need to talk. Even once we leave. Nobody should go through stuff like that alone”

His hand fell, and so did his face.

I asked. He put on an obviously fake smile, and stood up.

“Nothing, I have just remembered I have to do something important. I will be back later”

He muttered, as he practically ran from the house. What did I say? Jade slept till late afternoon. When she woke up, we ate lunch and watched cartoons. I started cooking dinner around 5pm. We ate again, and then it was time for Jade to go to bed.

“Mummy, is David coming home tonight?”

“I’m not sure sweetheart, but I’m sure he will be back tomorrow”

“Ok, night night Mummy”

“Sweet dreams baby”

I kissed her cheek, and headed back downstairs. David didn’t come home that night, or the night after. I was starting to worry. We may have kissed, but he had his own life, I had no right wondering where he was. But after yesterday, him reliving that memory, I was very concerned.

It was Christmas Eve, when he finally walked through the door. Jade rushed to him, and he picked her up straight away, spinning her around.

“I’ve missed your hugs”

She said.

“Me too sweetheart”

“Are you spending Christmas with us David?”

“If that is ok with you and Mummy”

He smiled, looking at me. I smiled back. Jade had him putting out cookies and milk for Santa, and a carrot for Rudolph. She also made him take her to bed, and read her a story. Once she was settled, he came back down.

He pulled the foot stool over, and sat right in front of me. He grasped my hands.

“I have to thank you”

“For what”

“For making me get off my ass, and finally face my fears and my past. I’m sorry I disappeared, I didn’t have your number to let you know where I was”

“Where were you?”

“Firstly, I went the bank. All payments due to my staff, including extra bonuses, have now been released. I personally called each one to let them know, and apologize. Then I went to our old house. I haven’t been there since…well since that day. I had a lot to sort out. Everything which survived the crash was taken back there. I finally went through it all. It was hard, but I think it has helped. Your right, my girls would never want me to be who I have become. I used to care, I wanted my business to be like a family firm, everybody feeling close, and secure in their jobs. When they died, I lost sight of who I am. You have bought me back from the dead. Thank you Fay”

I was crying.

“I didn’t do anything, except tell you the truth”

“You have made me realise I can love again, without feeling guilty. I love you Fay, and I love Jade. When you said you would be leaving, I knew I had to finally let my past go, so I can have a future with you two”

I was so shocked, but extremely happy. I kissed him.

“I love you too David and Jade adores you. She was so upset when you didn’t come home”

“I’m never leaving again, I promise”

We kissed once more, and he stood up.

“Will you come to bed with me?”

I stood up.

“One condition”

I smiled. I jumped up onto the couch and leapt forward.

“Catch me”

I giggled. He caught me in a tight grip, heartily laughing.

“I will always catch you baby”

He whispered, as he carried me upstairs. He took me into his bedroom. We stood facing each other, once he had put me down. We just stared, both of us gearing up for what was to come. We moved at the same time, tearing at each other’s clothes.

His body was amazing. And he said he loved mine too. He kissed along my neck, and I tossed my head back. I hadn’t been with anybody since Jades father, and he was turning me on so much. He took my nipple in his mouth, and sucked it till it peaked.

I gripped his hair tight; he was too good at that. I moaned loud, and he placed his hand over my mouth.

“Baby, I love Jade, but let’s not wake her right now”

I shoved him onto the bed.

“Then stop teasing me”

I laughed, jumping on top of him. He gripped my ass, and kissed me passionately. His fingers slipped between my wet folds, and I moaned against his lips. He flicked at my clit, sending me soaring.

I ground against him, and I could feel his erection against my belly.

“Oh god David, it’s been so long”

“Baby, it’s been almost 10 years for me”

I giggled.

“Then fuck me already”

Gripping my hips, he manoeuvred me over his huge cock. When I sunk down, I was where I was always meant to be. He belonged inside me.

“Oh Fay, I fucking love you”

“I love you too, so much”

He thrust his hips, pounding into me.

“Oh shit”

I groaned. Meeting each thrust with my own, it wasn’t long till we both came together. I fell onto him, and he held me tight as we lost control. We held each other for a while, just enjoying the closeness.

I slept in his bed that night. We got up early, to place Jades other gifts under the tree. Jade come running down the stairs. We both hid, and watched as she saw all the gifts. Her little face was so delighted.

“Mummy, David, Santa has been”

She yelled. We walked in the room after a few moments.

“Wow, Jade are those all for you?”

“Yeah, I think I’ve been a good girl”

“You have been a very good girl, happy Christmas baby”

She ran to us, and hugged us at the same time.

“Happy Christmas”

She smiled. We both hugged her back.

“Well, go on then, get them open”

It didn’t take long till the floor was covered in paper. She was overjoyed with her presents. I owed Hannah big time. When she had opened them all, David pulled out another 2 gifts.

“These are from me, one for you Jade, and one for Mummy”

He handed us our presents, and I smiled.

“I’m so sorry, I haven’t got you anything”

“Let Jade open hers first, then when you open mine, that will be my gift”

I gave him a quick kiss, and Jade clapped and laughed.

“Go on honey, open it up”

He smiled at her. She tore at the paper, and opened the box inside.

“Wow, Mummy look, it’s the beautiful doll”

It was the doll she had loved from Becka’s room. I gasped at him.

“That is so special, are you sure?”

“It’s only right somebody should get to enjoy them. You can play with anything you want in that room Jade”

She lunged at him, and hugged him. He held her with his eyes closed.

“I love you Jade”

He whispered.

“I love you too David”

She said. A single tear rolled down his cheek. I leaned in and kissed it away. Jade sat down on his lap.

“Mummy’s turn now”

She said. I ripped the paper off, and held the small box in my hand.

“Will you Marry David Mummy?”

Jade blurted out; as though it was something she had been holding in a long time. I opened the box, and it contained a diamond ring. I quickly looked up at them both, and they were smiling.

“I think I’m supposed to ask that Jade”

He laughed. My mouth hung open.

“I was going to do it the traditional way, but this is better. I had to tell her. I wanted to know if I could be her new Daddy”

I couldn’t hold back the tears.

“Mummy why are you upset?”

“I’m not baby I promise. I am very happy”

He said, with that gorgeous smile.

“What do you say, will you marry me?”

“Of course”

I cried. I hugged them both, Jade was screaming with happiness.

“I have a Daddy, I have a Daddy”

David kissed me.

“I love you”

He whispered.

“I love you too”

That Christmas day was the best one of my life. Hannah joined us for lunch, and she was as surprised as I had been. But she was also just as happy for us. The wedding plans moved quickly. Hannah helped me plan everything, with Jade as our boss of course.

6 months after we first met, officially, we were married. I loved him beyond reason. Hannah was having Jade while we went on our honeymoon, but we all stayed together at home on the wedding night. We were a family. It was where we belonged.

The next morning I woke Jade up, and told her a surprise. She was, as usual, overjoyed. I asked her to help me tell Daddy. We both ran into our bedroom, and jumped onto him.

“Good morning beautiful ladies”

He laughed. Jade climbed into his lap, and smiled up at him.

“Daddy, what should we call it?”

She asked. He looked at her confused.

“Call what honey?”

“My brother or sister”

He gasped at me, and I smiled, touching my stomach. He threw Jade into the air, and caught her, making her giggle. Then he placed her onto the bed, and jumped onto me, kissing me all over my face. Jade thought it was a game and joined in.

“I love you honey, both of you, the three of you so much”

“And we all love you”

“My family”

He smiled. We became a whole family, once I pushed our daughter into the world. We named her Hannah, after her godmother. I didn’t think it was possible to ever be blissfully happy. But this man, my tyrant boss, had made me happier than I could ever say. I finally had a home and a family who loved me.
