I became aware of a noise in my room, and it took me a few moments to realise, I was weeping. I hadn’t cried in years, what the hell! My bedroom door opened, and Anna peeked around at me.

“Are you ok?”

She asked. I tried to stop the tears, but I couldn’t.

“Why couldn’t that man in the letter, have been who he really was?”

I asked, more to the universe, than to Anna. She slowly approached me.

“Who”

“My dad, he died”

Anna sat next to me, and pulled me to her. I actually cried on her shoulder.

“Oh my god, Jack I am so sorry”

I pulled back, and shrugged, wiping my eyes.

“Don’t be, he was a bastard. But it sounds like he knew that at the end”

I showed her the letter. She read it, and a tear slid down her cheek.

“He loved you both”

“Except when he was using me as a punch bag”

She sighed, and took my hand.

“Jack, I don’t know the full story, it’s none of my business. But if a letter can hurt you this much, maybe you need to forgive what he did, for your own sake, rather than his”

I glanced up at her.

“Can you forgive me?”

I asked in a whisper. She hung her head.

“There is nothing to forgive. I understand”

A new tear rolled over her cheek. This one was for her, and the pain I had caused her, I knew that. I reached for her, but she pulled back.

“We have to go back to how it was before. We never hugged”

She smiled through the sadness. I just nodded, and watched her walk toward the door.

“Get some sleep; things always look better in the morning”

She said, as she closed my door. God I hated myself. I glanced at the letter again, and then at the cheques. He must have known I would read the letter, to put Beth’s cheque in there too. I was so happy I hadn’t thrown it away, she deserved this.

I heard a knock on the door, and dived up. I knew that would be mum, and she would not be impressed, if I wasn’t up and dressed. I quickly chose a dress, and fixed my hair. I ran as fast as I could down the stairs, almost tripping at the bottom.

Strong arms encircled me.

“Whoa there, watch your step princess”

Jack smiled. I glanced up at him, and he didn’t let go of my waste, much to my surprise.

‘Cough’

The noise startled us both. We turned and saw my mum watching us closely. Jack took a step away.

“The princess almost fell, your majesty. Welcome to my home”

He bowed his head, and then made his retreat. My mum didn’t even reply, which kind of annoyed me. She held out her arms to me.

“Well, do I get a hug”

I rushed over and embraced her.

“I have missed you very much my darling”

“Me too mum”

I hugged her tighter. There was nothing like a mum hug, when you were feeling down. She held my face in her hands.

“Let me look at you”

She smiled.

“My, what a change, but it really suits you sweetheart. I’m sorry you had to do all this. If we had known it would be over so soon, you wouldn’t have had to change”

“It’s ok mum, I really like it. And going the pub was amazing”

“The pub”

She didn’t sound impressed. Just then Jack came back into the room.

“You took my daughter to the pub”

She yelled at him. He looked surprised.

“It was just to test if her disguise worked your majesty, she was in no danger”

“Even so, a pub is no place for a soon to be married young lady”

I gawped at mum.

“Soon to be married, mum what are you talking about?”

“Let’s go and sit down honey, we’ll talk”

When she reached for my arm, I pulled away.

“I don’t want to sit down, tell me what you mean”

Mum looked stunned.

“Annabelle, I will not be spoken to like that”

“Mum, I’m not a damn child anymore, I’m a fully grown woman, now just tell me what you mean.

She gave Jack a look that would curdle milk.

“Is this your influence?”

She snapped.

“No, your majesty, I believe your daughter is just speaking her mind”

I smiled at him, thankful for his back up. Mum turned back to me, and sighed.

“Fine. We have someone in line for you to marry. He is a prince, and will bring a much needed economy boost to our country. It is your duty to fulfil your royal requirements”

I couldn’t believe it.

“So what you’re saying is, you’re selling me”

“Don’t be absurd. It is a mutual benefit for both our countries. It is also your fathers wish. After what happened, your father wants me to travel with him more. He wants you settled and safe, so he can do his duty, as you would be doing yours”

I felt sick. How could they expect me to just marry some stranger? I knew they were always trying to set me up, but this was something completely different.

“But I have protection”

I nodded in Jack’s direction.

“Honey, Jack is your fathers head guard. Where your father goes, he goes. He will not be there to protect you”

I felt like I was going to vomit. Mum turned to Jack.

“Did you ready the room for the meeting Jack?”

He lowered his eyes, and nodded.

“Yes your majesty, it’s all prepared”

“Good, they will be here in the next hour. Now, go and get changed, wear something respectable, to meet him and his parents”

I opened my mouth to speak.

“No more arguing Annabelle, do as I say”

She snapped. I gawped at Jack, and he wouldn’t meet my eyes.

“You knew”

I said in an accusatory tone.

“How could you do this to me?”

I cried, and ran up the stairs, slamming my bedroom door.

I watched her run up the stair, tears pouring down her cheeks, and I’ve never felt more of an asshole. I would give anything to follow her, and just hold her.

“Would you show me the room you have prepared please, Jack?”

“Of course your majesty, this way”

I led her to the back of the house. The room looked out over the huge garden, my favourite place when I was a kid. It got me away from my father.

“This is lovely Jack”

The Queen smiled at me.

“No wonder Anna said she was having such a good time. When she talked to me on the phone, which was all she would say. How much she was enjoying being here, with you”

She gave me a questioning look.

“I think it probably has a lot to do with my sister, your majesty. They have become close”

“It’s nice to make new friends. It’s when it becomes more, that problems arise”

I knew exactly what she was saying. She had obviously sensed something between me and Anna. I decided not to rise to it. There was nothing to hide anymore anyway.

“Would you like something to drink your majesty?”

I asked with a smile. She huffed through her nostrils, like a mad bull, but she smiled when she answered.

“Tea would be nice, thank you Jack”

I rushed from the room. When I walked into the hallway, I could hear shouting outside.

“Get the fuck out of my way you oaf”

I knew who that was. I popped my head out the door. Beth was squaring up to Paul, the Queens head guard.

“I fucking own this house; now get out of my way”

“Paul”

I shouted, he turned and looked at me.

“Let her through, she’s my sister”

“She still has to have her bag searched Jack”

I walked over to them.

“Give me your bag Beth”

She handed it over, without any issue. Paul watched closely, as I searched her bag.

“Happy”

I asked Paul, and he nodded and stepped aside.

“Finally”

Beth huffed, as she pushed past him.

“Sorry man”

I grinned at him.

“No worries”

He grinned back. I followed Beth inside.

“I guess the Queen is here than”

She huffed.

“What a dickhead he is”

“He’s just doing his job Beth”

“Yeah, whatever. So where is the Queen, do I get to meet her?”

“She’s in the back room, waiting for the potential groom. Probably best not to disturb her”

“How did Anna take the news?”

“How do you think? She hates me”

“Where is she?”

“In her room”

“I’ll go and see how she is. How’s your hand?

“Not too bad. Beth I need to speak to you later, once all this is dealt with”

“Ok, I’ll look after her”

She gave me a hug. Then she ran upstairs, and knocked on Anna’s door.
