Whoever said being royalty, was an easy life, didn’t have a clue what they were talking about. I had been sheltered my whole life, wrapped up in cotton wool. So when real life eventually found me, I was in no way prepared.

When the first shot rang out, I just stood there. Everybody around me hit the floor. I watched as 2 of my mums bodyguards were gunned down. I also witnessed my mum being dragged from the room, screaming, before my dad rescued her. The last thing I witnessed was one of the gunmen being overpowered.

It had all happened so fast, but to me, everything was in super slow motion. I suddenly realised I was on the floor, with a big body on top of me.

“It is ok princess, your safe; just keep your head down”

A gruff voice whispered in my ear. I closed my eyes, just absorbing the sounds and smells. The aroma reminded me of burnt matches, and the sounds were like a horror film. Screams and yelling filled the air. I was suddenly lifted into a strong pair of arms, carried across the room, and bundled into a car.

I didn’t open my eyes, till the car stopped, and I was pulled out. The fresh air bought me back to reality. I slowly peeled my eyelids back, temporarily blinded by the sunlight. When my vision cleared, I realised we were at an airport.

“What are we doing here? Where are my parents? Is my mum ok?”

I was yelling question after question, but nobody seemed to take any notice. Everybody was running around, talking into phones, yelling across the tarmac. I was completely lost. A plane landed on the runway, right by where we were parked. I realised it was my father’s plane.

A car pulled up next to ours, and I was so relieved when my mum and dad climbed out. I ran to them, and they both embraced me tightly.

“Oh sweetheart, are you ok?”

Mum asked me, with tears running freely down her face.

“I’m fine mum, are you ok? I saw what happened to Tom and Jay, are they alright?”

Fresh tears ran down her face.

“They were brave men honey; they will be looked after I’m sure”

“Sir, we need to move”

My father’s head body guard said.

“Ok thank you Jack”

My father said, as he took my mother’s and my arms, and led us both toward the plane. Before I knew it, we were in the air. My parents and Jack were at the back, discussing what, I did not know. But it looked intense. I was still totally in the dark.

When mum took the seat next to me, I had to ask her what was going on.

“Mum, who were those men?”

I finally asked, even though I knew I should not get involved in such matters.

“Try not to worry about that sweetheart, we are safe now”

“But I am worried; I am old enough now, to know what’s going on”

My mum stroked my cheek.

“Sometimes I forget how grown up you are”

“Please mum, I have a right to know”

“I just don’t want you to feel afraid, honey. But your right, you are old enough now to know the truth. Those men were part of a group of people, who have made some threats”

“Threats to who? You”

“Yes, and your father, and…”

She hung her head.

“Me too Right”

“I’m afraid so”

“What about Amy, is she safe?”

Amy was my little sister; she was away at boarding school. I was so scared for her now too.

"Amy is fine honey. No threats have been made against her. Your dad has stepped up her security at the school, just to be on the safe side”

“Why do they want to hurt us?”

“I’m not sure sweetheart. But we have to go away for a while. I and dad are going to stay in the safe house. But we want you to go with Jack”

“Go where? Why can’t I stay with you?”

“Honey, we don’t know how safe the safe house actually is. We believe somebody in your father’s security is working with the group. Jack has somewhere safe he can take you”

“But I don’t know him”

“Sweetheart, you have to be brave now. Your father trusts Jack with his life, more so he trusts him with you. That should tell you that you can trust him too. He has somewhere he can take you, where you can just blend into the background, live as a normal person for a while”

“But those men”

“They would never look for you there. We know where it is, but nobody else does, just trust us baby, please”

I just nodded. I would obviously do as they wished, but I was so afraid.

“How can I blend into anywhere mum, surely someone will recognize me?”

“Jack will take care of that, we have everything worked out, I promise you everything will be fine, and you will be safe. I just need you to listen to Jack, and do what he tells you. I swear it won’t be for too long honey”

She hugged me, and I held her tight. I had never been anywhere alone. Throughout my life, I never left my parents sides. My father was overly protective, which was why this was such a surprise, that he was sending me away.

Even when I turned 21, I had to have a formal party at the palace. When what I really wanted, was to celebrate with my friends, without a room full of stuffy guards. I had always felt like he didn’t trust me, but after today, I understood why he had been that way.

So if he was happy for Jack to protect me, so was I. I had never been alone with Jack, nor had I ever really spoken to him. He was always there, in the shadows, but he was just part of the furniture to me. My father and Jack came to sit with us, and I felt the plane starting its descent. I had no clue where we were, but the plane landed, and I was ushered off. My mum hugged me.

“Be brave my gorgeous girl, we will be in touch with Jack, if you need us, he knows how to reach us”

I nodded; words escaped me, as I tried to hold back the tears. My dad hugged me next.

“You can trust Jack honey, I know you must be scared, but just do as he says, and you will be fine, I swear”

“I will dad”

I croaked.

“We will see you very soon”

He smiled, as Jack placed a hand on my lower back, and led me toward a waiting car. I waved as we drove away. The tears flowed down my cheeks, as I watched them disappear into the distance. We drove, for what must have been an hour, before pulling off into a little sleepy looking town.

“Where are we?”

I asked Jack.

“It’s best you not know”

“Why, who am I going to tell?”

“You could say it by mistake when talking to your parents; we can’t risk anybody knowing where you are”

“But they already know where we are”

“Yes they do, but we can’t trust the phone lines are safe”

“WHAT!! Someone could have bugged us?”

“We aren’t sure yet Anna, I will tell you everything I know, when I know it. And for now, that is all I know”

I stared at him, with my mouth hung open.

He asked, glancing at me out the corner of his eye.

“You called me Anna. Nobody has ever called me Anna, beside my parents”

“I apologize, princess, but I have to treat you like anybody else for a while. We have to blend in while we are here, just a normal married couple”

“Married couple”

I spluttered. He let out a huff.

“Shit sorry, I forgot you didn’t know the full plan yet. Once we get to the house, I will explain everything”

I just nodded, and looked out the window at the beautiful surroundings. It was like we had gone back in time. Most of the buildings were made preliminary of wood. The street lights were gas canisters on top of poles, their flames illuminating the darkness.

The bar was the only place open, and it had swinging doors, like an old saloon. It was truly spellbinding. When we rounded the corner, a huge mountain came into view. The top was swallowed up by the dark skies, which made it seem like it was never ending. Snow speckled here and there, it was beautiful.

I gasped.

“Amazing isn’t it. No matter how many times I see it, it still takes my breath away”

I glanced at Jack, and in that moment, I noticed how handsome he was. He looked as awestruck as I felt, and he looked so young and carefree, like he was seeing an old friend after many years. I realised something then.

“You grew up here didn’t you?”

I asked. His head whipped around to look at me. It was like he had been snapped out of some long forgotten memory.

“How could you possibly know that?”

“Just a hunch”

I shrugged.

“Well you have good instincts. Yeah I grew up here, but I haven’t been back in a long time. Although it hasn’t changed much”

“It’s wonderful”

“Not for a 16 year old boy, who is bored out of his mind”

Again I looked at Jack, and imagined him as a 16 year old. It was so strange to just study his features, I’d never bothered before. He was not as old as I assumed he was. I’d say early 30’s. He had a strong jaw, and very bright blue eyes. His lips were full, and quite red in colour. His hair was neat, cut into his neck, but slightly long and wavy on top.

My eyes moved down his body. God he was big. I could see the muscles in his arms clench, as he controlled the car. How had I never noticed how gorgeous he was? He was so different to all the gentlemen who I had met through my parents. They were all so stiff and stuck up. Jack was a real man’s man, rough and ready, as my friend Kim would say. He glanced at me, catching my wondering eyes.

“Everything ok over there?”

He grinned. I felt my face flush, and looked away quickly. We sat in silence the rest of the journey. I was starting to feel tired, when we pulled up outside a huge house on a hill. It overlooked the whole town we had just passed through.

“This is where we are staying for a while”

“I don’t have any of my stuff”

I gasped, realising I had been given no time to pack.

“It’s ok. Everything you will need tonight is already inside. We will sort the rest out tomorrow”

I nodded, and followed him as he walked up the steps. He showed me around the house. It was totally beautiful, more so than our palace, I would say. The palace was so clinical, this was a proper home. There were pictures all over the walls. Mostly of a young boy, whom I guessed was Jack, and a young girl.

There was one rather large painting above a huge fireplace. It was of a beautiful woman, with a handsome man and the same two children in the other pictures.

“Are those your parents?”

I asked. He just nodded, looking rather sadly at the image. I didn’t ask any more questions, I could tell he didn’t want to talk about it. He eventually showed me to my room, the bed was huge, and I couldn’t wait to curl up on it.

“Are you hungry?”

He asked. I hadn’t realised till he asked, just how hungry I was. I hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast, and it was now 10pm. I had been too nervous to eat at the party; my parents had once again set up meetings with eligible bachelors. I always hated those parties anyway.

“I am actually”

I muttered. He led me to the kitchen. As he checked out the fridge and cupboards, I checked out him. He had removed his tie and jacket, and I could see more of his body, he really was spectacular.

“How would you feel about a burger? We have meat and buns, that’s about it for now”

“That would be fine”

“Great, grab the buns, you can toast them, while I fry the burgers”

I walked over to the cupboard he pointed to, and got out the buns. I unwrapped 4, and laid them on the grill. I realised then, I had no clue how to light the flame. I felt so foolish.

“Erm, how do I…”

Jack smiled.

“I’m so sorry; I forgot you have probably never cooked for yourself, have you”

I shook my head.

“It’s ok, you go and take a seat, and I’ll do this”

“No, I can do it, just show me how to light it”

He leaned over, his arm brushed against mine, making me jump back. He showed me how to light the grill, but I was too lost to hear him. He was standing so close to me, and he smelt divine. He moved back to the sizzling burgers, and left me to it. I managed to cook the buns, without burning them.

I was quite proud of my achievement, however small. We sat and ate supper together, in silence. I felt so awkward. These new feelings I was having toward Jack, were unsettling. I needed to just be alone, today had been a hard day.

“Can I go to bed?”

I asked, sheepishly.

“Of course you can. You can do whatever you like here, there are no rules”

He smiled. No rules. That sounded strange to me.

“There are some pyjamas in the closet in your room; they should fit you for now”

“Thank you”

I smiled back, and headed upstairs.

I watched her go, and wanted so badly to pull her back, and just hug her. The poor girl had been through so much today. And tomorrow was also going to be hard on her. I still couldn’t believe those bastards had gotten so close. I desperately wanted to be back there, finding out how. But the princess needed me now.

When King Gerald had asked me to keep her safe, I of course, had agreed. I knew it was going to be difficult, being alone with her, but I never realised just how difficult. I had first met Anna when she was just 16. She was such a beautiful young girl. With her long flowing blond hair, deep blue eyes, and a smile to die for.

As she grew, I couldn’t help noticing how she developed into a gorgeous woman. She was absolutely stunning. Being her father’s head guard, I luckily hadn’t had to spend much alone time with her. I wasn’t sure I would be able to control myself around her. Each time she was near me, the urge to kiss her had grown. I fought it daily, and I was winning the battle. That was till today.

When I saw those gun men, my first instinct had not been to protect the king, but to protect her. That was the main reason King Gerald had asked me to take her away, he knew I could be trusted to keep her safe. I had apologized profusely that I had not protected him first, but he had brushed it off.

“My first priority is my baby girl Jack, I can’t thank you enough for protecting her, and I trust you implicitly with her life”

He had shaken my hand, and then we had made the plans, which would come into effect tomorrow, first thing. I just hoped Anna would not be too difficult. I had to remember, she was still just a young girl. Even at 22, she had never even really lived a normal life; it would no doubt be hard to adjust. I would have to just be there for her, in whatever way she needed me. Professionally obviously, anything else was out of the question.

I sat at the kitchen table, and for the first time since we had arrived, I realised where I was. I hated being in this house, it held way to many memories for me. I hadn’t been back here for years. Beth stayed here now and then, but even she couldn’t settle here. The past was all too present at the moment.

I opened my eyes, and for a second I forgot where I was. A rush of panic shot through me. Then it all came flooding back. I held my head in my hands, and cried. I heard the front door bell ringing, so I jumped up, and looked over the banister. Jack answered the door, and a beautiful red head, flung herself into his arms.

“I have missed you so much”

She cried, as he lifted her, and swung her around.

“Me too Beth”

Jack said, while kissing her over and over on the face.

“You look amazing”

He smiled, placing her back on her feet. A pang of jealousy washed over me, as he led her to the living room, with his arm around her. I went back to my bedroom, and pulled on the dress from last night. I had nothing else to wear. I walked down the stairs, and snuck toward the living room, listening for any noises. I didn’t want to walk in on them kissing, or god-forbid, anything else.

When I heard voices, I knew it was safe for me to enter. They both looked at me, when I walked in the room. Jack stood up.

“Anna, this is Beth, she is a beautician, she is here to find out what you need, and help you look different”

“Look different?”

I asked.

“I thought your mum had explained to you, that you need to change your appearance”

“She said I wouldn’t be recognized, she didn’t explain how”

He gently grabbed my arm, leading me to the couch.

“Sit down, I’ll explain everything”

I took a seat, and he sat on the table in front of me. I listened as he explained the plan.

“Your mum and dad want you to disappear. The only way to do that, is to live amongst “normal” people for a while”

He used his fingers to make the speech marks when he said normal. I found that rude, I was normal, wasn’t I?

“We came up with the idea of saying we had just wed, that way it wouldn’t seem strange I was coming home after so long. I can just say I wanted to show my new wife my family home”

That did make sense.

“We chose this town because its old and not many people follow current affairs. The most news they get, is from the local rag. But just in case, we have to change how you look. Is that ok with you?”

I just shrugged.

“I guess so. I don’t really have a choice do I?”

Jack took my hands in his.

“Anna, you always have a choice, we only want you to do this for your own safety. But if you are happy staying inside for the duration of our stay, that’s your choice. I just assumed you might want to go into the town”

I thought about what he was saying. I could go out, do normal things, be just another girl, living her life. I couldn’t help smiling.

“Of course I want to go into the town, I would love that”

“So you’re ok with change?”

“Yes, its fine with me”

“Ok, Beth, do your stuff”

Beth held her hand out to me, and I took it.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you princess, if you’ll come with me, we’ll get started”

I shook her hand, and then stood up, following her back upstairs. She led me into another bedroom, and put the bags she was carrying onto the bed.

“So, do you have any particular colour in mind?”

She asked.

“For your hair”

“Oh, what would you recommend?”

“Maybe, darker, brown or black. It would be a big change, but it is your choice, as Jack said”

“My friend has got really dark hair, cut short, I always like her style”

“Ok then, so darker, and short?”

I thought for a second. I had always wanted a change, I hated my hair. I nodded.

“Yes why not”

I grinned at Beth, who looked so excited.

“This is going to be amazing”

She said with glee. Half an hour later, she held up a mirror to me.

“Well, what do you think?”

I couldn’t speak. The person in the mirror was not me at all. She was really pretty, with cute features, and she looked happy.

“Don’t keep me waiting, do you like it?”

“I love it”

I smiled.

“I look so different”

“That’s the point honey”

Beth grinned. She nudged my arm.

“Jack likes girls with dark hair”

I looked at her, mouth agape.

“I thought it was red heads he liked”

She frowned, and then realisation crossed her face.

“Oh my god, you think me and Jack…Eww”

“But he was kissing you, and you hugged him”

“Sweetheart, you couldn’t be further from the truth. Jack is my big brother. I haven’t seen him for a long time, I was just happy to see him”

“I am so sorry, I just assumed…”

“Hay, don’t worry about it, easy mistake to make. Anyway, swift change of subject, what shall we dress you in?”

She had laid out a few outfits for me. They were nothing like I would ever have chosen, but they were so pretty.

“I like the dress”

She held up the summer dress, and hung it around my neck. Turning me to face the mirror, I looked at myself and was truly shocked, I looked stunning.

“I really like it, it goes perfectly with your new look”

“Thank you so much Beth, I can’t believe how different I look”

“No problem honey, go and change, and then we can reveal you to Jack. I’m sure he’ll love it too”

She grinned at me again. It was a knowing grin, like she could see into my mind, and knew how I had been feeling toward him. I changed, and then Beth put some makeup on me.

“You look amazing; you’re my best work ever”

I smiled wide, and then hugged the girl. She was so pleased, and so was I. When we went back downstairs, Jack was lying on the couch.

“Well, what do you think Jack”

He stood up, and then looked me up and down. His cheeks pinked, and he looked away.

“That’s acceptable”

He muttered, before taking his seat again. Beth gave me a sad smile.

“Thank you for the compliment Jack”

I snarled, before heading back to my room.

“What the fuck is wrong with you; didn’t you see how amazing she looked?”

Beth snapped at me.

“Yes I saw”

I answered.

“Acceptable, that’s the best you could come up with. Jesus Jack, you really are an insensitive prick sometimes”

She grabbed her bags, and stormed out too. I had managed to piss off two women in a matter of seconds. I had to ignore how she looked, because I almost lost myself and grabbed hold of her. I have never wanted someone, as much as I wanted her in that moment. The uncomfortable feeling in my pants was testament to that.

She was beyond beautiful, beyond stunning, she took my breath away. The way her hair hugged her face, the way the colour set off her eyes, the way the dress clung to her magnificent body. God I had to get a grip. I hated that I had made her feel so bad. She had looked so happy standing there, till I had opened my big mouth.

I had to make this right with her, because we had to live together for a while, if for no other reason. I headed up to her room, and tapped on the door.

“Princess, can I come in?”

When she didn’t answer, I tapped again.

“Princess, are you ok?”

The door flew open, and I could tell she was mad.

“I have gone through all this change, cut my hair, dyed it, changed how I dress, for what?”

I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to answer, but after a few seconds of silence, I realised I had to.

“It’s so you won’t be recognized”

“Yet you stand here, outside my door, calling me princess. So the rule applies to me, but not you”

“I’m sorry ok, I was insensitive, and yes I just fucked up. But this is as new to me, as it is to you. I have never lived with a woman, besides Beth, and that was tough enough”

“Well I’m so sorry I’m putting you out”

She tried to shut the door, but I put my foot in the way.

“You know I didn’t mean it like that. I’m just trying to explain why I’m not very tactful. I’d like to just state for the record though, I think you look stunning. The hair really suits you, and you…well you are gorgeous ok”

I turned and walked back downstairs, leaving her looking dumbstruck.
