I did love my job. I just wished I didn’t fancy my boss, Bradley West, especially when he never gave me the time of day. He wasn’t a bad boss; it was just frustrating, when your major crush didn’t really see you.

He yelled. I quickly grabbed my notepad and headed into his office. Paul O’Connor, Mr West’s stylist, was sitting on the couch, in the corner of the room. He smiled at me as I walked in. I grinned back.

He was a really nice man Paul. He was an amazing stylist. He had styled some of the most famous people in the world. I had always been such a fan of his work.

“Victoria, I need you to make a few phone calls, and find someone who is free for tonight”

Mr West said without even looking up, which was the norm.

“Would that be out of your private book Mr West?”

“Yes, I need a date for the ball. My date has let me down last minute, I will not go alone”

I nodded and left the office. After calling every number in his little black book, I had had no joy at all. Everybody was either busy, or they just refused to go out with him again. I knocked on his door.

He said. I walked in and stood in front of his desk. I would always wait for him to acknowledge me, before I could speak. It was something that was installed in me, from a young age. My grandmother was a stickler for manners.

After a few moments he glanced up.

“I’m sorry sir; I was unable to get you a date. Most of your contacts are already attending the ball”

He yelled, making me jump.

“I’ll go with you”

Paul laughed. Mr West looked at him like he had suggested they kill his entire family.

“Maybe not”

He shrugged, giving me a smile. I only just managed not to laugh at him. I turned back to look at Mr West, and he was eyeing me up.

“Paul, do you think you could possibly do anything with that”

I raised my eyebrows at the utter insult. Ok I may not be aesthetically pretty, and I had no sense of style. But I was not a, that.

“Excuse me”

I gasped, without meaning to. Mr West looked at me with surprise. I had never answered him back. I just hung my head, not wanting to cause any trouble.

“I’m thinking makeover, total change. I need you to do your best work. Tonight is very important, and I cannot go alone”

I looked at Paul and again he smiled.

“I will see what I can do”

My eyes darted from one man to the next. Not one of them had even thought to ask me if I would go. Paul must have seen my shocked expression.

“Bradley, don’t you think it’s custom to ask a young lady out on a date, instead of just assuming she will go”

He looked up from his computer.

“Sorry Victoria, but as its work, I’ll pay you time and a half. Paul will drop you off at the hall tonight. Be there by 8pm”

He said that last part to Paul. I knew that was the closest thing I would probably get to an invitation.

“Is that ok with you honey?”

Paul asked me, I just shrugged. I could do with the cash, and getting a makeover from Paul O’Connor was an honour.

“Well then, maybe we should go and get started”

He stood up. I stayed rooted to the spot. Mr West glanced up at me.

“Will there be anything else before I go Mr West?”

“No, thank you Victoria”

He said. I walked out with Paul, and he waited for me to grab my stuff.
