Chapter 4

Sam was playing the guitar in the pub. Dave and Rita were looking after the shop, Ann was around somewhere, and Jason came in with his guitar,
“Fancy having a session?” asked Jason,
“Sure, why not, take a seat Have you learned anything new?”
“Yeah, youll love this, by Aslan. Lucy in the sky with diamonds, it’s an old song they redid.”
“No shit it’s an old song, it’s a Beatles song. Did you ever hear of The Beatles?” Sam asked. “Really, I didn’t know that.” Jason said with a grin on his face.
“You’re spending too much time here, my sarcasm is rubbing off, ok show me what youre doing wrong.” He said then Emily, Max and Alice arrived and joined in, they were all very good singers.
Max played guitar as well.as Jason. The session had been going for over an hour when Cora came in and sat at the table with them, Sam started to play a song. …….. “Grow old alone with me; the best is yet to be.When our time has comewe will be as oneGod bless our love,God bless our love.”…….When Sam finished Cora said,
”Sorry to break this up but I want Sam”
“Well if you ever get fed up with Sam, and you need a younger model I’m available,” said Jason.to Cora.
 “In your dreams,” answered Cora.”
“No,” said Sam, “Not even in your dreams, no…. no one dream about my wife, you’re too young.” He said pointing his finger at them. They just laughed.“So you want me,”said Sam.
“You have no idea how much I want you,” said Cora softly in his ear.
“Oh you mean it, well hem; let’s go upstairs,” said Sam indicating with his hand.
Upstairs was an office, a sitting room for the staff to have a break and a sitting room Sam and Cora used now again. Cora put her arms around his neck, pressed her lips against his,
“There is some movement I think we will be heading to the hospital sometime today so be prepared.” she said. That night Sarah was born.

Mrs Brown started to pray, so the rest of the procession joined in. Joe pulled at Sam,
“Why is everyone praying?” He asked.
“Because they are afraid,” said Sam
“Afraid of what?” Joe asked. Sam thought for a second,
“Afraid of what Fr. Donal will say to them for being bold.” He said.
“Oh,” said Joe, “Should I pray too,” he asked.
“If you want to,” said Sam,
“Or just listen to your music, which ever you prefer” he said to the child.
“I think Ill listen to my music,” said Joe.
“Yeah, I think Ill do the same.” said Sam and he put on his music.
When the procession reached the end of Meadow Grove and turned onto Barton Road there was a group of about twenty men armed with knives, pipes and chains. They looked like they were getting ready to fight. They spread out across the road blocking the way to the church. As the procession moved out onto Barton Road they stopped praying, they also moved across the road so they were face to face.
To the young men it must have looked strange about sixty people praying, but also armed to the teeth with knives, shovels, pickaxes, one man even had a bow and arrows. To everyone’s surprise he just fired one arrow hitting one of the men in the chest. The rest of them just ran off in different directions. Sam looked at the man with the bow, he just shrugged his shoulders. So they continued on to the church without any more problems.
When they reached the car park  for Dun drum Centre there was a small group of people, Sam recognised a couple of them, there was Nicola and Barbara they were a couple, Delores and Samantha also a couple, James and Paul, they seemed to be all gay.,
“Why are you here?” asked Sam.
“We didn’t want to go into the church. You know how they feel about gays.” said Nicola.
“Ok, come on stick with me,” said Sam. That brought back another memory.

Max, Jason, Emily and Alice were having a little session going and the rest of the customers were enjoying it.
“They really get the place going dont they,” Fr. Donal said.
“Yeah, they are very talented young people.” Said Sam.
“Hi can I help,” Sam asked, two young men standing behind Fr. Donal,
“Are you here to join in,” Asked Sam.
“If it would be possible,” One of the young men answered he was also holding a violin case in his hand,
“Are you going to have something to drink,” Sam asked.
“Coke and a large latté please,” asked the young man. They talked to Fr. Donal while Sam got their drinks.
“Whats you’re names?” asked Sam.
 “Im William”
“Im Simon.” Answered the other young man.
“Ok Im Sam; now let’s introduce you to the lads.” They sat down after introductions and joined in. They were pretty good too.
“I think those lads are gay.” said Fr. Donal in a whisper,
“There is something in the way they talk,” he said.
“Well we know what the Pope thinks about that, but I didn’t think you were like him, said Sam, “Hes a short sighted narrow minded hypocrite,” said Sam.
“No Im not but the church has strict views on gays; and sex before marriage, condoms, and masturbation.” said Fr. Donal and I don’t agree with everything but I think in time things will change for the better.
“Well I dint like him, he even has views on Harry Potter but who gives a fuck on his views, I would say not many, I mean look a J.K. Rowling, she’s a multi-millionaire now, and the young people can’t wait till the films come out” said Sam just a little annoyed. “Look those two guys, they look happy and if you can get happiness in this world who gives a fuck who it is with, who was it said, judge not lest you be judged, or something like that,” said Sam.
“Sam I can always depend on you to bring me down to earth,” said Fr. Donal.

“Are we all going into the church?” asked Joe; bring Sam out of his thoughts.
“Were just going into see if Fr. Donals is here” answered
There were cars and buses parked in front of the church. Dun drum village looked like a car park. Now the sky was a bright blue the clouds had disappeared, there was only the sound of prepaying coming from the church. Sam entered and looked around at everyone as he walked down the aisle.
“Why stay indoors, we should be in the open.” he said softly to himself. Sam and his procession in front of the alter. Fr. Donal was leading everyone in prayer. Sam looked around, the church was full.
“This doesn’tt feel right.” Said Sam to no one in particular in a loud voice. The church fell silent, “Fr. Im going to go to Marley Park, it’s a lovely morning, God created it. If the end is coming I want to be out in the open feeling the sun on my face, God wont mind where we pray to him. Anyone who wants to come along your all welcome.” said Sam.
“Sam,” said Fr. Donal, “That sounds like a wonderful idea. I just need to bring a few things,”he said and gathered some things from the alter.
“There’s a lot of people here to help with whatever you need,” said Sam, Everyone rose from their seats and filed out of the church.
“Anyone know how to drive a bus?” asked Sam holding onto Joe and Sarah as everyone passed. Outside people packed into cars and buses. Sam saw Jason and Alice coming out of Dun drum house carrying cases of beer, then more people came out carrying more, they were raiding the Eagle House and the off-licence as well,
“I hope you got enough for everyone,” asked Sam.
“Were not finished yet,” answered Alice.
A Garda came up to Sam,
“Are you in charge?” he asked.
“No one is in charge, Im just going to Marley and everyone seems to be joining me,” said Sam. “Well is there anything I can do to help,” the Garda asked.
“Whats your name?” Asked Sam.
“Tom,” he answered
“Well Tom, we’re going to need those cars moved first so we can get moving, so if you can get a moved on that lot. That would be great thanks.” said Sam.
“Leave it to me,” he said.
“Why dont you take a cold beer or two while you move them,” offered Sam.
“Dont mind if I do, thanks,” said Tom.
“Have you got an opener,” asked Sam
“Never leave home without one.” said Tom.
“We just got beer and some minerals for the kids, do you want us to make coffee as well because we can,” said Jason.
“No need for coffee youve got enough” said Sam, and that reminded him of something.

Sam lay relaxing in the bath, the water too hot to move around in and listening to The Beatles on his I pod playing all albums, he would sing along to a song every now and again. Cora walked into the room,
“The kids are gone to the pictures with Ann,” she said. That looks inviting?” Cora added.
“Well come on in,” offered Sam. To Sams surprise she just took off her clothes and got in in front of him.
“Oh this is hot,” she said easing herself down.
“Thats not the only thing thats hot.” Sam said. When she finally got down in the water she lay back against him.
“You look so fantastic, even after two kids. You’re so beautiful and so sexy especially when your naked.” he said as he put his arms around her and as suspected rested his hands on her breasts, he began to massage them.
“You know what this is going to lead to,” said Cora.
“Yeah I hope so.” answered Sam.
When the water cooled down enough Cora turned around and kissed Sam passionately, they made love. Their bodies seemed to know what each one needed, their bodies move as one. After they dried each other off, they lay naked on the bed just hugging each other
. “Guess what,” Cora asked
“You would like a coffee and two muffins.” said Sam.
“What do you mean?” asked Cora
 “Are we pregnant?” Sam said.
“No! Im pregnant, but how do you know?” she asked as she sat up in the bed.
“I know you that well,” he said.
 “Your bullshitting me?” she said.
“Id never bullshit you, love.” he answered.
“Tell me how did you know?” Cora asked.
“I didn’t know for sure until you said, guess what, I thought I heard you getting sick the last couple of mornings, that was when I first suspected, we are so close, its like, you are the fish, I am the sea, you are the honey, I am the bee,” said Sam. another quote of Lennons,
“I love you so much Sam, I don’t know what I’d do without you. Ok now Ill have that coffee and muffins now thank you.”

Sam was standing at the bus with Joe and Sarah, when Fr. Donal came up to them.
“Wheres Cora and Sandra,” he asked.
Tears started running down Sams face again, “They killed them,” he cried, “I couldn’t stop them, I wasnt able to save Cora or Sandra, I wasnt able to do anything and it hurts, it hurts right here.” Sam put his hand over his heart.
“I dont want the pain to go away because of what they went through. I feel I deserve more pain then what Im feeling now. Fr. I feel so useless, I couldn’t even protect Sarah. I feel ashamed of myself, because I lived and they died.”
Fr. Donal put his arm around Sam. “Sam, Im so sorry,” he said, then he put his arm around Sarah, she still held onto Sam, but she wasnt afraid of Fr. Donal she didn’t pull away from him. “Ill pray for Cora and Sandra,” said Fr. Donal.
“Thanks Fr. But Im hoping well be with them soon.” said Sam as he wiped the tears from his eyes.
“Then Ill pray well be with them soon.” said Fr. Donal.
“Ok gentlemen let’s get on the bus.” said Tom as he approached the bus, “Once this bus moves the convoy will be off to Marley.”
On the bus Fr. Donal was talking to some of the children, he was good with kids. They seemed to enjoy his company and he has a good sense of humour, he is one of the very few good priests, unfortunately we never hear about the good that they do it’s only the bad ones that we get to hear about; that got Sam thinking again.

Sam, Alice, Max, Jason and a few others were having a session when Fr. Donal walked into the shop.
“Can I get a large coffee,” he said as he sat beside Paul.
“Feel free to join in singing Fr. you have a good singing voice we have heard you on Sundays.” said Jason.
“Youve got a good voice too Jason, you could become a good priest,” said Fr. Donal.
The lads laughed at that.
“I dont think so Fr. Jason couldn’t keep it in his pants for very long,” said Max.
 Then they all laughed.
“Celibacy is only one part of priesthood,” said Fr. Donal.
“Yeah but it’s a part Jason cant give up.” said Alice.
“Hay dont be picking on me, I dont want to be a priest. Black isnt my colour.” said Jason. “Anyway it was probably some gay pope thought up this celibate idea, he just wanted the boys together.” said Sam.
“Im afraid to ask where you are going with this.” asked Fr. Donal.
“Yeah Sam explain yourself.” said Paul.
“Ok, Jesus was the only man besides Mel Gibson who knew what women wanted, and do you think he kept it under his robes; especially as a teenager. That’s why we dont know what he did from twelve to thirty, otherwise known as the bonking years.” said Sam and the lads burst out laughing except Fr. Donal.
“Imagine Jesus, Peter, Paul, Mary walking through the market. Jesus would be saying,
 “Look Peter she wants you.”
“Does she really?” Peter would say.
“She wants me and she wants me as well, and she wants me too.” Jesus might say smiling. “Ok how come so many want you?” Mary might ask.
“Ok Mary let’s see who wants you.” Jesus might say.
“That brown eyed, dark haired slim young women wants you Mary.” Jesus might say with a wink.
“You guys are disgusting.” Mary would say. Something like that might be their daily conversation as they do their chores.” said Sam, and they all laughed.
Cora came up to the table, “Sam are you miss behaving again?” she asked.
“Does he do anything else?” Fr. Donal answered.
 “Tell tale.” Sam said.
“Sorry to break this up but Sam we have to go to the hospital for our check-up;” said Cora.
“How are you doing?” asked Fr. Donal, “You are looking great.”
 “Thank you Fr.” said Cora.
“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbours wife.” said Sam.
“I thought you said Moses made them up,” said Fr. Donal, “Or are you changing your mind about that.”
“No, no, answered Sam, “You go ahead, you covet away, you covet to the masses.” said Sam.
“You still haven’t said why you think a gay pope brought in celibacy.” Fr. Donal said
“Well to cut is short, The Apostils had families and when the gay pope fell in love with one of his priests he realised he could save a lot of money not having to provide for a lot of families, it’s just economics.
When they pulled into Marley there was already a crowd of people there, a bus had crashed through the gate so there was no problem getting in. Everyone piled out of the buses and cars, the park was unusually full for six thirty Tuesday morning, the sun was shining on the Dublin Mountain’s it was starting off to look be a beautiful day. Sam saw Fr. Donal make up a makeshift altar from one of the benches.
Joe asked, “Can I play football with the other kids?”
“Go ahead but dont go far.” said Sam. Kids get easily distracted especially when theres so much fear around them. Sarah just wanted to hold Sams hand. Sam remembered when they were much happier kids.

“Will you build me a sand car.” asked Joe as they took the picnic out of the car and headed down to the beach.
“Ok Joe you want a car.” said Sam as he dug a hole for Joe to sit in.
“Now put your legs out straight.” he said as he pushed sand over Joe and then he would make the shape of a car.
“It looks like Noddies car.” said Joe.
“Sarah do you want me to make you a car.” asked Sam.
“No I want an aeroplane.” she said. Sandra would help getting started, and then Sam and Sandra would finish it.

Tears streamed down Sams face as he remembered how good life was with Cora and the kids. Through the tears he smiled as he remembered Sandra in her pageant, she played Mary, and Paul, played Joseph, they pretending to knock on doors looking for a room but when Joseph knocked on a door she would put her hand on her back and pushing her tummy out as if she were really pregnant. Then when they reached the stable she got Joseph to help her down to the ground and putting her knees in the air. She moaned and next produced a doll from under her costume. Sam and Cora laughed quietly but the principal wasnt impressed. When it was finished, the parish priest congratulated them for a very accurate performance. Sam had so many good thoughts; there was Euro Disney, Glendalough and camping.
The pain Sam was feeling was growing, he just wanted to burst.
Then the air raid sirens went off. Joe ran to Sam. All the kids ran to their parents. Couples gathered together. Even some gay couples openly hugged and kissed each other.
“Now why does it have to come to a disaster for people to be accepted for who they are” Sam thought, Sam thought of Christine.
Cora and Sam were sitting in their sitting room. Sam had his arms around Cora as they lay on the sofa listening to Barry White. The room was lit up only by the light of the fire.
 “Whos Christine?” Cora asked.
“She is a very old dear friend, but dont say I called her old.” answered Sam,
“We meet when I was about thirteen. She was called Ciaran then.” he said.
 “What?” said Cora?
“Yeah, she was once a boy.” Sam said.
“Typical,” said Cora.
“What do you mean?” Sam asked.
“Any girl would kill for those legs and her waist is so small it makes me jealous.” said Cora.
“Well when I started drinking at eighteen, we would meet up in a pub in Ranelagh and he was so intelligent but he still seemed interested in talking to me. Even though a lot of what he said went over my head. I could grasp some of what he said and I was able to give a reasonable answer. I tried reading one of the books he said was great, well after fifteen minutes and I hadnt gotten passed the first page I gave up, but I enjoy our talks. During that time I never noticed him struggling with any problems, he was going to college, he learned to play the guitar, we even had some very good sessions together. Later in life he was having problems and went to counselling and thats when it all surfaced. Id tried to be there for him during the change. Now shes a very talented woman, her paintings are as good as the old master’s, she plays the piano now as well. Even though she wasnt around in the sixties to burn her bra I let her do her bit for womens liberation by letting her pay for dinner whenever we met up.” said Sam.

“What’s that noise?” asked Joe.
“Its to let kids know they should be with their parents.” said Sam. Sam gave Joe and Sarah a hug and kissed them on the check.
“Put your music on” he said.
An old man walked by, “God will come to save us.” he said as he looked to the sky for God to appear.
“No he won’t,” said Sam, “Hes not coming.”
“What?” said the man looking at Sam slightly confused. “God said the meek shall inherit the earth” he added.
“What makes you think God was talking about man when He said meek? He created all life not just the human race. So were going to him, hell be there waiting for us.” Sam said.
“Why? Now the old man seemed to be looking for hope but Sam had none to offer.
“This is the last day.” Sam said, “I hope he is in a good mood because I havent been exactly on my best behaviour today.” The noise seemed to be getting louder. Sam gave Joe and Sarah another hug, the tears running down his face.
“It wont be long now.” he whispered. Everybody hushed; there was the sound of laughter from a baby that distracted everyones attention from the noise. Its mother played with the child, her eyes red from crying, trying not to show the fear on her face as she tried to make her childs last few moments of life happy.
“Thats one of Gods best creations, laughter, it’s a pity it will never be heard again” Sam put his earphones in, flicked on his I pod scrolled down to The Beatles, picked the white album, scrolled down to Revolution and pressed play with full volume. As the words sang out.
(“You say you want a revolution well you know; we all want to change the world,)
Sam raised his bottle of Bud towards Fr. Donal. Fr. Donal waved from his makeshift altar. He produced a Miller and raised it toward Sam and they both drank.
“Cora,” said Sam, “Were on our way,” tears streaming down his face,
“Can you put in a good word with the big guy for me.” He said. Then they felt the ground vibrate and everything started to shake. Sam held tight to Joe and Sarah, through his teary eyes he looked at another of Gods beautiful creations the Dublin mountains, the sun was shining the sky a clear pale blue and The Beatles sang in his ears, (“Dont you know its going to be alright, Dont you know its going to be alright, Dont you kn………..)
