Summary

Youth is an interesting time in our lives. We want to think we are making all the right decisions but life is a journey of experiences. We don't know what tomorrow holds and often we get impatient and ... rush that which was meant to be an enjoyable journey and wonderful learning experience. Regrets ... No, but the memories always remain.

Senior Trip

HE was a Senior in college. Finally, it was almost over but there was a final field trip that was a requirement. He had been taking extra courses so he could work possibly with the YMCA or Boy Scouts, something in the area of Youth Agency Leadership. This trip was to cap off the program and was intended as a fun trip with the others who had been pursuing the same course of study. They flew as a group to San Francisco, California. What a beautiful city!

He struck up conversations with this person and that, intending to get to know them better. He had been to California before but never without family. This was different and exciting. After all the studying and working at times multiple jobs just to be able to stay in school, this was such a treat. It was nice not to have to deal with the same old daily routine.

One day, he struck up conversation with one of the young ladies in the group. Several hours passed and they were still enjoying each other's company. He found her to be absolutely delightful, energetic and extremely interesting. She was a very attractive student of his same age and with so many of the same types of goals. As time evolved, he found himself walking with her as they would visit different points of interest as a whole group. He tried to be careful to not allow the others to see his attraction to this female and tried to be very low key but he wasn't very successful. After all, he barely noticed anyone else the rest of the trip. Still, there was this ... attachment that he knew he felt and she definitely wasn't trying to ... shy away from him.

One day, they visited the mighty Red Woods where the towering trees make you look so small. They walked the trails and it was a bit chilly so he offered her his ... coat pocket for her to slip her hand in. Naturally, his hand was in the same pocket. The warmth generated managed to engulf his whole body. So much heat from just hiding her hand in his! His heart was trying to escape from his chest because he could hear it pounding. If only this time could never end! His memories of the Red Woods are only of walking with her. Very little else about the trip even comes to mind. She filled his heart with wonder and ... pain at the same time.

There is an old saying, ......... "all good things MUST come to an end." Who ever came up with the saying should be strung up and shot though it would not change the reality of it:) The trip flew by and before they knew it, it was time to return to Texas and the college life they had left behind. Would things somehow be different when they returned? Would they now be able to establish a wonderful and electric relationship that they could one day look back on ... beginning in California because of a little ... student trip? Would he be able to walk the campus holding her tiny hand in his, talking about what the future held for them both? He had tried to behave himself with her on the trip but the thought of her hand in his would linger on his mind and in his heart at times as he ... returned home ...

... to his wife whom he had married between his Sophomore and Junior year of college. The memory of that trip still lingers to this day. She was special and with the exception of holding hands, he had been ... careful.

He was married and yet very lonely. He had married too young and because of how he had been raised, he did not believe in divorce at the time and always thought and hoped that his marriage would get better. He stayed married for 27 years to the same woman and yes, there are times he looks back on that little trip and ... dreams, .... dreams of what he may have missed. Ah ... life, love and memories ... can be such sweet sorrow at times.
