"Grace!" Hazel called.

Though she was not audible. Music blasted from the huge speakers and the whole place was crowded with people dancing.

"Saturday Night." Said Chris into her ears, watching the crowd dancing. Then, from thin air, produced two glasses of champagne.

Hazel took hold of the glass and drained its contents in one go.

Too many drinks, Hazel thought.

She knew she'd regret the hangover later but walked to the counter and ordered another drink. Sitting on the tall stools, she saw Grace and on reflex, got down to reach her. But she stopped mid way when she saw a silhouette of a man. Tall, broad shoulders and a nice haircut.

She saw them kiss. She sighed and turned around. Can't be her mum all the time, she thought. Enjoy your 18th birthday, Grace. And returned to her own drink. Last one.

"Hey. Wanna dance?" She turned around to see Chris, smiling, flaunting his beautiful, white teeth. Hazel nodded and tried to get down. Her legs wobbled and it seemed impossible to stand straight. She cursed the last drink while she clung to Chis's arm.

"Careful." He held her arms and looked at her. Then with a worrying look, said, "Let's drop you home."

Hazel didn't argue but asked, " Where's Grace?"

Chris answered, " I haven't seen her." He looked around, still surrounded by people a enjoying their saturday night to the fullest. "She'll be here. Dancing . Don't worry. I'll ask Even to drop her home."

He looked at Hazel. She still looked worried. "No need to be her mother all the time. " To this, Hazel rolled her eyes.

"Should we leave then?"

"Yes."

Chris led Hazel towards the exit. They squeezed out of the crowded disco.

Outside, it was this cool autumn night in Seattle. The trees on the pavement had beautiful golden leaves which were about to fall. Chris held the car door open and Hazel got in. Then he ran to the other side, sat in the driver’s seat and zoomed off.

Chris drove her through the streets. The golden street lights falling on Chris’s face, giving him a pleasant glow.

From where hazel was sitting, she could see his perfect jaw line. Chris was watching the road in front of him and gritted his teeth once in a while.

She looked at him and smiled, unknowingly, unconsciously.

“Why’re you smiling?” asked Chris, narrowing his eyes a bit, to give a look of suspicion.

“Just like that..” Hazel said dreamily. She closed her eyes and revisited the night and fell asleep.

Chris shook her after a while.

“We’re here.” He said in a soft voice.

Hazel opened her eyes, feeling tired after being awaken from the incomplete sleep, rubbed her eyes and sat up to leave. She opened the car door and said before leaving, ”Thanks for the ride. Good night.”

”Anytime. Good night.”

He waited until she reached the door, waved at him and went inside.

Hazel heard the car engine roar and zoom off. She climbed the stairs to her room. The place was dark. Her parents were obviously asleep.

She sat on her bed and unlocked her phone to call Grace and wish her ‘happy birthday’ one last time. But no one picked up the phone and went straight to voice message.

Sighing, Hazel left her a voice message saying, ”Hey Grace! Call me when you can.

Happy Birthday. Hope you’re enjoying your post-birthday sex with tall, dark and handsome.” She ended the message with a giggle and said ‘I love you.’

Then she threw the phone on her bed and laid. Not bothering to change her clothes or removing her makeup. She was way too tired to think about those.

Her head hit the pillow and it hardly took her a few seconds to fall asleep.
