Trent bent low behind the concrete wall he was hiding behind and he cursed loudly. His big body barely concealed from the gunfire. Two of his men were wounded. One in the leg, the other in his shooting arm, and his sniper had just been blown to pieces. The lieutenant was worried about his men and communications were down as of a few minutes ago. He prayed that the mayday went through after Carter was taken out. They needed cover and fast. The three POWs his team had managed to rescue wouldn’t last long out here as they were so weak from their torturous ordeal. A bullet whipped by his head and he ducked lower, looking over at Dixon, he shook his head.

“We’re fucked if we don’t get out of this hole.” Trent shouted in his deep voice and his sergeant nodded in agreement. Dixon was shooting with his left hand, having taken a round in his right bicep. His arm hung limp at his side and he fought to aim properly with his weaker limb.

“SatCom’s still down, sir. We’ve gotta do something, and fast.” Dixon shouted back. Bullets ricocheted off the concrete sending fragments hurling toward the team. “We’re getting low on ammo too. I’m down to my last clip.”

Suddenly there was the crack of a high powered rifle fired somewhere above them, then another. Trent stayed low, flattening his body against theconcrete and cautiously raised his shaved head over the top of the low wall he was hiding behind. Two of their enemy lay dead in the street. He heard the rip of the rifle again and another man fell into sight.

“Son of a bitch, looks like the call went through gentlemen! We’ve got a hell of a shot covering our asses right now.” Trent said in excitement. His comset crackled to life and he heard a voice giving him the coordinates for a pick up. There was another shot from above and they all heard a mortal scream as the bullet found its target. “Damn, that guy’s good!!” Trent laughed and rubbed the thick black goatee that hung down his chin.

“All right boys, let’s get out of here while we have cover. We’ve got ourselves a hike to get to the pickup.” Trent pulled his powerful legs under him in a crouch then peered over the wall again. Silence had descended over the street. He gave the signal to move out and he leaned over to grab Payton, who had been shot in the thigh. Payton’s femur was shattered and there was no way in hell the man would be able to get anywhere on his own. Trent bent down and threw his wounded man over his wide shoulder, laying him over his back and he gripped Payton’s uninjured leg around his thigh, while Payton clung to Trent’s other arm, leaving his gun hand open to shoot.

As they high tailed it to the pickup, another shot rang out. They heard the bullet zip over their ducked heads and take out an enemy hidden in a window just above them. The man fell dead to the ground as they ran by.Five minutes later they were out of the decrepit city limits and heard the drop ship’s engines whine as it came down for a quick extraction. Trent dropped Payton inside the sliding door of the ship and the man grunted in pain. “Easy, boss, that fuckin hurts!”

Trent shot him a smile then turned to cover the rest of the men as they loaded up. He made sure everyone was on board before he sat on the edge of the doorway and signaled the pilot to take them up. “Let’s get outta this shit hole!”

The pilot shook his head, over the comset he informed Trent that they had to go in hot to pick up the sniper. “We’ve got a bead on location and we have to get in fast before the shit gets really ugly in there.”

Trent’s eyes widened, “Uh, yeah, it’s already ugly in there, but yeah go get that sniper. He’s one hell ova shot and we don’t want to lose talent like that!”

The Ship took off and the lieutenant stayed in the open doorway to cover them as they headed back into the heart of the city. They hit the rooftops and Trent could see the flash of gun fire as they approached. There was a lone figure holed up on the corner of a building taking heavy shots from a half dozen others. The pilot came through Trent’s comset again. “There, on the edge, we’re going to need some covering fire to get down there.” Trent leaned over and grabbed the 50 cal. that was lying by Payton, “I need to borrow your baby, Payton.” He got on his belly for steadiness and as they approached the rooftop, he took careful aim and fired.

One man dropped and the sniper turned to see the ship hover close enough to jump to. Trent fired again, taking out another man then leaned down to grab hold of the soldier’s reaching hand. Shock took hold of him and completely froze him in place as he looked down into the beautiful blue eyes of a young woman. She had grasped his forearm and was straining to pull her body up into the ship as he lay there struck stupid. A bullet whizzed by her body and Trent snapped out of his paralysis. In one powerful jerk, he pulled her up into the ship and shouted for the pilot to get outta Dodge.

The girl landed hard on top of Trent and she scrambled frantically to get off of his massive body. She scurried away from him until her back hit the wall on the other side of the ship and she pulled her rifle up over her legs defensively. The lieutenant shook his head in disbelief then rose up to pull the door shut. He shifted over to Payton to check his leg wound then looked over at Dixon, who gave him a thumb up. Trent turned his attention back to the female sharpshooter. He’d never in his military career heard of a woman being given the title of sniper. Not to mention that fact that she was barely in her early twenties shocked him as well.

She was in full combat gear, black concealment makeup covered her face, bringing out the piercing blue of her eyes and she wore a black knit cap covering the top of her head. Her thick, dark hair was braided into one long length that, at the moment, fell over her shoulder and almost down to her waist. Trent was struck by the soft fullness of her lips as their rosy color stood out from the black makeup. She was built lean, but he couldn’t decipher the rest of her shape through the military issued clothing.A blade was strapped to her calf and another on her hip. On the other side of her, a Sig 45 automatic was holstered onto her belt. Her slender fingers gripped her sniper rifle as she stared back at him, and she looked ready to bolt when given the opportunity.

Trent tipped his head at her, in gratitude then turned his attention back to Payton’s leg. The soldier was in great pain and was in serious need of some morphine.

The pilot glided them out of the planet’s atmosphere and up to the battlecruiser hovering just out of orbit. As soon as they had docked inside the belly of the monstrous ship the girl stood up, slinging her rifle over her shoulder as she impatiently waited for the airlock to flash green. She was self-conscious and claustrophobic in the small space of the drop ship.

A docking attendant slid the craft’s door open and she leapt to the floor and headed out away from the group. Trent watched her go, completely enamored of her and he knew he had to find out more about her.

“Who the hell was that?” Dixon asked in amazement. “Fuck me! I didn’t even know we had a female sniper. Let alone one that looked like that!”

The lieutenant looked at Dixon and smiled, “That makes two of us, but I’ll be damned if I don’t find out who she is!”
