The love a character has for his author

Author's Note: This isn't a story or anything, just something I thought up. Enjoy <3

Dear Author

You seem to know me so well, and understand me better than anyone else, including the others you set up to play a part in my life.
You write me so effortlessly like I was a voice in your head that couldn’t leave you alone. You had to have me on paper because I could not stop nagging you. Even when you weren’t ready to write me, you still did it because you were as hungry to get me out into the world as I was to be in it. But being inside of your head was pretty fun too. You see, it’s not just you that knows my secrets and desires, but I’ve uncovered some of yours as well. Those you hide inside of that fascinating head of yours. It was only fair that I take an interest, considering you’ve taken one in me. Yes, living in your head is fun and adventurous, but I also like the way you write me on paper. You flesh me out so I’m not just a name or a cardboard cut-out. I am real because you care enough to make me real. You give me family, and friends. You give me flaws and goals. You give me conflict and growth. No need to give me a love interest. I have you. You’re more than enough because I know that no one you put by my side will measure up or care the way you do. I know this because ever since writing my first book, you have not been able to get enough of me. There are now five books about me and now you’re working on a sixth because I’m just that damn good.

We understand each other, you and me. I’m convinced that you have not put any time or effort in any other character but me and I’m warmed by that fact. You will never have to worry about writer’s block because I will never shut up inside of your brain. I will always entertain you. I will always have a new conflict ready for you in your head. You know how some writers say some books write themselves? That’s what all of your books do and it’s because of me. You love me the way I love you. I dare say you love me more than you love your husband.

I get a kick out of watching him stand over you as you sit at your computer desk writing about me because you’re so obsessed. He’d want your attention and you refuse to give it because you’re too busy being lost in me and you do not want to be found. I don’t want him to find you. I want you to stay lost in my head and never return to the harsh reality that’s the outside world. Admit it, you love being in my head like I love being in yours. Like we’re soulmates. I truly believe we are. Your husband is merely a side character in our story. In fact, my dear author, you should get rid of him so that never again do you have to be torn from the computer to give him any of the sad pathetic attention that he craves. I like your focus on me and only on me. Don’t stop writing me. Because I’ll never leave your head. Even long after you’re done with me, I’ll always be a voice inside of your head. You cannot escape me. I’m as attached and addicted to you as you are about writing me. Even as your fans told you that I needed no more books, you’ve continued. Night after night with cups of coffee and energy drinks by your side as you stay up wide-eyed staring at the computer-unable to help yourself. I’m all you care about and that is the way that I like it.

Wow, I loved this, People may think it's a bit obsessive and creepy but I totally understand what you were saying. I've read how some writers actually feel about the characters they create and can't get away from them when they've finished their story.
I love the characters I create, they are all my babies and it's true they do consume your thoughts even after you've finished the story there's always something that will remind you about them. There's one book I wrote about a pole dancer, and every time I hear the music I chose for the book I automatically think of her. It's like I can't get away from her, she haunts me lol :)

Thank you so much for reading this, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Our characters really are our babies and never stray far from our thoughts. We brought them into existence and they will always remain a part of us. Even if they haunt us, we love them for it

You've taken obsession to a whole other level that I'm not sure I've ever seen written before, its almost the caption of a good horror book, I envision the Stephen King type. I'm not a big fan of horror but I have enjoyed King because his brand of horror isn't just typical, it's unique and thought provoking in most cases. You have created thought provoking. "Character" is narcissistic and a tad bit controlling. He could actually be a real psychological problem. This even goes as far as to make me feel sorry for your poor husband, you might want to make him a sandwich and turn off your computer for the night. Keep in mind your character is in there all the time but he isn't physical. (I hope he's not listening!)

Great post, well written. I do get the idea and the story and it plays out well and it carries a lot of truth for most writers, our characters can consume our lives and distract us to great depths. And you never truly stop writing a story, even if you never put it down on paper you will day dream about your characters at random times and imagine how they are living their lives even after the story has reached the final ending. (That's not just me right?)

I like the story and if I can make one critique it would be that maybe his feelings could be expanded in some areas, it's written like a dictated letter with the thoughts on paper, add a few more descriptions as if your character were writing in a diary and not just a letter or make it more as a love letter, the character tells us how the author behaves but not how he feels. Tell us how he feels when she isn't focused on him...is he angry...we can see his jealous and selfish but I think you could make us feel it as well.

Awesome post. As I was looking for the story I realized how many others you have posted. I will have to check them out, I think I've only read a few or yours so far.

Girl, this is so creepy because it is true! In my mind, my characters are people chatting away in my head demanding attention and to be placed on a page. But...getting rid of the hubby? Yikes! That's tipped the scales over to the darkside! Resist the temptation! Come back to the light! Let that voice know who's in control. Ahem! This sounds like the Stephen King's the Dark Half in a way. Unsettling in how close to home it is, but great job in the delivery!

Lol I usually don't do creepy stories but this one just popped in my head for some reason. I'm so glad I delivered on the creep factor! XD And its so true these characters become so real in our head and you can't help but put pen to paper or type about them on your computer. Lol "Character" is a sneaky bastard, wanting her to get rid of her husband because he's jealous and wants her attention focused on writing him only. There's no telling if she was able to resist or not. But lets hope she did! lol And I've never heard of or read Dark Half. I swear, just when I think I know of all of his work, a book I haven't heard about comes up. I've read maybe six or seven of his books and if Dark Half is as creepy as the title, I'd like to check it out. Thank you for reading. Just like with Trixie, I'm honored to have you read this because I think you're an amazing writer.

Ice, this is so unique and interesting! For this website especially. I’m guilty of doing it myself, creating a man in a little fantasy world. There is truth in that it’s more fun in the author’s head than in real life sometimes. This is a really interesting perspective. It would be nice to expand on it.

Thank you! I'm actually happy you read this. This is the first thing I actually liked writing in about five years. I think just about all of us writing on here have someone inside of our heads that's just having a great ol' time in there lol. And my God, it's the truth that being inside of someone's head is much more fun. I'm thinking about expanding on it but I'm not sure. When I write something that's meant to be small and then later on try to expand on it, I overthink and overplan and then I just lose interest. So I really need to think about it. Once again, thanks for reading!

Well posed, it applies to every writer so much we should all cite it anthologically.
Thanks for putting it into words we can all appreciate.
