Pulling into the ambulance depot parking up in my spot. Letting my song finish on the radio turning the engine off on my car. Sliding out of my Porsche picking my bag up off the passenger seat, walking towards the staffroom and my office, clicking my car locked. Not even making it as far as my office, turning straight back around running to an ambulance climbing in, chucking my bag down in the footwell anwering the call.

"Late night last night was it boss?" I look to Jeff, giving him an unimpressed look as he smirks to me flicking the lights and sirens on speeding out of the ambulance bay. "I know that look anywhere don't forget." He winks, smirking looking either side of us, going through the lights speeding to the shout. Me and Jeff go way back, we've not seen each other for years but we've known each other since being kids. He's got these really intense blue eyes which he flutters at girls, they flock to him and fall at his feet. He can say what he wants and get away with a flutter of the eyes. It doesn't work on me though so he doesn't even bother. He's just a bit taller than me, he works out so he's bigger now than he used to be. He's always been a ladies man, at one point he was my man. He's a year older than me but he got held back at school so was in my year, we used to hang around in the same gang, which everyone finds amusing.

Running my hands down my face yawning, closing my eyes for a second or two reaching for the radio to answer it again. Hanging it back up onto the hook, looking up opening my eyes again tying my hair up into a messy bun.

Jeff slows down once we see the police cars and the other ambulance on scene. He finds a spot to park up. I jump out as he's just about to stop, walking over to the scene where everybody is stood. Jeff soon meets me up with the kit bag as I brief him on what we've got. We wait for the police to give us the call then go up to the flat.

Walking inside, the smell of Cannabis hits us as soon as we step in. I mumble something to Jeff as he laughs quietly, walking through to the living room with me. The officer looks to me and Jeff as we walk in. Stepping over the body on the floor, checking for a pulse before nodding to Jeff. Checking for a vein in between all the track marks on the persons arms, finding a decent one. Putting the tornequet on their arm before injecting. Me and Jeff count down as we get to one the patient comes round, fighting slightly with the police officer. Our other crew come up, handing it over to them. We walk out leaving it to them, walking back downstairs and to our ambulance.

I've only been at this station just under a week so I'm still new but I've been to an overdose every single day I've been here. Getting a bit tiring now and brings back a few memories. Climbing back in the ambulance, Jeff climbs in driving us back to the depot letting me sort myself out.

Joining everybody in the staffroom, sitting in my usual space at the counter eating some coco pops. I've adopted this as my seat already so somebody has marked it with my name much to the amusement of my own boss, who is known as Chief to everybody.

"God how chavvy could you two both get?" One of my team looks over to me, Jeff is sat next to them with his phone in his hand. He's obviously got the old photographs out for some reason for everybody. "Height of sophistication I see."

Jeff laughs nodding looking to me. "Aye we were weren't we? Happenin' we was fam." I do the wrist flick, clicking my fingers together, finishing my coco pops off as the team laugh. Washing my stuff up, sitting back down flicking through all of my boring work mail.

"…I know I'm so lucky to know Comfort for so long I am."

Glancing up, raising my eyebrows, mouthing "I'm not." meaning about Jeff. He looks to me sticking his finger up at me, I grin, sliding off my stool to go to my office to stick some of the letters up.

Walking back into the staffroom for lunch time, sitting down in my usual spot pulling my pasta salad out. The crew are all talking about something to do with the police. I've no idea what they're talking about and I possibly don't care where it concerns the police. Raising an eyebrow when I hear my name being brought up in conversation, my eyes staying focused on my iPhone screen.

Finally paying attention to what's being said as Jeff speaks, he leans back in his chair his feet up on the coffee table. "Comfort with a cop? I don't think so."

"Are we trying to pair me up again with some person." I walk over, sitting down on Jeff's lap looking to everybody.

"Yeah, there's a new sarg started at the local cop shop. Apparently she's quite a looker but bats your way." Jeff looks to me smirking. " She's quite up herself apparently. She's been down here a while but been stationed at the other station other side of town.  If it's who I think it is I've met her when I worked over that side for a couple of months." Jeff looks up to me, wriggling a bit to get comfy his arms on the arms of the chair. "And if it is her, she likes bad girls. She also likes climbing ranks so you and her will get on fantastically."

"Think Comfort would be too much Jeff." The crew start laughing looking over to Chief who walks in. Everyone says hello to him as we all make room for him to sit down. "I don't know her as well as you of course Jeff, but I've met the officer in question. She has a habit of being a bit of player I've heard.  If she could handle Comfort there's hope for us lot yet." I bow a little a little smug smile on my face, leaning back on Jeff. "Actually, I wanted to speak to you all about her. Josh is bringing her down here to meet us all been as she'll be on the same shift has most of us here. Don't know when he's bringing her but he's gonna let me know make sure everybody is here. So no skiving any of you, including you Comfort."

"Me, skive meeting a cop? Nah…" I pull a face rolling my eyes, Jeff laughs as he plaits my hair. Chief laughs a little standing up, saying goodbye then leaving to go to his meeting. Like I want to be meeting all the police officers. I don't particularly care and probably never will do either.

A week goes by and I've managed to avoid meeting any new police officers. By the sounds of the shout me and Jeff are attending though I'll probably meet some or her at least. Pulling up at the warehouse where the shout is, it's swarming with armed police, a negotiator is speaking through a megaphone as we walk over. This has been going on for over an hour apparently, I've no idea why we've been called probably just to be on the safe side.

Another thirty minutes go by and nothing changes. Rolling my eyes, kissing my teeth slightly, walking off, finding a way into the warehouse myself. Turning my radio down, texting Jeff to tell him to tell the cops not to do anything a minute. Making sure I'm hidden, I make some noise watching the thugs move, meaning they're now in sight of the police and the armed police. Coming out from my hiding place, walking down walking over.

Walking past a wounded friend by the looks of it he looks up to me with pleading eyes. I give him a signal to wait before whistling. I then notice a police officer uniform, now I know what the fuss is about.

"Another cop grab her lads."

Raising an eyebrow walking a bit further. "Do I look like a cop bruh?" I turn around. "Think you'll find I'm a paramedic my friend. She's got a cop uniform on not me. I'd never be one of them, cops are scum I agree with you yeah?" He looks to me, slowly putting his gun down still standing beside the officer. "But however much I despise them I'd never hurt one. They are still human and still have families. To be honest I wouldn't wanna do all that time either, d'you get me?"

He looks to me nodding a little. "Why should I listen to you? You might be undercover or sumfin'."

"What do you want me to strip?" I raise my eyebrows, he fidgets a bit shaking his head. "Trust me mate, I've got a rap sheet longer than your age most likely. Not summin' I'm proud of I was in quite a high profile gang at one point, drug dealing, drug running, beating people up, collecting drugs debts… You name it I've done that shit. One thing that we never did though… was hurt the feds. Gets you into more trouble mate." The officer sits there looking to me, his hands tied up behind the chair and to the chair. "Do you know what the greatest come back is?" He shakes his head. "Most of 'em are as bent as me and you are my friend. Probably go and see prostitutes and all sorts. Snorting some Cocaine after the shifts…" Walking around him slowly before kicking him in the back of his legs. He goes flying chucking the gun. I grab it holding it to his little friends aiming there's at me.

"Now who's big. You ain't the real shit at all. When I did this, we had no weapons. Our weapons were our hands, our fists, our feet. Our bodies. I only left this gang the other year and all so I still got that shit, it never leaves ya. Now unless you wanna be shot by real guns, give yourselves up." I look to them, my foot on his head softly but hard enough so he won't move. His friends all look to me then put their guns on the floor walking out to everybody outside. I hold the gun down, pulling him up walking him out holding the gun up at the same time placing it down on the floor.

I get cleared, walking over to Jeff as we go and get the other lad that's been injured inside. We scoop and go not looking to what's happening now. When we get into the hospital and drop the lad off everyone is talking about it as it's all over the news. I walk off just smiling to people that mention it. Doesn't bother me in the slightest, I wonder when the lads even realised who I was.

Sitting down in my office to get on with the paperwork putting some music on to keep me amused. It wasn't long ago that I was doing all of that, neither was it Jeff although he left it a lot longer than I did. Looking to the only photo on my desk, of me, my daughter and her father, who was also my husband he was the only reason I still did it all. Looking to the time, it's about time I go home. Finishing off the rest of my paperwork, leaving the rest for tomorrow. Getting home feeding myself and my daughter she whinges about school as usual. I make her go and do her homework whilst I go for my shower and settle down in bed.
