Mask Of Angels
written by Gary John R
Mask of angels
the secrets they keep
depends who you follow
we all have needs
the games we play
it turns me on
let me have my way
I need love
Mask of angels
the theatre of sin
welcome to club desire
there's a devil within
my heart beats so fast
I am not ashamed
I will do as you ask
there is no one to blame
Mask of angels
the city of dreams
when the night comes alive
you won't believe what you see
open your mind
are you lost in a moment
let me cover your eyes
poetry in motion
Mask of angels
I like to pretend
there can be no shame
I don't want this to end
my heart as been touched
am I in to deep
the demon inside me
won't allow this angel to weep
we could wait for the rain
dance close to the moon
I am so glad I came
I will be back soon
you have opened my eyes
my Goddess of love
there are tears to be cried
there is a heaven above

Lyrical again, Gary. Musical. "Wait for the rain" is interior assonance...like vowel sounds in the same line. You isolate ideas to lines, often with only 3 or 4 words - "Let me have my way" - "I need love"...another technique in song structure. I like how you write. Example of "off-rhyme" is "are you lost in a moment"...then, "poetry in motion". (moment and motion) This is assonance with the long 'O' sound, but clearly not exact rhyme. It's also alliteration with the 'm' sound. So the two work together to make the words sound almost exactly alike if you sing them, less so if you read them...but no less beautiful. Your refrain is "mask of angels", leading your stanzas this time (as opposed to ending them). You may not realize this, but you reiterate the 'm' sound quite a bit throughout the entire piece. That adds to the wholeness of the poem or song, gives it a musical appeal. It's referred to as 'consonance'...the repetition of consonant sounds.
As far as content, I love the subject matter. True angels, of course, would have no reason to wear a mask, would they? And that's your inference. I like how you include yourself as an angel. There's a slight suggestion of role play, but this is much deeper. It has to do with inner conflict, guilt and desire, letting go. It has to do with innocence lost (you have opened my eyes) and a hesitant thankfulness to see something perhaps Heaven did not intend to be seen. It has to do with hiding from ourselves and each other the things that really drive our emotional energies. It's actually a very deep piece....
