My name is Alexis Harper and I was a fugitive, trying to escape my fate. It was the time of the vampires. The world had changed drastically about thirty years ago. That’s when the vampires exposed themselves to us unsuspecting humans and enslaved the whole race. The more homely looking humans became food or slaves to do their vampire masters bidding. If you were lucky and looked good enough you were allowed to become a breeder. The men held "normal" jobs in cities that were enforced by vampires and the women stayed home and raised child after child (a minimum of seven children must be born to each family). The beautiful children were sold or enrolled into the breeding program at the age of twenty and the unlucky children were never heard from again. If you reached the age of fifty it was said that you were able to retire somewhere south. However don't believe everything that you hear. Children attended gender segregated schools, where we learned traditional studies and were kept up-to-date on popular trends. Our teachers wanted to make sure that we wouldn't embarrass ourselves when out in public with our masters. Those that were sold to kind vampires were allowed to write or call their families and rumors had it that life was tolerable for them. We even read stories in school about vampires and slaves falling in love. Ha, as if that would ever happen!

*****************************
I was born in nineteen eighty-nine to great parents, Kevin and Lydia Harper on the outskirts of a small town in Virginia. I had seven siblings: three older brothers, two older sisters and a younger brother. We had a very pleasant childhood, playing down by the creek behind our home. Spending the sultry summer days fishing and swimming, and having snowball fights during the bitter winter. I can still remember my mom baking chocolate chip cookies when we had finished throwing snowballs. The smell would waft through the whole house and had all of us crowding into the kitchen to wait impatiently on the cookies. While we waited, mama would serve each one of us a steaming cup of hot cocoa. On those days even daddy would forget his diet and gobble down as many moist chocolate chip cookies as he could. Of course we would always have to beg him to join us outside to work off the energy that the cookies and cocoa had given us. The times that we did persuade him to join us outside was magical. We would play tag and daddy would scoop me up, placing me on his shoulders. I was never afraid of falling off because I knew daddy would always protect me. I guess there are some things in this world that even our daddies can't protect us from.
The only days that were unpleasant were birthdays; on those days several well-dressed vampires visited the birthday child. The vampires would take picture after picture and write down long notes. We were always curious to know what was being written down and the nature of their visits. We soon found out when my oldest brother, Stryder, turned twenty. The same vampires, who had visited on past birthdays, arrived on his twentieth birthday and told the family that he had qualified for the breeder program. I remember crying as the vampires escorted him out to a waiting SUV, I knew I would never see him again. One by one my siblings were taken away until it was just me and my younger brother. A year or so before my twentieth birthday a lone vampire showed up at our front door. Dressed in an Armani suit, he informed my parents that I had already been sold as a companion. He proceeded to tell us that since my other siblings had been enrolled in the breeding program that he thought it would be better if I was given time to accept my fate. The only question that seemed to come to me was "Why just me?"  He looked me in the eyes and told me to check a mirror. That only the most beautiful get to be vampire companions. After that last remark he left with the knowledge that he had just shattered someone’s world. My mama looked at me with pity in her eyes day after day. Daddy would take to hugging me and telling me that he loved me. I knew that soon the vampires would be coming for me and that I planned on being long gone before that time came.
