I haven't had sex in over two years, and I seriously think I'm going to die if I don't get laid soon. This case I'm currently working isn't helping anything, either. A dear friend of mine recently asked me to check into her fiancee's sudden change of personality. She thinks he's cheating, but I haven't found any evidence of that so far. What I have discovered is that he's also being watched by an undercover cop. That leads me to believe that he's into something worse than cheating, but I don't want to say anything to my friend until I know for sure.

I'm nursing a cup of coffee in the Starbucks across the street from Daniel's office, and I can't stop my heart rate from spiking when the undercover cop walks in. He looks to be about 29, four years older than I am, and he's got a body women would kill for. His pitch-black hair is disheveled and longer than I usually find attractive, but it looks fantastic on him. He hasn't bothered to shave today, so his five o'clock shadow has him looking more like a criminal than a cop. I have to admit, even looking the way he does, I'd like to rip his clothes off and fuck him in front of God and everybody.

I gulp and stare down at the magazine on my table as he takes his coffee from the barista. Every muscle in my body winds up like a watch spring when I notice out of my peripheral vision that he's making a beeline for my table. I cross my legs tightly when he sits down and looks me dead in the eye. "Fancy seeing you here…again." His voice is the kind of raspy that can make any woman with nerves south of her neck get wet in an instant. "I'm guessing we're both keeping tabs on the same guy. Why?"

I drum my nails on the table as I debate whether or not I'm going to tell him, but his green eyes are too mesmerizing for me to keep my mouth shut. "He's my best friend's fiancee, and he's been acting strangely lately. She thinks he may be cheating on her, so she asked me to look into it."

"Private detective?"

"Yeah."

He smirks for a moment, and I narrow my eyes at him. "What's that smirk about?"

"Nothing important, kitten."

"Excuse me?"

"Surely someone's told you that your eyes are as green as a cat's."

"Yeah, but that doesn't mean it's appropriate for you, a man I've never met before in my life, to just call me 'kitten' right off the bat. My name is Alice."

"Fallen down any rabbit holes lately?"

My lips twitch as I force myself not to smile. "Wow, you're literate. I'm impressed."

His knee brushes mine as he leans forward and puts his forearms on the table. "There's no need to be hostile, Alice. Methinks the lady doth protest too much…you like it when I call you kitten."

The throbbing between my legs agrees with him, but that's not something I'm willing to admit. He takes my hand and I instantly try to pull away, but his grip tightens.

"What the hell are you doing?" I hiss.

"It seems that Mr. Graves has spotted us and is coming in to pay you a visit. The most logical course of action is to pretend that we're seeing each other, so we won't raise his suspicions any more than we already have."

"Fine." I relax my hand and try to conceal my squirming as he strokes his thumb over the palm of my hand.

He smirks and brushes his leg against mine again. I can't stop myself from blushing and he chuckles. "I think we have a lot to talk about when this is over."

"Yeah, right."

"Game on, kitten, time to pretend you have a single sweet bone in your body."

"Alice?" I look up and put on my best surprised face as Daniel stares down at me with a furrowed brow.

"Oh, hi Daniel. How's it going?"

"Fine." His cold gray eyes flick to the cop for a moment. "Who's your friend?"

I freeze, but the cop takes over with a smile. "I'm Jake. Alice and I recently started seeing each other." He extended his hand, and after a moment's hesitation Daniel shook it.

"Wow, Ally, I had no idea you were finally dating again." I shot him a tight smile and Jake squeezed my hand.

"I guess I just finally met the right guy."

"You still coming over to Jen's for dinner?"

I nod. "Absolutely."

"Great. Why don't you bring Jake with you? I'm sure Jen'd be delighted to meet him."

"I don't know," I bite my bottom lip and look over at Jake. "Don't you have to work tonight, honey?"

"No, that's tomorrow night, dear. I'd love to finally meet Jen."

I nodded at Dan. "See you later, then."

He seemed a little taken aback at the dismissive gesture, but he didn't argue. Jake chuckled as Daniel walked off.

"Well, you certainly have a way with people, kitten."

"What else did you want me to do?"

"Nothing. I was just making an observation."

"Okay, you're not coming to dinner with me tonight. You got called out to work or something, okay?"

His jaw hardened and he shook his head. "What part of 'we don't need to raise his suspicions' did you miss? If I don't show, that guy is definitely going to make something of it. I get the feeling he doesn't like you very much."

"Yeah, I'm not his biggest fan, either. I've never thought he was good enough for Jen." I wrinkled my nose as I watched him disappear back into his building. I tried to pull my hand away again, but Jake shook his head.

"How long has it been?"

"I don't know what you mean." I stared down at my newspaper and he stroked my leg with his.

"Yes, you do."

"It's none of your damn business."
