~Chapter 1

Kristian rode his horse hurriedly to the front of his army of soldiers. He wanted to know what all the commotion was about.
As he got to the front of the crowd, he spotted the back of a small figure, dressed in a long robe and shouting out at his men, asking them to stay away. At the lone figure’s side was the largest black dog he had ever seen. It was almost half the height of an average sized man, and it was growling angrily at the soldiers warning them to stay away, as it protected its master.
‘What is the meaning of this?’ Kristian shouted out, annoyed at the distraction to the journey at hand.
The lone figure turned around at the sound of his voice.
Kristian was speechless. It was a woman, and a beautiful woman at that! Her long red hair spilled out through her hooded robe; her brilliant deep green eyes were animated with both anger and nervousness. She waved a small dagger in his direction, letting him know she was ready to attack if there were any sudden moves.
‘Call your men off now!’ she said to him. Her dog was bent down on his hind legs, ready to pounce.
‘Men, fall back,’ Kristian ordered. ‘Give the lady some space.’
‘My Lord, we spotted this woman by the stream in front of us. We wanted to capture her and bring her to you as a gift, but before we could get a chance to get our hands on her, this beast jumped out from nowhere. It took two of the men savagely down, so we wanted to kill the monster. We wanted to avenge our honour.’
‘Avenge your honour?’ the woman laughed bitterly. ‘What do any of you know about honour? You wanted to lay your hands on me for your own evil ends, and then you tried to kill my dog. Well, try to touch me, if you dare. Don’t say you weren’t warned, but if you do lay a finger on me, it will be you who regrets it, not I,’ she said, with much confidence.
‘My lady, my men did not mean to scare you. Why don’t you relax your beast so we can resolve this misunderstanding?’
She looked at him suspiciously, her eyes gazing quickly at the crowd of men now surrounding her. She relaxed, bending down to pat her dog’s head and whisper some words into its ear that stopped it from growling further, but it stilled remained alert.
‘Thank you, my lady.’
She nodded at this appreciation.
‘What is a lone woman doing out here by herself in unguarded territory? It’s very dangerous, with worse things than my men out here!’
‘That’s my business, not yours,’ she snapped. ‘And I am not unguarded. I have Ryan.’ She looked at her dog. ‘Not to mention that I am well equipped to look after myself.’
Kristian looked down at the dagger that she still held in her hands tightly. He thought she must be foolish if she thought that would be able to deter a determined group of men who wanted to do mischief. But he was glad that he was made aware of her presence early on. Her instinct had been true when she had spoken about the men wanting her for their own evil gains. A lot of his army of men were trustworthy and decent, and had undergone years of training by his own hands, but recently he’d had to recruit some new blood to boost up his army numbers. Unfortunately, not all of these men had joined his army with a strong moral code, and they might have harmed or harassed her in some way if they’d had the opportunity and could get away with it.
His men had fought in battle after battle for some time now, and it had been a long while since they’d had any female contact, let alone set eyes on a beauty like this woman before him; she was a temptation for all. Even now, he could see the lustful looks pointed in her direction. He would need to ensure she was protected and guarded at all times, as long as they journeyed down the same path. ‘Would you give me the honour of telling me your name?’ he asked.
‘Sonia,’ she said reluctantly.
‘Sonia, can I have the honour of escorting you to your destination, if it is not too out of our way that is? Where are you heading to?’
‘In what direction is your army heading?’ She sidestepped his questioning with a question of her own.
‘We are heading North.’
‘In that case, then yes, we will follow you North, for a while any way.’
‘Sonia, do you not want to know whom you are travelling with?’ Kristian was bemused by her lack of interest in his troops as well as in himself.
‘You’re the Black Devil, I am presuming, from the way your men and you are dressed. It matches the stories I have heard about you.’
Kristian was surprised that she did not fear him, being aware of his identity. Perhaps his reputation was diminishing or the folk around this new land he now travelled in had not heard the stories of his past conquests and reputation.
Kristian was the third son of a King in the lands of the South. As a third son, he did not have any claims to the crown or any of the grander estates that would go to his two older brothers. So rather than sit down on his backside comfortably, getting fat from inactivity, while his older brothers plotted to get rid of him as a potential threat to their wealth and future crown when their father died, Kristian decided to find his own path in life, taking his destiny into his own hands.
He got together an army of men as eager as himself to explore the world and gain riches along the way, so that when the time came he would be able to build his own kingdom. But until that time, he’d had to become a mercenary, lending his brute force and that of his men to any King or Lord who could afford them. But he was costly, a fact that he was very proud of. His army was highly skilled and his soldiers had earned a reputation for being savage killers. Any side they joined in fighting had always been successful. They brought fear into the eyes of the enemy, who watched as he and his men would ride out to battle, dressed all in black with silver helmets, ready for the kill.
With time now passing into years, Kristian had become wary. He had succeeded beyond his own expectations in acquiring wealth and lands in several areas across the world where he had travelled. All were accumulated from the spoils of war, being gifts and payments for his great services in battle.
But now his heart had grown too heavy. He longed to stop the continuous fighting; he was no longer interested in the glory of honour or death, as he had first been when he was a much younger, less experienced man, desperate to achieve fame and fortune in his own right. Now, at long last, he was ready to settle down and find a home, perhaps even find a wife and beget children, to keep his direct bloodline alive and the memory of him passed down through the ages.
Looking at Sonia made these feelings intensify and come to the surface for him; it had been a while since he had held a woman’s hot naked body in his arms. And to lie with a woman the calibre of Sonia would be a great thing indeed. He had never seen such a beauty in all of his travels across the globe. He was determined to woo her later that day, when they camped for the night. He was sure she would be wise and understand the benefit of their union. Most women usually did with him—well, those who weren’t too scared to lie with the black devil himself and risk going to hell! But she didn’t seem afraid him; he could not see any fear in her eyes. He was definitely hopeful. And how would she refuse him, when he would make her an offer she would not be able to refuse?
‘I am known as the Black Devil by some,’ he said, ‘but my name is Kristian. I would prefer you to address me as such, Sonia.’
‘Kristian,’ she repeated.
He liked the way she pronounced his name, with her light, feminine voice. He really was becoming desperate to bed her!
‘Ok, Kristian is then what I will call you; I prefer that to the Black Devil. Kristian, I would like to thank you for sending your men away and allowing Ryan and myself to follow you for part of the way to the North.’
Kristian had not expected any gratitude from her. She was certainly a lot calmer than when he had first found her, set on getting into a fight with his men. But now he thought to use her more pleasant mood to his own advantage. ‘It is a pleasure, my lady, but all I ask is for you to do me the honour of dining with me in my tent for the evening meal.’
She looked up at him with raised eyebrows. ‘Is that really necessary? Sorry, I do not mean to be rude, but I am sure you have probably better things to do—like work on your next battle strategy—than spend your time trying to entertain me.’
Kristian hand not expected her response: What did she know about battle strategy? And he could not think of anything better at this moment than trying and then succeeding to get a very desirable woman into his bed—but, of course, he could not tell her the full truth.
‘Sonia, I would be honoured to get some good company at dinner for once. As you can see, my men are not the best conversationalists. They have their strong points but that is not one of them.’
‘I guess you’re right on that one.’ Sonia brought out her first smile for him; it almost distracted Kristian completely from his train of thinking.
‘And it will also keep you out of harm’s way from my men, if they see you with me and know you have my direct protection while you travel with us, for however long that may be. They will be more inclined to leave you alone.’
‘Yes, I can see what you mean.’ She no longer had the smile on her face. ‘I do not want any more trouble, not today anyway. Ryan is already unsettled as it is. In that case, I will take you up on your kind offer to dine with you later on.’
***
Sonia entered Kristian’s tent with hesitation. Ryan pulled at her robe with his teeth.
‘Don’t worry, Ryan, I will be fine alone with Kristian. You know there is nothing he can really do to me. Don’t be worried. You wait here.’
Her dog looked up at her unconvinced.
‘Ryan, no need to worry about your mistress, she is in good hands,’ Kristian said, while sitting down at the makeshift table and chair. He walked over to give Ryan a meat treat, which the dog immediately accepted; Ryan grabbed the food from Kristian’s hand and ate it in one gulp! Kristian, without giving it much thought, patted Ryan on the head.
Sonia was almost going to shout to him not to make direct contact with her dog, fearing that Ryan might bite him, as the dog was not great with new people. To her surprise, Ryan remained calm, even inviting more of Kristian’s attention. Sonia became immediately annoyed; she didn’t want Ryan to worry about her, but at the same time she didn’t want her dog to befriend Kristian. He was a stranger with a dark reputation. She didn’t want either of them to let their guard down!
‘Go and wait outside.’ She spoke harshly, not forgiving Ryan for being such a soft touch towards Kristian.
‘What a wonderful beast you have there.’
‘Oh, Ryan? Yes, he is wonderful; he is a good companion. Did you know he has ripped many a man apart? You would never guess from his calm exterior,’ Sonia lied openly.
‘Really? No, I would never have guessed. Please sit down, Sonia. Have something to eat and drink.’
‘Thank you.’ Sonia accepted the seat he had drawn out for her. She wasn’t sure why, but she felt very nervous in his presence—perhaps it was the fact that she had never ever met someone like him before. Although she was aware of his reputation as a barbarian, she had not expected such an attractive man. He was very tall and strong of body, with shoulder length jet black hair. His eyes were big and as dark as the black clothes he wore with pride. So big and dark that she could almost get lost in his eyes if she stared long enough, she could not help but think to herself. She understood why he would be called the Black Devil due to his mesmerizing eyes, and not because of the ridiculous tales of him having three heads and eating little children for breakfast, as mothers told their children where she came from to make their little ones behave.
‘So, where are you from, Sonia? Why are you here traveling with Ryan and just yourself?’
Sonia had wondered when Kristian would cut to the chase, after they had exchanged a number of conversation pleasantries back and forth. It was clear to see that Kristian was very curious about her. Even so, she could not divulge any information about herself and why she had left her land to journey far north. So she remained silent, eating the rest of the food laid out on her plate, until she could think of something to say.
‘I can see that you don’t want to give me any information about yourself,’ Kristian said, ‘but I want to help you.’
‘Help me? I never asked for your help, apart from me following you North part way for some time. After that, I will be fine by myself.’
‘But it might be of benefit for you to accept my help. It would be safer for you if you were under my protection. I would see that you come to no harm all the way to where you wish to go—and afterwards also.’
‘As I said before, I don’t need your help, but say, for the sake of argument, I was willing to take you up on your offer: What would you gain out of the arrangement? I cannot imagine you being the type of man to do anything without deriving some benefit.’
‘Well, the benefit would be mutual. You are a beautiful woman; I am sure you are aware of your own qualities. I am in need of some comfort after all these years of battle that has hardened me. It would be good to have a woman lie by my side in the short term, and later on, I could set you up in one of my estates. You would want for nothing as long as we both remain suited and if we enjoy each other.’
Sonia could not believe what she was hearing. ‘Having just met this morning, you now expect me to take up the role as your mistress? You have insulted me at your table! I am not a loose woman. And neither would I choose to make a deal with a mercenary, who chooses to draw his sword at the highest bid,’ she said with disgust.
‘You think my proposal distasteful, but I feel you have no sense. Everyone does what they need to do to survive—hence, my many battles, and yes they were done for mostly money, but if I had not been at these wars, men would have still fought and died. What difference does it make?’
‘Every difference, because you don’t always know that which you kill—the innocent men who are forced to fight due to the greed of their Lords who rule over them. They are innocent victims, in the wrong place at the wrong time,’ she sighed. ‘Anyway, even if your past did not shock and concern me greatly, it would still not be possible to do what you are asking.’
‘And why is that Sonia?’
‘I am cursed; no man can ever touch me.’
‘What foolish story are you telling me now to prevent any union between us?’
‘I speak the truth. I have been cursed since I was a little girl. Those who touch me or whom I touch will automatically fall into sleep and will wake several hours later. But if I am touched or I touch someone for a great length of time, then it can become even more serious: the person’s energy will grow weaker and death can occur. The only living thing that is not affected by me is Ryan!’ Sonia looked at Kristian without flinching, telling him the bitter truth of her curse.
‘I don’t believe it; such things are not possible, unless you’re a witch?’
‘No, I am not a witch, just cursed. But if you don’t believe me, why not try to touch me? If I am right, you will see that I get to my destination safely and you will ask no more questions and make no more proposals in regards to bedding me.’
‘And if I am right, and you’re wrong?’
‘Then I will give you what you want and lie with you after I reach my destination. So, what do you say, or are you too afraid to touch me now?’
‘Afraid? Why would I be afraid? From what you say, the worst thing that can happen to me from our wager is that I close my eyes and rest a little earlier than I had planned. But I am very doubtful that any of the things you say will happen!’
With that, he walked up to her, and without hesitation, he took her in his arms and bent down to kiss her.
Sonia closed her eyes, expecting the worst, but she did not hear Kristian drop to the ground. ‘I don’t understand, you should not be conscious right now,’ she said in disbelief.
‘Sonia, no need to play any more games with me. It is obvious you want me just as much as I want you. And your little story was just a way to protect your female modesty. You always meant to take me up on my proposal,’ Kristian spoke enthusiastically.
‘No, that’s not true! You should not be conscious!’
‘But I am, and I want to kiss your soft lips again.’ He took her in his arms a second time but this time around he deepened the kiss.
Sonia was knocked off guard; a part of her wanted to push him aside but the other part of her hungered for the human contact that she had always been denied. She started to feel a pleasurable sensation stirring from within her body. As she touched his tongue with her own, she heard Kristian groan his response as she tasted him. He tasted very much to her liking.
She felt his hand travel up her body; he massaged her thighs then her pert bottom. Sonia never imagined being touched could feel so good! To have at last some physical contact. Kristian then picked her up and lifted her so she sat on the table. He then separated her thighs, standing in between them as he bent her down slightly to kiss her neck downwards hungrily. He then pushed down her gown, exposing her nakedness from the waist up.
‘You are truly beautiful, more beautiful than I had imagined,’ he said, with a voice deepened by lust. He bent down to take her right nipple inside his mouth, sucking down on her breast greedily.
Sonia moaned in shock at the pleasure she was experiencing; she felt heat building up deep inside her. She gripped his head and hair to steady herself from the intense sensation. ‘No, Kristian, I will not be taken like this!’ she shouted, coming to her senses before it was too late. ‘We made a deal; you bed me after we reach my destination.’
Kristian withdrew from her side with disappointment. ‘Ok, have it your way. A deal is a deal. After we reach your destination, I will have you as agreed. So, rest now while you still can. I will get one of my trusted men to escort you to the tent next to me, where you will be safe. I will see you in the morning.’
Sonia left, feeling both nervous and confused. Kristian had brought feelings and sensations she did not even know that she was capable of experiencing. But why now had this happened, after all this time, when she needed to concentrate all her energy on the real problem at hand?!
