Our Man In Berlin Chapter 1 - We Travel To Berlin To Negotiate Our Agent's Release

It was nearly 8am when I was stirred by the sound of my alarm clock going off, I had just awoken from a terrifying dream.

Needless to say in this dream I was a pilot in a spitfire plane which was being targeted by a Messerschmitt German plane,it pounced on it's prey like a giant panther hunting a gazelle.

The sound of my alarm had coincided with the sirens which of course were the fire engines making their way to the disaster scene.

Any way this was only a dream and my day had just begun,I quickly made myself a cup of  "Lofbergs" which I am reliably informed is Sweden's number one best selling coffee.

After taking a shower and putting some clean clothes on I made my way to the front door where I was surprisingly greeted by the postman.

"You're up early this morning mate",he exclaimed as he looked at me and gave me my mail  before walking off.

A few seconds later I heard the sound of a car horn it was Michael, he had come to pick me up and take me to our office,Michael like myself worked in the home office for MI5.

Few if any words were spoken between us en route as we never talked about work due to the secrecy act and neither of us had any close family to discuss those sensitive topics.

"How's Aline these days"? I asked Michael, he just shrugged his shoulders ,"ok I guess from what I see of her",he replied.

We soon approached "Marble arch" and entered "Trafalgar square" via "Mayfair", our office was just off "Oxford street".

"So here we are Mike, another day another dollar I guess, what's on the agenda for today?, any meetings?",I enquired.

He ignored my question and remained his usual silent self before following on behind me as we entered the building.

"Good morning chaps" exclaimed Mr. Green our superior in command"and a splendid one it is too" I replied.

We were then briefed about today's agenda and our main meetings which would prove interesting though Mr.Green wouldn't go in to too much detail, suffice to say that both of us would have to brush up on our German.

Coffee was taken at 11am and a short while afterwards we got to the business end of the day which was our meeting.

"Right Gentlemen I won't beat around the bush and get to the point of why we are here this morning.

One of our agents has been lifted last night in Potsdamer Berlin and we want him back",he said.

He continued to explain the urgency attached to regaining our kidnapped agent, knowing classified information in the wrong hands could seriously damage both ourselves and the cold war alliance.

It was 1958 and Germany had been divided up by the alliance forces and the Soviets,Berlin was indeed the most sensitive city in western Europe being the crossroads to the iron curtain.

Our mission was to fly to East Germany and find out what we could do to find out about the whereabouts of our agent prior to his disappearance.

Our instructions were to make contact with a chap called Housemartin who would act as a third party agent mediator.

Our flight was booked for 7pm from "Heathrow airport" flying to "Tempelhof airport", we would stay at the "GRAND HYATT HOTEL" in "Potsdamer Platz".

After a second meeting with Mr.Green we made our way from the office to the airport via taxi.

There wasn't much time to grab any clothes or valuable essentials not to mention say our goodbyes to our friends and work colleagues.

The journey from work to the airport went without any serious delays and we were now awaiting check in though neither one of us had any baggage.

An announcement was made that flight B1274 was ready for boarding and would all passengers please make their way to gate 5.

I quickly lit a cigarette and began puffing away quickly knowing it was a good 5 minutes from one side of the airport lounge to our boarding area.

"Must you smoke?, you know how much I detest it so",Mike complained,"sorry it's a filthy habit

but at least I am not an alcoholic" I grinned.

"Are you insinuating that I drink too much Mike?",he replied,I continued to smile at him as we checked in and boarded the aircraft amongst a sprinkling of other passengers.

Soon we were sat down and awaiting the sound of the plane's engine,we would not have to wait too long as the aircraft took to the skies and our assignment had really begun in earnest.

The skies were full of fluffy clouds and we could just make out a few famous London landmarks such as "The Houses of Parliament" and "Tower Bridge".

A steward soon brought us complimentary refreshments and a spot of lunch although the flight was just over an hour between destinations.

At last We landed at "Tempelhof airport" as we disembarked and made our way to customs and passport control.

When we passed through the declaration zone, we were asked if we had anything to declare and then made our way by taxi from the airport to our hotel for the night.

"I don't know about you Mike but I could eat a scabby horse, that so called meal on board the flight wasn't enough to feed a dog",I said.

He smiled and we agreed to visit a local restaurant after we had checked in at the local hotel.

The prices in the hotels could be a tad expensive even though one could put the bill on our expenses account.

The hotel itself was as it sounded by name rather grand and after careful consideration and inspecting the menu and prices we decided to eat out.

I had asked the bellboy at the hotel if he could recommend a good restaurant nearby and he told me "Borchardt" was the one most frequented by Berliners, it was only a few minutes walk from our hotel on "Franzosiche strasse".

We quickly made our way to the restaurant  and ordered our drinks,we decided to order a bottle of Niersteines gutdomtal which was an excellent white wine from Rudesheim.

"Herr Ober" I exclaimed "can we order some food please?".I ordered some sylt oysters with Wiener schnitzel followed by a hot potato salad.

Mike ordered the oysters but had Borchardt which was a charming German evening supper which the restaurant was named after.

This was considered a good choice by most Berliners after watching an opera performance by Goethe.

I finished off my meal with Mascarpone mousse with lavender scented honey and brandy and then made my way to bed,as it would be an exciting and eventful day which awaited us tomorrow.

The bedroom was delightful and charming, there was a bouquet of flowers and a basket filled with fruit with the odd chocolate bar on top of the table nearest to the door.

One was also treated to an en-suite bathroom which was almost unheard of in Eastern Europe.

I slept beautifully that night until I was awoken by a knock at my door, I quickly put my dressing gown on and greeted Mike who was stood on the other side of my door.

He was pointing to his watch and had informed me that we were not on holiday and had work to do.

He also stated that he had gone for a walk earlier and had already eaten at the buffet breakfast.

I noticed that Mike was smiling which was unusual for him,"what are you looking so happy about?" I asked.

He replied "I got a few extras from the chambermaid",he said amusingly.

"Oh I see well at least you won't have to buy any fragrances from the airport duty free shop",I exclaimed.

"No you don't understand I scored",he replied, what would Aline think of that?"I enquired.

He just shrugged his shoulders,"score I didn't think you were capable of hitting a barn gate who were you entertaining the blind school?" I chuckled.

I made my way to the reception and asked the clerk if there were any letters or messages for us.

There was one letter addressed to us both, we were to meet with Housemartin at a local library just a few minutes walk from the hotel.

"What do you make of that Mike?", I exclaimed, "they know we are here already I suppose we ought to get on with the case.

Let's see it's half past nine and the meeting is at 11 am that doesn't give us much time I said".

I quickly grabbed some breakfast, had a shave and met up with Mike in the hotel foyer, I needed to relate confidential information with Mr.Green to keep him up to speed.

"Hello Mr.Green Housemartin has made contact with us and are on our way to meeting him now, nothing more to report, will phone you later if there are any developments.

We approached the library and I took out a picture which Mr.Green had given us to identify the agent whom we would be meeting.

We decided to wait in the reference library which was nearest to the exist to see him approaching the building.

It was now 11 am and we split up and made ourselves as inconspicuous as possible.

"Here he comes", I exclaimed, our man was just a few feet away from us now.

"Hello you must be Housemartin", I exclaimed, the man looked at me then pointed to an area of the library.

We followed him upstairs and sat down at a nearby table,he passed me a piece of paper and then spoke.

"Right gentlemen I will only say this once if you want to do business with me it will cost your government £500,000,call me on this number when you have made your decision",he said.

I looked at Mike in a state of shock and said,"look here our missing agent is very important to our government and we want him back but the home office will not be held to ransom over this matter.

The man shrugged his shoulders then made his way out of the library,"should we follow him?" I exclaimed to Mike.

"No let him go we will try this telephone number he has provided us with and then brief Mr.Green",I replied.

We made our way to a telephone kiosk and placed a 5 D-M coin in to the slot and made the call, the phone number provided was unobtainable and obviously a bogus one.

I phoned the operator but she said the line was discontinued, we had reached a full stop and now I had to contact Mr.Green to confirm our details of the meeting and the bogus call.

"Hello Mr.Green I'm sorry to report that we did meet Housemartin but he's lead us up on a wild goose chase.

His representatives expect our government to cough up £500,000 can we trust him what should we do next?",I enquired.

The conversation went quiet then he spoke,"right gentlemen we won't play ball with them as this is extortion.

At least they know where you are, stick tight and let them contact you and report to me again in a few days I expect they will lie low for a while",he replied.

We both decided to head for a local keiper or wirthaus to discuss what we would do for the rest of the day and to ponder our next move in this tense saga.

After leaving the old wirthaus we headed for the luxury of our hotel and drank quite a few beers before we decided to go to bed.

It had been an eventful day and we had not achieved our objective in returning our agent.
