Abbey stood outside the ivy covered manor house, she was in awe of it, she had never seen a house so beautiful before, the gardens were just as beautiful, surrounded by neatly trimmed bushes with borders of so many different flowers. Looking behind her she could see in the distance the old black taxi driving away that had just dropped her off at the house. Never had she left the safety of her village before, she felt homesick and lonely already.
Working at the Forrester’s manor house was Abbey’s only option for work, according to her guardian, because she didn’t have any sort of qualifications, she had spent her life from a very young age working on her family’s farm and had never been to school, her parents had home schooled her.
Abbey was nineteen when her parents died in a house fire, she was then taken in by a family friend, Joan. For the next two years, she found it hard trying to adjust to life outside the farm and Joan was now tired of her, she moaned that Abbey was too backward to get a decent job to earn enough money to pay for her keep and now wanted to get rid of her.
Joan couldn’t believe her luck when one of her friends told her that she had seen an advert for a job at the Forrester’s house, they were looking for a new live in maid. Joan immediately rang the Forrester house and spoke to Maxwell Forrester and explained Abbey’s circumstances that she needed a live in job, she may not have any sort of qualification but she knew how to work hard, Abbey was offered the position straight away with no interview.
Not really knowing what to do next, Abbey walked towards the front door along the gravel path, the crunching sound of the small stones echoed through her head with every step she took, she had never felt so nervous in her life. Abbey was just about to knock on the front door when two dog’s ran behind her, barking. Jumping back in fright against the door, the dogs snarled at her, she was terrified.
A dark haired man, about forty years old casually walked towards the dogs, put a leash on them and shouted at them to sit, then stared at her, “who are you and what are you doing here?” he asked in a deep husky voice, Abbey didn’t know what she was more scared of, the man or the dogs.
“I’m Abbey Richards the new live in maid.”
The man raised his eyebrows, “oh so your Abbey,” he looked at her with amusement.
Abbey nodded her head and nervously licked her lips, her heart began to race as he walked towards her, she couldn’t help but notice how attractive he was and he had the bluest eyes she had ever seen. Abbey shuddered as she looked up at him, his tall strong body towered over her as he leaned over her resting his hand against the door, his face was close to hers, she could smell alcohol on his breath, “servants use the back entrance.”
Abbey swallowed nervously, “where is the back entrance?”
The man looked even more amused, “do you want me to show you the back entrance?”
Abbey nodded, the man laughed then walked away from her and pointed to the side of the house, “go to the end and turn left, follow the path around and you will find it.”
Abbey picked her small suitcase up and walked away from the man, just as she was about to turn to the side of the house she turned to look behind her, the man was still by the front door staring at her. Abbey took a deep breath and puffed her cheeks, that man may be good looking but she couldn’t help but think how scary he was too.
Abbey found her way to the back entrance and was greeted by an old chubby rosy cheeked woman, the woman reminded her so much of her mother. The woman’s name was Hilary, she was the cook and housekeeper, she told Abbey that apart from her that she was the only other servant in the house and her husband was the gardener.
“Do you have you any questions?” Hilary asked Abbey as she passed her a drink.
Abbey sat down at the table, “do you and your husband live in this house?”
“Oh no dear, we live in a small cottage just across the grounds.”
“Will I live there with you?”
Hilary chuckled, “no, you will live in the house because if the master calls for you in the night for help, you have to go to him straight away to see what he wants.”
Abbey stood up and gazed out of the window, she could just see the roof of the cottage Hilary lived in, “if there’s only you, me and your husband that works here, who was the man with dark hair I met earlier on, he had two dogs with him?”
“That’s the master of the house Maxwell Forrester, you must call him sir at all times.”
Abbey felt panic run through her body, “Hilary, I don’t like him, he’s a bit scary.”
Hilary flared her eyes in shock then looked towards the kitchen door into the corridor, “shush, don’t say things like that, he could be around.”
“What would he do if he heard me say that?”
“Well he would sack you straight away and you don’t want that do you?”
Abbey sat back down at the table, “Hilary.”
“It worries me staying in the same house with a man I don’t know, he is ok, isn’t he?”
Hilary smiled, “of course he is, I’ve known him since he was a child, he will be good to you if you are a good to him,” she wiped her hands on her apron, “now come on follow me, I’ll show you your room.”
Abbey picked up her suitcase and followed Hilary out of the kitchen, through a long corridor and into a large hall covered in old oil paintings. Abbey stared in wonder, “wow this is amazing,” she gasped.
Hilary was already halfway up the stairs, “come on Abbey, I don’t have time to mess about,” she shouted, waving her hands in the air.
Abbey ran up the stairs after Hilary, who then took her along another long corridor, “how will I ever find my way around here, I’ll get lost?”
“Don’t worry too much dear,” Hilary then stopped and opened a door, “this is your bedroom, on the bed is a map of the house, keep it in your pocket to help you find your way around until you get used to it, I will give you the rest of the day to unpack your belongings and to study the map. There is one thing I must warn you about while you’re working here though.”
“What’s that?” Abbey nervously asked.
“Whatever or whoever you see or anything you hear in this house, you do not tell anyone, the master is a very private man, do you understand?”
Abbey suddenly felt worried and nodded her head.
Hilary smiled, “don’t look so worried dear, if you look after him and keep him happy, he will look after you and pay you well, he doesn’t trust many people so if you prove your loyalty to him you could have a job for life here,” she then paused and sighed, “not many of the live in maids stay for long, they soon leave saying the master is too demanding. Some of them try it on with him thinking they can win his heart so they can be lady of the house, but he doesn’t fall for their gold digging ways, he can see right through them.”
Abbey’s eyes widened, “don’t worry about that with me, I’m not like that, I’m just here to work.”
“I’m not saying you are, now go and sort yourself out and come back to me in the kitchen when you’re finished and I will sort you out with your uniform, ok,” she smiled.
Abbey walked into the room she was going to stay in, she stood in shock, it was beautiful, it had an en suite bathroom. There was a large bed with a pretty pink flowered cover with matching curtains. There was a large wardrobe and dressing table, a cosy chair in the corner with a television opposite, a small bookcase and empty shelves on one wall. Looking down at the carpet, it was that plush her feet had sunk into it, kicking off her shoes she smiled to herself as she flopped backwards on the bed, how can the other maids not want to live here like this, she thought to herself.
Even though she really didn’t want to stay in the house with a man she didn’t know, she shrugged her doubts off, surely it wouldn’t be that bad working for Maxwell Forrester.
