“And this here,” said the museum curator, “is what we call the island Prince and Princess. They are two hundred years old and just brought to us from a deserted island in the Atlantic.”
The crowed snapped pictures at mine and my lovers’ corpses.
“We are not sure how they got on the island,” continued the museum curator; a short young man with brown hair. “But what we do know from studies done on their bones is that they were on the island for quite some time; decades in fact. We also found that they survived from only the food provided for them, which were fish and fresh fruit. However, there were also traces of toxins from tobacco, alcohol, pesticides, and processed foods suggesting they arrived at the island as adults, probably in their mid to late thirties. We also found dental work done on both the man and the woman.
“Our archeologist that discovered these bodies claims that they died in each others arms. The skeletons were found wrapped around one another lying on the beach. And since they were the only humans to have ever lived on this island, he named them the island Prince and Princess.
“Who were they? How did they get there? Where did they come from? The mystery goes on and on. We will probably never know. But, it’s believed that they were lovers due to how we found them.
“The museum had decided to keep this couple wrapped around each other just like we found them to emphasize on this mystery and we like to think that there is some romantic story involved in this. We also took the courtesy of building them a glass coffin to show the beauty of how a man and woman can love each other even unto death.
“Why in a civilized world with corruption, war, famine, betrayal, deceit; we often don’t know the meaning of true love. Many search their whole lives looking for it while others never believe it to exist.
“No doubt, our friends here in this coffin depended on one another for survival, helped each other, nurtured one another; even to the point of their deaths when they held each other waiting for the end.
“Did they find true love? Absolutely! Without it they would never have survived as old as they did.
“Our radioactive isotopes suggest that the woman was 105, and the man lived to be 110. It appears they died at the exact same moment.”
“Oh my God!” chanted people from the crowd.
“Yes,” continued the museum curator, “and like I said, they died of old age. There is no indication of trauma, disease, or any kind of natural disaster. It’s as if they just couldn’t live without one another.
“That is the story of the island Prince and Princess, our newest mummies to the collection. Now if you’ll follow me to the left please, I’d like to show you our next exhibit.”
The man was right. My lover and I did find true love, but we found it long before we escaped to our island. The only way that he and I could ever be together freely was by leaving and no turning back.
His story is simple. He knocked up a woman at a young age and married her. Years later, he met me and fell in love.
My story on the other hand, is much more complicated than that. And since you are looking at our skeletal remains locked in each others arms as we so often did when we had skin, I’d like to tell you my story.
