Nothing really...

Shade

By day we stay as far away

as love allows -

one from the other

Tonight I'll be your mother

I'll sooth the singe of sunlight

on your skin

A daughter to your darkness

till the end

The winter's frozen fingers

seize my soul

The heart you've torn apart

has made me whole

Allure for pain is somehow

summer's breath

Your light is night and life

has mimicked death

Embalmed inside a

rigor mortis shell

Pasty cool complexion

zombie pale

Marble eyes and countenance

of stone

Weep a quartz contentment

of their own

Thank you for reading this. I don't want to make you sad, though...

I am not sure I've got it right so here's my thought and perhaps you can set me right.

The speaker has been hurt by love and her soul interred in a monument to grief. But somehow love lives on despite. By day the speaker serves her love; by night she endures.

There's no setting you right, CR. Poetry is meant to assume its own meaning to the reader, though I have my own motives for words.

The piece is heavy laden with symbolism and metaphor, so literal translation does not entirely encompass my message - that's not to say it's incorrect; just not duplicative of my thoughts.

The inspiration of this is the "falling away" that sometimes occurs between couples. It may be brief. It may be permanent. The piece is meant to expose the cold atmosphere of that experience, the emptiness, the death of feelings, the loss in common quarters.

Thank you so much for reading and giving me your thoughts, CR!

Sarah C

I really enjoyed reading this.
Marble eyes and stone made me think of two statues, side by side. Maybe a couple who are staying together out of duty or familiarity? The passion and desire of their connection has gone.
Anyway, really beautiful writing! X

Is this like a breakup poem, or a poem about shelter in-place separation?

That's a really great question. I think it could be either one, but it's inspired more by both - not virally inspired, though. The best way I can put this, DL, is when lovers become dead to each other.

My god this was beautiful. Have you ever thought of writing a book filled with your poetry? I’d gladly buy it.
