“Zero, what the hell are you staring at?” Sadie asked as she waved her hand in front of Zero’s face. He had a habit of zoning out in the middle of class.

“I’m just looking out the window.” Zero replied coming back to his senses.

“Oh yeah, then what was today’s lesson about?” Sadie countered.

“It was about…um… something about science.” Zero replied trying to dodge the question.

“I knew it! You weren’t paying attention to any of it. I should tell your parents.” Sadie scolded.

“Sadie, leave him alone. He’s had a hard week, and everyone gets tired by Friday.” Sam said as she pulled Sadie away from Zero.

“I guess I can let it slide because it’s Friday, but make sure you’re more focused on Monday.” Sadie said as she walked off.

“Thanks Sam. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Zero said as they walked out of the school.

“You need to make sure you don’t do things like that otherwise Sadie will call your parents and you’ll get beat even more.” Sam said stopping Zero.

“I know it’s just that I met this guy and I keep seeing him wherever I look.” Zero answered walking around Sam.

“Zero is there something about your sexuality that you want to tell me?” Sam asked with a smile.

“No, there is not! He just interests me.” Zero said blushing.

“Alright, even if you were gay I’d be happy for you because at least then you would have someone to love you, even if your parents don’t.” Sam said as she waved good bye.

“She seems nice.” A mysterious man said as he walked up to Zero.

“What the hell do you want?” Zero yelled as he turned to face the slightly taller teenager. He had seen him before, his jet black hair and brilliant blue eyes shone out of the crowd like a beacon in the night.

“What do you mean? I thought that would be obvious.” He laughed.

“Well I don’t roll that way so stop following me.”Zero exclaimed.

“I just want to talk to you. I won’t force you into anything you don’t want to do.” He said hurriedly.

“Well I guess if you just want to talk we can go back to my house.” Zero said as he started walking home. They walked all the way to Zero’s house without exchanging a single word. When they got to the house, Zero walked around to the side of the house and the man followed. Zero began to climb the ladder, but the man stopped and asked,” Why don’t we go in the front door?”

“My parents will get angry if they find out I brought someone home with me.” Zero said as he began to climb again. The man followed him up the ladder. They both climbed in through a window that Zero had left open before he had left for school that morning. After they got in and settled down, Zero asked,” What’s your name?”

“My name is Cain, Zero.” The man said with a smile.

“How do you know my name?” Zero asked as he jumped back.

“I heard that girl say it earlier.” Cain answered.

“Oh, uhm sorry about that. I don’t have many friends so I’m not very good at small talk.” Zero said blushing.

“Its fine, I find it kind of cute.” Cain said smiling.

“I told you I’m not gay.” Zero said standing up. Cain reached up and grabbed Zero’s shoulder. Zero cringed and Cain let go.

“Are you alright?”

“Ya, it’s nothing.” Zero said sitting back down on the bed and rubbing his shoulder.

“Did I hurt you? I didn’t mean to.” Cain said quickly.

“No, I’m fine. It wasn’t you.” Zero replied.

“I should go, before I hurt you again.” Cain said as he got up and walked to the window.

“No, it wasn’t you it was my dad.” Zero called after him.

“What do you mean?” Cain said stopping.

“My dad whips me.” Zero said looking at the floor.

“Really? That’s awful!” Cain exclaimed.

“Well it’s true, none the less.” Zero said with tears in his eyes.

“Don’t cry.” Cain said lifting up Zero’s face.

“Thanks. I better go down stairs or my parents will be angry. Can we talk tomorrow?” Zero asked hurriedly.

“Sure. I’ll be waiting for you outside of your school, if you will go out with me.” Cain said walking to the window.

“I can’t.” Zero said blushing.

“Then I can’t come.” Cain said climbing out the window.

“Please come, I want to talk to you more.” Zero begged.

“I might come.”

When Cain left, Zero walked down stairs and was confronted by his father.

“When did you get home?” His father asked.

“Just now. I went up stairs to put my bag away.” Zero said trying to get away from his father.

“Well then, you need to go to the basement and prepare.” His father said as he walked away.

“Yes father, I know.” Zero replied sulkily. He walked down to the basement and over to a table. It had shackles attached to it. Zero took off his shirt to reveal scares riddling the pale skin on his back. He then proceeded to chain his wrists to the table. His father came down through the basement door just as he finished chaining himself up. Zero’s father grabbed something off the wall and walked over to stand behind Zero. His father lifted the object above his head and brought it down with a “Crack”. Zero yelled in pain, but this didn’t stop his father. He repeated the motion until Zero’s back was covered in blood from the cuts.

“We’re done for tonight. Go wash up and get ready for dinner.” His father said putting the whip away.

“I’m not feeling good, so can I just go to bed after washing up?” Zero asked as he unchained himself.

“It’s splendid that you’re not feeling well, so I will let you go to bed early.” His father said as he walked up the stairs. Zero walked upstairs and went into the bathroom. He took a shower to wash off the blood. It always stung because the water would get in the cuts and so would the soap.

After Zero finished washing himself, he walked up the stairs to his room and got started on his homework. He worked late into the night because he couldn’t focus. His mind kept wondering to Cain and his feelings about him. When Zero finally fell asleep, he had made a decision that would change his life.
