Summary

Urban monster wreaks havoc slaying the local population with menace. The town of Darkville lays just south of the river Mississippi. With a population of just over 25,000 it was seldom in the news but on one November night that was all about to change. An urban legend resurfaced from the dark sewers of the town striking fear and leaving carnage in it's wake. It was just an ordinary night in an ordinary town until the sexy scantily clad population made their way from the bars and clubs in the town unaware of the impending dangers which lurked in the shadows. The streets would be turned in to rivers of blood as the stench of death lingers long in to the night like the after smell of a smouldering bonfire. The victims torn limb from limb would be hardly recognisable in the human form discarded like meat carcasses in a slaughterhouse.

Devil in the mist - Chapter 1- Darkness brings terror in night of carnage

It was early in my childhood that I really began to think about death and why we will all experience it at the end of our lives. It is something that everyone fears and yet we are surrounded by stories of it on a daily basis.

What's more it is out of our control but the stench of it remains within our darkest fears,at some point we will all meet our maker in heaven or hell.

From childhood stories to legends of the past I believed that my wild imagination had the capability of assuming that there was no radical explanation in how or why we exist and knowledge of what would happen to us once we had passed on to the other side.

The only thing that I am sure of in life is the fear of the unknown and the constant evil that plagues our society.

For in the blink of an eye our life could be snuffed out forever by the hand of fate which awaits us each time we step in to the unknown.

In the past I developed an over active imaginative mind which tended to race and was Incapable of one particular train of thought.

It was controlled by fear, anxiety and excitement,no greater pleasure was afforded to me than becoming terrified by watching a horror movie which gripped at my insecurities and subconscious mind.

In reality we do not control our own destiny but it can play it's part and be the main core of fear that dwells within our spirit. It's not so much the thought of being snuffed out by a complete stranger or dying from some sort of gruesome death as in a road traffic accident.

By now my imagination has developed to always expect the unexpected and never to be disappointed or be at all surprised by what life has to throw at you.

In 2010 I moved to a small American town called Darkville, the population was around 25,000.It's location was quite isolated being tucked away on the edge of The Mississippi River.

I had emigrated some years previous after meeting and marrying my childhood sweetheart via an online social interactive website.

Although I had studied law at Oxford university in England for a number of years I didn't feel that this would be my preferred vocation in life.

I decided to make a clean break and dropped out of University without so much as a hint of regret instead I chose to pursue a career as being an author and part time historian in this new world where I find myself.

The town Darkville was a curious place and i couldn't really understand why it should be named so.I am told that there were many urban legends surrounding the history of the town including stories of vampires, werewolves and shadows of death.

I was rather curious about the latter but not much was known about these dark shadows and shape shifters.

Apparently they dwell beneath the pavements, drains and sewers and appeared most notably in the latter Part of the 19th century.

Rumour has it that they caused havoc amongst the local population spreading a plague which eventually wiped out a quarter of the population.

It was one foggy night in mid November when I realised that this dormant evil was about to resurface and with it the old enemy would once again wreak havoc on this unfortunate town.

I had just passed St.Luke's church as I was making my way through a foggy graveyard when I noticed that storm clouds were beginning to gather both in the sense of bad weather approaching and of ill fate which would manifest itself.

No sooner had I arrived at the centre of the town a fierce wind began to encircle me,it was by now just after midnight and most of the local population would no doubt be tucked up in bed or enjoying the nightlife in one of the two clubs at the edge of town known as the cliff top.

I had been visiting a good friend of mine who worked for a marketing agency and his house was a mere 10 minutes walk from where I lived.

I had discussed inviting him and a few friends around for a party to celebrate my wife's 25th birthday.

She had decided not to accompany me on this cold frosty night and quite sensibly remained in the warmth of our home and would be in bed by the time I got home.

We had obtained a town house which was close to all of the local amenities yet within the breathtaking views of the local river Mississippi.

I was about to approach my driveway when suddenly from nowhere I heard a loud scream which was coming from behind me.

It was the most piercing of shrieks and seem to have frightened off the local bird population as a few jackdaws quickly flew past me away from the tree where they had been perched earlier.

I quickly made my way to the source of the commotion but I found nothing.I pondered whether to go in to the house and forget about the noise or allow my curiosity to get the better of me.

In the end I chose the latter and continued my walk in to the centre of town from where I was sure the source of the screaming originated.

It was now approaching 1.30am and the town would be filled with young party revellers. The pizza takeaways would be overwhelmed by drunk and merry folk having a good time.

Most of these young people would be oblivious to what was about to manifest itself in the cold night air.

I was just approaching the local taxi station which was always a busy venue however on this night it appeared strangely quiet considering the time of day.

Just ahead of me I noticed two young girls in their 20's both walking and giggling together. They seemed to be the worse for drink and unsuitably dressed for the time of night.

I was concerned about their welfare and shouted out to them "excuse me ladies where are you heading? I notice you seem to be a bit lost".

Both of them seemed the worse for wear and didn't respond to my enquiry, perhaps their intoxication of alcohol had insulated them from the freezing night air.

Both of them were wearing mini skirts and flimsy blouses which revealed their voluptuous buxom chests, they were also walking in identical open toed strapped sandals.

I was amazed that they could even stand up or not sustain broken heels walking in their ridiculous choice of footwear.I guess a sexy fashionable appearance was everything to these attention seeking vain type of females.

I was now becoming irritated by their refusal to respond and irresponsible behaviour and tiresome giggling and so left them to it.

I had tried in vain to make them aware that they appeared lost and were vulnerable to any predators which might be lurking in the shadows.

It was only after a few minutes that I had reason to regret leaving these two ladies behind and not escorting them back to the safety of the town centre when suddenly I heard this awful noise.

From nowhere a sound filled the air,it could be best described as a deep thrust grunting sound mixed with snarling anger.

I had never heard such a peculiar and terrifying sound before it caused a commotion as something sinister manifested itself.A black shadow appeared from beneath the roadside,at first it began to encircle me before hovering above me.

There wasn't much more to describe apart from the intense blackness and mist which followed it like a dark entity.

Suddenly it took hold of the night air and started to descend rapidly towards it's intended victims namely the two young ladies whom I had left behind.

Shortly after I heard the most horrendous screams emanating from their direction.I ran towards the source of their screams and see for myself what this commotion was all about.

Then to my horror I viewed this black mist and the creature that lay within it tearing in to the two victims.

I looked on with sheer disbelief as the thing sunk it's teeth in to the poor ladies ripping in to their flesh like a knife through butter.

The road side appeared to be flowing with blood, although it was dark the trickles of blood poured towards a nearby drain.

When I finally got near to the scene of carnage it had only been a few minutes from hearing their screams to viewing their demise.

What I discovered horrified and chilled me to the bone for all I found were two corpses but there was no flesh on their bones for these two victims had been savaged so badly that only their blood stained bones remained.

It looked like something out of a horror movie, their flesh had been torn and ripped off their young pretty bodies and by now all of their blood had drained away.

Etched upon their faces was the shock and trauma of their cruel death with their jaws open and hollow skulls, even their eyes hadn't been spared.

It took me a few minutes to compose myself before I decided to alert the local sheriff of my horrifying discovery.

However on my way towards the local police station I noticed that there were other people who were becoming victims to this devil in the mist.

Just In front of me a young blonde haired lady who was once again scantily clad appeared to be pulling something off her left breast which was now exposed from her blouse.

She began to scream as the fiend started to bite chunks out of her ankle,it had dispensed with her sandal as the blood spurted out of her foot which had now been torn off her ankle.

Then the fiend started to bite in to her left thigh,by now the poor lady had passed out with shock and pain collapsing in to a heap on the nearby pavement.

I tried desperately to revive her but I could tell she was dead as she had no pulse, the fiend then became angry and turned on me with it's ferocity and I had become trapped by it's menacingly sharp teeth.

Quickly I distracted it with my zippo lighter and it released me from it's grip, running for dear life I made it to the local bus shelter and hoped that it would leave me be.

It followed me part of the way but then changed direction when it must have caught site of another group of ladies leaving The New York club.

I shouted out warnings to them trying to make them aware of the danger that was coming their way but alas it was all in vane.

A few seconds later they had become the devil in the mist's latest victims.Their screams were unbearable to listen to and I dared not look to see the damage this fiend was inflicting upon their human flesh.

I only caught a slight glimpse of the beast and I managed to see an outline of a face concealed within the dark shadow of the creature.

It's eyes were white in colour and it bad very thin teeth like a prehistoric dinosaur,It was by now biting off another victims toes one by one and seemed to be having difficulty in chewing as it began to spew out the crunchy bones.

The three ladies now resembled a pile of bones as I left the scene of carnage walking back home and trying to make some sense of what I had witnessed.

I was not in the right frame of mind to speak with the local sheriff and it would have to keep for another day.

A deathly silence fell once again upon this sleepy American town, dawn was only a few hours away.I would provide my version of events to the police in the morning after having a good nights sleep.

But I wasn't holding my breath that I would be afforded any rest after the horrors I had witnessed.

After locking up the house and fixing  myself a rather large Jack Daniels I made my way to bed and found my wife fast asleep with only the moonlight to keep me awake on that fateful night.

I would have to overcome my mental scars and ride out the emotional storm facing the next chapter of my life with the fear that gripped me and the knowledge that we are not alone.

There was a devil in the mist which resided within our community this presented the towns people with a real danger.

A new generation would have to overcome the demons of the past before they could move on with their lives.
