Summary

Everybody has a guardian angel. What happens when the boundaries of our worlds collide? This story follows a 21 year old girl named Emily, and the problems she encounters when she becomes face to face with a guardian angel named Nickolas. The problem is, Nickolas is not “her” guardian angel. He is her abusive boyfriend Justin’s guardian. Who is Nickolas supposed to protect? Justin, a man going down a destructive path of alcohol abuse, or Emily the one being physically and mentally abused by the man he is “supposed” to be protecting. A guardian is never supposed to abandon their human soul. This wouldn’t be a problem, if Nickolas didn’t have uncontrollable feelings for Emily.

Justin stumbles up the stairs after another night of drinking. His brown eyes are bloodshot. He heads up to the bedroom. Meanwhile, Emily is trying to get her things together so she can leave. She knows how Justin gets when he drinks.

The door opens and he walks over to her.

“What are you doing” He slurs.

“Leaving” She grabs her bag and walks toward the bedroom door. He grabs her arm to stop her.

“Why?” He asks still slurring his words.

“You can’t keep doing this” She says already starting to tremble. She gets this way every time she gets scared, and when Justin is drunk, Emily is always scared.

“Come here, come here” Justin says in a serious voice while pulling her close into him.

She looks into his eyes and she sees it. That man he always becomes when he has been drinking. He looks as if he was looking through her. She could see anger in his eyes.

“Stop” She fights trying to get out of his grip, but he backed her into the wall.

“You’re not going anywhere” He mumbles into her ear

“You don’t even know where the hell you’re going” He says still forcefully holding her against the wall.

“Anywhere is better than here!” She yells finally releasing the words she could never say to him.

Right after the words came out she regretted it. She saw his anger build in his eyes as he swung. He struck her with an open hand, his palm busting her lip.

She let out a cry. She knows she needs to get out of this house. Emily keeps struggling to get away from him. Once she finally succeeds at pushing him off of her, he grabs her and throws her towards the queen size bed. She falls into the bed just short of falling on top of the mattress. Justin grabs her again, and throws her on top of the bed.

“Get off of me! Justin please.” She yells through her tears.

“I do everything for you, and you think you’re just going to leave?” He says still slurring his words.

She thinks about everything that he “doesn’t” do for her. How he goes out drinking whenever he wants, and almost never pays attention to her. But this wasn’t the time to fuel the fire.

Justin is still holding her down with a hand around her neck, pressing her into the bed. He is very strong. She knows she has no chance at fighting him.

“Please” she chokes. At this point she is shaking uncontrollably.

He looks down at her his eyes softening a little and he releases his hand from her neck. At that moment, she pushes his body off of her onto the floor. Which was easy considering his night of drinking hindered his balance. She then runs into the bathroom; which is connected to the bedroom, and locks the door.

She looks at herself in the mirror, her blue eyes are red and full of tears, and her light blonde hair is a mess. She then notices her bloody lip; he has never hit her before. Emily falls to the floor and hugs her knees. She hears a lot of noise in the bedroom. Outside the door Justin is yelling and throwing anything he can find. He is so angry right now and all he wants to do is fight.

“Get the fuck back out here!” “Emily!” He yells punching the door.

At that moment Emily got a very calm and safe feeling. She didn’t understand why she was feeling like this in the middle of everything that was going on. For the first time in a long time she didn’t feel alone.

*********

Emily wakes up with daylight flooding into her eyes. The floor she had been sleeping on was cold; she had been covered up with a towel. She slowly stands up catching her reflection in the mirror. She looks pale compared to her normal golden skin, and her eyes were still red from crying all night. The blood from her lip had dried on her chin. She can’t take the image of herself, so she turns on the shower. The bathroom fills up with steam, and she climbs in. She stands there while the water is beating on her chest, and after a moment she falls apart. Everything came rushing back to her. She starts crying and hitting the wall next to her. She hates how she feels like it is always her fault. She finds herself making excuses for him all the time; even when she knows he is the one who is wrong. She knows she should just leave but she can’t. Just then she hears a soft knock at the door.

“Emily” A low voice calls from outside the door.

She felt like her heart had stopped, and she freezes.

“Please, just go away” She cries.

“Em, are you okay” He says in a way that would sound worried to anyone who was listening, but Emily knew different.

It always happens like this. He starts to apologize and she believes him. He always gets into her head.

“Em” He attempts one last time to get her to talk to him. After she doesn’t respond, he walks away.

Justin walks over to the bed and sits down resting his head in his hands. His short dirty blonde hair is all over the place. He looks around at the mess he created the night before. He doesn’t remember everything that happen, he never does.

“Can you please get me some clothes” Emily calls from the bathroom. She had no other choice. She didn’t want to go out there and get it herself, and she couldn’t wear her blood stained clothes to work. It was bad enough she would have to find a way to cover up the marks from the night before.

After a minute of looking around, Justin grabbed a pair of jean shorts and a solid black tee-shirt. He knocks on the bathroom door. Emily walks toward the door half afraid to open it. She starts feeling shaky again. She cracks the door, but he pushes it all the way open.

“Get out, what are you doing” She fights to push him out of the door while trying to hold her towel tight around her. She started to feel all defensive again as if it was still the night before.

“Don’t fight me, it’s okay” He grabs her close, and she stops fighting because it wouldn’t do any good. Tears start to escape her eyes once again. She shuts her eyes and bends her head toward the floor. She doesn’t want to look at him, she can’t.

He is holding her tight. “I’m not going to hurt you”

“You already did” she mumbles.

“What did I do Em” He lightly grabs her chin to make her look at him.

She looks in his eyes for a moment, but is forced to look away. His dark eyes were now soft and all of the anger behind them were now gone. There it is, the reason she can’t leave. Everyone makes mistakes right?

“You hit me and you had your hand around my throat”

“You know I would never mean to hurt you right?” He says in a soft voice; sounding so convincing.

He lifts her chin up again to look at him. “I was drunk, I’m sorry I did that to you Emily” He whispers as he kisses her forehead and then moves down to her cheek. She tries to pull away, but he holds her close and wipes away her tears.

“Emily, I love you. When you told me you were leaving I just got so upset and blacked out.”

Maybe he really is sorry. He was drunk; I shouldn’t have gotten him so mad. Emily starts to feel guilty for being so hard on him.

He lightly starts to kiss the side of her face where he had hit her.

The night before started flashing through her mind. It was so easy for him to hit me like that. What am I doing wrong? Just then a tear came out of her eyes.

He then starts to kiss her neck as he backs her into the wall that was right behind her. He slowly slips his hand under her towel. She felt his warm hand on her thigh. She always gets lost in his touch, but this time she fights the feeling.

Emily grabs his arm “Stop, you can’t just keep saying sorry and expect everything to be normal.”

Justin picks her up, carries her to the bed, and lays her down. He climbs on top of her. “You know you’re going to forgive me anyways. And I know you want this just as bad as I do”

He is right; I can’t stay mad at him. I wish I knew how to stand up to him. I wish I knew how to be happy. Emily feels so overwhelmed that she stopped fighting him.

Justin pulled her towel off and started kissing her chest, and then moves up to the side of her neck.

He rolls off of her onto his back, and takes off what remained of his clothes. He then gets back on top of her. He pulls her legs apart so that they were on either side of him.

She feels his skin on hers. He had been ready for this since he busted into the bathroom. Sex seemed to be all that was on his mind.

“We shouldn’t do this” She whispers to Justin as he pulls himself close to her.

“Just relax baby” He says as he pushes his body inside her. She wasn’t ready and wasn’t in the mood; which made everything painful.

She pushed on his chest to stop him from going in, but he grabbed her hands and held them into the bed.

“Stop, it hurts” She tells him while trying to pull her hands out of his.

“That’s because you’re fighting it” He says into her ear sounding angry again.

She felt dirty. How could she be doing this with the man who hit her last night? Emily closes her eyes just wanting it to be over. She held in the pain and tears and let him do what he wanted to do.

Once he was done he headed into the bathroom to take a shower. Emily got ready for work and left without saying goodbye.

I am going to get away. One day I will have the strength to walk out that door and not turn back.

Emily sits in her car and texts her best friend.
