The gent lay on his bed in darkness, his laptop screen a minor source of light. He was staring at his screensaver, Bonnard’s The Bowl of Milk, unable to break away from the girl who met his gaze with blackened sockets. The BOC playlist is almost at an end with You Could Feel the Sky offering a mournful and sardonic coda to his weekend. Soon he would have to get ready for work, back into the people horror, the voices, carrying out futile tasks attributed deadlines and importance.  The gent  had earlier watched a YouTube documentary on hackers and wished he was part of their beautiful and intangible universe, an inner landscape of rats and bots, a solitary life immersed in the illusory sense of power zombie malware facilitated, a creature of malignant coding, an infection.  Mating with their free kind, upon the crags, in the hidden recesses.  The battery of his laptop was on the verge of cutting out but he could not be bothered to get up and plug it back in. He was almost asleep on top of the bedcovers when the screen faded to black. Waking in the night to urinate, the gent found he had company. Brian Peppers was stood in the far corner of the room, wearing a heavy black anorak, his visage lit up a luminous grey, source code running down its misshapen contours. 

 

It had to be Peppers; you couldn’t mistake the distinct malformed face for anyone else really. He spoke to the gent. Pepper’s voice was crackling and distant, like a spoken word record played on a phonograph and seemed to come from out of nowhere as he kept his pallid lips resolutely compressed. He told the gent that Mary’s web is not creepypasta. Quantum computing would soon be a reality.  Peppers fell silent.  The gent found his presence comforting and soon resumed sleeping. During the week he e-mailed Subgirl thirteen times and received no reply. The gent posted all her pics and e-mail address on 4Chan’s /b/board and wrote up a stench with the accompanying text which was suitably disparaging. Message her for free. Remember her.
