Chapter 1- It’s Rodeo Time

Brent Coldwell straddled himself unto the bull they called Hot Blonde. He placed his gloved right hand under the rope that was tied around the bull’s torso and signaled a nod to the bullfighter to start the show. The bullfighter signaled for the announcer to announce Brent and his bull, hot blonde.

The announcer received the bullfighter’s signal and started his announcement. “Coming out of the hooters bucket chute from Dallas Texas is Brent Coldwell ridding Hot Blonde,” the announcer said.

The bullfighter opened the bucket chute gates to let Brent and his bull out. The bull huffed and started to make its move. It jumped out of its compartment and started bucking and twisting with Brent straddled on its back. Brent tried to keep his posture and composer up on the bull as it bucked, spun and twisted it’s body, in an effort to knock Brent off. Brent still held on tight for another four seconds, before the bull managed to knock him off it with one buck of its hind legs. Brent flew over the bull’s head and landed on the hard dirty debride ground. The bull fought Brent on the ground. It bucked and tried to slam into Brent’s side a couple of times failing at its attempt. The bullfighters had to move in and take the bull under their control, swiftly guiding it into an exit chute.

“That was a great effort Brent made making 5.05 seconds,” the announcer said over the loudspeakers. The crowd started to go wild with applause by the announcement of Brent’s score.

Brent got up, picked up his hat from the ground and exited the arena. He could still hear hot blonde’s huffing from within the bull exit gate’s as the bullfighter’s struggled to get him under control.

As Brent made his way towards the locker doors, he heard his eight-year Son call out his name from behind.

“Dad, hold up,” Samuel yelled as he and Brent’s friend jumped down from the bleachers.

Brent swiftly stopped and turned around to meet his Son. Samuel ran into his Father’s arms. “Dad, you were amazing out there,” Samuel said against his Father’s stomach. “You really showed that bull who's boss,” he added.

“Thanks, Son,” Brent said.

“Great riding out there, Brent,” Brent’s best friend, Phillip said standing a few inches in front of Brent and his Son.

“Dad, when are you going to win the championship?” Samuel asked his Father as he looked up at him.

“Soon, Sammy. I’ll win it just for you,” Brent answered. He smiled down at his Son. “But for now, I’ve got to go change out of my riding clothes,” Brent said.

Samuel released his Father. “Are we going home now?” he asked.

“As soon as I change into my street clothes Sam,” Brent replied.

A news reporter and her camera crew made their way over to Brent. “Hey, Brent. Can you tell us a little about how you felt on the bull while riding it?” she asked, slamming into Brent and almost knocking Samuel over.

“Sammy, come over here and let your Dad talk to the news people for a minute,” Phillip commanded.

Samuel annoyingly let out a deep sigh and turned to walk over to Phillip’s side.

Brent made sure his Son was safe from the vigorous news team before he turned his attention to them. He dusted the dirt off his black hat and placed it back on top of his head. “Well, riding hot blonde was like riding a motorcycle. It was exhilarating,” Brent said looking into the camera man’s lens.

“I know hot blonde can be stubborn. How did you stay on her for so long? The reporter asked. She moved the microphone on Brent.

“Well, like I stay on all my bull riding. With patients and high endurance.”

“Do you have a particular favorite bull riding moment?” she asked.

“Um, yes. During the 2017 world finals. I rode blue smoke. Now she was a tough one to ride,” Brent said into the camera.

The reporter moved the microphone away from Brent and placed it close to her mouth. “Alright, folks you’ve heard it from Brent Coldwell himself,” she said into the camera. “Thank you, Brent, for your time.”

Brent nodded and excused himself. Before he continued towards the lockers, he told Phillip and Samuel to wait for him at his Truck. They agreed and went their separate ways.

Brent walked into the locker room and headed towards his own locker. As he unfastened his chaps and pulled it from around his waist, a fellow bull rider came up to him. “Great riding out there Brent,” he said giving Brent a slight pat on the back and walked away.

Brent turned to look at him. “Thanks, Josh,” he said with his eyes glued to the young fellow bull rider. Brent put away the rest of his riding attire and changed into a red flannel shirt. He then closed his locker.

Coming out of the front doors of the locker room building, Brent could see Phillip and Samuel waiting for him at his grey Tacoma truck. He nodded a wave at them as he made his way over.

“Hey, Brent, Samuel was just talking about getting some ice-cream,” Phillip said.

“We’ve got a lot off ice-cream at home Sam. You can have a bowl when we get home,” Brent told his son.

“Okay, Dad,” Samuel said with his big brown eyes lite up with excitement. He scurried over to the passenger’s side of the truck.

“Well, Phillip, I guess I’ll see you later. Thanks for watching my boy,” Brent said to his best friend.

“No, problem Brent. Anytime,” Phillip said.

“How’s that back injury doing?” Brent asked.

“It’s doing okay. Healing better than I thought,” Phillip said, placing his hand on the spot where he injured himself.  “I really need to get back on the bull.”

“Phil, I think your bull riding days might just be over.”

“I hope not Brent. As long as I’m alive and still kicking it’s never over,” Phillip chuckled.

“Alright. Just be careful next time,” Brent said, smiling at his friend.

Philip nodded. “Be sure to do that Brent,” he said.

Brent opened his driver’s car door and hopped in. “Take care of yourself, Phil,” Brent said before he shut his truck’s door. Samuel was already inside the truck with his seat belt secured.

“Alright, Brent,” Phillip said, and then walked towards his own car.

Brent started his car and reversed out of his parking spot.

Driving down I-45 N freeway, towards Dallas, Texas, Brent turned on the radio on his car system. The sounds of Thomas Rhett fleered via his speakers. Samuel did not seem to find any difficulty singing along to the song. In fact, he seemed to love the song a lot.

“Look what God gave her, How perfect he made her, She walked in the room, It’s like he answered my prayers…...” Samuel sing-song to the lyrics.

Brent could not help but smile to himself as his son sang along to the song. He knew his son was a big fan of Thomas Rhett’s music. He himself was a fan as well. Brent loved music. His favorite was country music; he loves them from Jake Owen to Jason Aldean.

Brent finally pulled his car into the side garage off his two-story ranch he lived in out on the hillside of fort worth. The ranch was a livestock ranch. He usually used the old ranch for bulls and cow breading. The bulls were breaded to help him with his bull riding and the cows where breaded for meat. He even built a small bull riding arena on his ranch for practicing.

Brent lived at the ranch with his Aunt Lorraine and his golden retriever, Max. His Aunt was mostly there to help him take care of his Son and things that needed to be taken care of at the ranch. She did not really love what Brent did for a living, but she could not stop him. He was a grown man of thirty-five years old. Although, she made sure his Son came first before his bull riding.

“We're home,” Samuel said. He opened his car door and got out. Brent got out of the truck after him.

They walked into the house through the side entrance, which led into the kitchen. Max met them at the door. The medium sized dog jumped on top of Samuel almost knocking the small boy down. Brent could see Max was excited that they were home. Aunt Lorraine was nowhere in sight. Brent thought maybe she had retired to her bedroom for the night.

“Sam, you said you wanted ice-cream, right? Brent asked his son for reassurance.

“Yup,” Samuel nodded, rubbing Max’s head.

“Alright, two scoops of ice-cream coming right up,” Brent said. He opened the freezer door and got the ice-cream out, while Samuel left Max’s side and hopped onto a bar stool.

Brent opened the drawer and got an ice-cream scooper and two spoons from the utensils compartment. He then got two bowls from the cupboard and turned around to place the items down on the bar counter. He opened the ice-cream top and scooped two spoons of ice-cream in each bowl.

“Here you go, Son,” Brent said, handing his Son his own bowl.

“Yay, ice-cream! Samuel excitedly exclaimed. He quickly dug into his ice-cream.

Brent walked around the kitchen bar and sat down next to his son. “So, Sam, did you enjoy tonight?” he asked his Son. He took a spoon full of the cold thick creamy goodness into his mouth.

“Yeah, Dad, it was awesome. I thought you were going to go into the championship round.”

“Yeah, it wasn’t at this rodeo show Son. Another one is coming up. This one the year's finals. Do you wanna come watch?” Brent asked his Son.

“Yeah!” Samuel excitedly said.

“Alright, Sam.”

Brent heard Aunt Lorrain’s voice behind him. “You guys back from the rodeo? Aunt Lorraine asked.

Brent cocked his head back to look at his Aunt in the doorway. “Yeah, we just got back about ten minutes ago,” Brent answered, looking at Aunt Lorraine through the dimness of the light in the room.

“Alright, just wanted to make sure. I’m going back to bed. You guys finish eating your ice-cream and go to bed,” Aunt Lorraine said. She turned and walked back into her bedroom.

Brent noticed Samuel had deliberately dropped a scoop of ice-cream on the ground by his feet for the dog to lick up.

“Sam, don’t give the dog ice-cream. You’ll give him worms,” Brent warned his Son.

Samuel chuckled and watched the dog lick up the ice-cream on the wood oak tiled flooring.

“You know Sam, my career is really taking off. I don’t want you to feel like your needs will be ignored,” Brent said. He scooped a spoon of ice-cream into his mouth.

Samuel turned to look at his Father. “I’m fine Dad. You’re the world’s greatest bull rider I know,” Samuel said, smiling up at his Father.

“I know Son. But I feel like maybe I’m not paying enough attention to your needs,” he said. “Maybe we should hire a nanny.”

“Why? I love spending time at the arena with you,” Samuel admitted.

“Well, your Aunt is going back to work soon. I think it will be good for you to have a nanny.”

“If you say so, Dad,” Samuel said, shrugging off the subject and finishing his ice-cream.

After they finished their ice-cream, Brent put his son to bed. He held his Son’s hand as they walked up the foyer steps and down the second-floor hallway to his Son’s bedroom. Brent then helped his Son change into his night clothes and get into bed. He then cut off his Son’s bedroom light, leaving his night light on and then walked down the hall to his own bedroom.

Brent undressed down to his boxer briefs. He got into bed and cut off his bedside lamplight. He pulled the covers over his body and laid on is side. He thought about his rodeo show he had just performed a couple of hours before. His time spent on the bull kept repeating in his head. He kept going over his strategy. “Clasp the bull tight. Don’t let go! Try not to fall off before the eight seconds is up.” Those actions kept going on and on in his head. The bull flashed in his mind. He knew he had a problem. The obsession of bull riding was taking over Brent’s mind. He needed to win that championship. He was after-all a three-time championship winner. This would be his fourth championship win if he won. He will have another championship trophy to add to his collection. It was harder for Brent to sleep that night, but he managed to fall asleep.
