Breakfast wasn't fulfilling. It never is when you're poor. Everyone was poor now. You see, we are called peasants. Even the richest of the peasants called us peasants. The ones in the middle class were considered peasants. Everyone was a peasant.
The King is settled in his high golden throne, watching down at his kingdom. You know he won't do anything about it. Yet no one has the courage to stand up against him. Not even the strongest warriors who the King keeps at his side.
The King is afraid of them so he becomes friends with them. He gives them women, money, their own land. He invites them to parties and feasts. He laughs, drinks, and gambles with the warriors so they won't hurt him. While he builds their trust and partnership, he blinds them so they won't see us. So they won't care about the cruelty he gives us and they will go with their stupid rich lives. The warriors are the only ones who aren't peasants.
When the warriors walk back into the villages heading to that hell castle, we "peasants" stand aside and bow our heads or we run inside for cover. Woman hide their faces, afraid to draw a fierce warriors attention. We fear them just as much as we fear the King. I am a woman but I do not fear.
The warriors pass by my hovel, my pig sty, to the castle and they sneer at me, with a hint of a lustful smile. I hold my chin up and frown at them. I scoff at their 'bravery and mightiness'. One warrior pushes me and grabs my behind.
"What are you looking at, little lady?" His foul breath and putrid body odor makes me curl my nose. He has oily dirtfilled hair that hangs to his shoulders and he stains my clean apron with the press of his filthy armor. I push him away, sick to my stomach. "This little lady has got quite a body, eh?" His voice, thick with an Scottish accent, felt like gravel hitting a window. He drew his sword and stuck it into the ground beside him.
Anger boils deep inside me, hotter than it already is. These men have no manners. A couple of warriors chuckle behind the beast in front of me, but they move along, watching and glancing back at us.
Before I could spew my rants ready to give him and ear full, another beast charges up to us. A magical mystical beast if it weren't for another brute seen riding the animal. "Charlie, get back to line. I didn't give you the order to go take any woman you want. You won't do that here, not in our village."
The beast grumbled, sheathed his sword and carried own his way, not looking back. He took out a little swinging mace and began swatting crates, kicking the dirt.
I turned my attention back to the brute on the horse. I scowled at him to let him know that I wasn't to be agitated by him. The man was just as big as that Charlie but more fit, big with muscle, not muscle and fat. His eyes were dark, face as stern as when he spoke. He didn't seem as filthy as the pig before. His hair was cut short to prevent being in his face. It reavealed the rugged look in his cheeck bones and jawline. "You best be inside, missy. No one needs to see the likes of your people when we arrive into town."
How infuriating! "And none in our village would like to see the likes of YOU people here! Always causing trouble, always taking things that don't belong to you, always breaking stuff, all dirty with no manners, no moral, no citizenship. You're just a bunch of ogres and trolls who have no right to even call this place yours. You're all just a bunch of big, ugly, dirty children who steal, rape, and murder. Who would even call you men? No one wants you here! Just get out! Gather your men, your little buddies here, do this village a favor and leave!" I huffed it all out in one breath, sure that I was about to faint.
The man had a smirk but it was clear that a flame of anger was ignited in his eyes. Some warriors were in shock, some were angry, they all just kept walking and watching. The man hopped off his mare and strolled towards me. The reins still in his hands. I held my chin high defiantly. "You are some woman." There was a bit of satisfaction in his voice.
The brute towered over me. He was wise to keep his distance or I would've thrown my pan in his face. His eyes ran down my figure. As expected from these disgusting men. "What is your name?"
I roll my eyes at him. "You have no reason to know." He glanced at the line of men. There were fewer men now. It was visible where the march of warriors would end.
He turned back to me and gestured to my hovel. "You live here?"
"Yes." Oh idiot! I responded without thinking. I looked through the little window to see my mother and father gaping at me in shock. I hung my head a little in shame for my foolishness. I glance up at the giant who had climbed back onto his mare. "Then 'til we meet again, miss."
I let out a scoff. "I would glady thank the Lord to never see you or your men ever again." His mare snorted.
"We'll see, miss. Very soon." We geld each other's gaze. For me, because I wanted to prove that I accepted his challenge and that I am not the meek type of woman. Him, I do not know why, but his gaze wasn't as hard as mine, it had a softness to it.
Surprising to me because these men had no such emotion. He lifted his reins. "Very soon." He said again but in a whisper, his eyes gazing as if he wanted to seer my soul. He galloped off without looking back.
Strange. Very, very strange indeed. "Thalia!" I turned to have my head smacked by my mother. "Look what you've done! When I tell you to get inside you get inside! Oh my heavens what are going to do? They're going to ruin us! We're doomed! It's because of you, young lady! Oh my Lord, oh heavens."
My father placed his hands on my mother shoulders. "Now, now,  Pennia. Calm down. Let me handle this." My father ushered my mother back into the house then turned to me still standing in place rubbing the pulsing bump on my head.
I'm not used to being lectured by my parents. "What are you all looking at?!" My father shouted at the other villagers who were staring at us. They looked away flustered and hurried their own way. "Thalia get inside. Now!"
"Yes, Father."
