I asked some
boys
if they had seen the
bird.
Yes, the one that woke
me every morning.
Though I cursed it for
waking me
I enjoyed its company;
its irrepressible,
gleeful and
spontaneous
chirp
lifted me
as high as
the tree it lived
in.
The boys
laughed:
“Here it is, we killed it”
one boy casually
said, and pointed
proudly.
He sort of grinned at
me
lending me
just half a
smile and then
walked off.
Suddenly I saw
the poor dead
animal
lying on the
ground
a bloody wire
round its
slender
neck
and a tiny blood pool
congealed
above its
head
as though
Nature had provided a
halo to declare its
wild innocence.
In that guiltless victim’s
agonising death
and in its young
murderers’
unrepented
crime
I saw that
the human heart
is black as
the raven’s
beak
and deserves
an eternity of
pain.
