Sonnet X

(the green rose) PROLOGUE

I saw green rose in the garden

Splendor'd things in the morning dew,

O what lovely these are just few

To whose lips sweet things have spoken;

I love the em'rald gem 'bove leaves,

From buds to flower lovely it blooms,

I love its soul o'er heart have rooms,

Stretches o'er eyeless heart believes.

But still I had to leave and sworn---

To the lovely Flow'r-- my love

I shall not pick thee, nor to have

For nature's claim, your life has born

I shall but thank for this life's gift

Man would e'er love with patience lift.
