My Take on Poetry

This is a limerick, my friend,

And to explain it, I must send,

It doesn’t have to rhyme,,

All of the time,

Just as long as it does at the end.

A poem like this isn’t the worst,

But the second line must match the first,

And to make it even more absurd,

The fourth line must match the third.

The prose I write the most are easy,

I can make up anything really fast,

And the only thing I have to plan,

Is to have the second line match the last.

In prose, you can use any variation,

You can “talk” with or without quotation,

You can end each line with duplication,

All you need is a little imagination,

Sometimes you can use a beginning,

And without any particular topic,

You might want to write something funny,

And perhaps leave the reader grinning.

An ode is a short bit of poem or prose,

It can be about a person or a thing,

It need not rhyme at all if you want,

Because it’s all about the object.

Example:

Ode to the Butterfly

Here’s to the clever butterfly,

Who is smart enough to know, I’ve heard,

That if it flies in a scattered pattern,

It won’t end up as lunch for a hungry bird.

But a true poem is an extension of the poet’s thoughts or feelings and can be about anything:

I am Ben, a mini-master of words,

Thrown together, sometimes randomly,

Sometimes with purpose and meaning,

To entertain and encourage others to do the same.

So, purge the dark thoughts from the bowels of your brain,

Pluck the ideas from the bins of your imagination,

Rip the emotions from your heart,

And throw them at the world via words

that only you can use to express yourself and who you are.

Then be that person that no one else can.

I am Ben.
