Genium Cooper, who goes by the nickname Coop, couldn't believe how ironic the song on his car radio was. It was the song "Nothing Left to Lose" by The Pretty Reckless. Listening to its lyrics, Coop realized how very little he had to lose. His life had basically turned into a nightmare over the last four years. He was sixteen, severly depressed, alone since his mom had died, awkward, cutting himself, being abused by his father, and developing an addiction to the medicine he was supposed to treat regularly for his depression after his mom's death.

Taking all of this in, Coop started to notice that pools of tears were forming in his eyes. He tried to wipe them away, but his efforts were futile since he knew that he would end up crying anyways since when he got home he had to deal with his father, John, who ironically was the sheriff of their small Californian hometown of Lakeview. Lakeview was a nice place to live, very scenic, but Coop had started to absolutely hate the town. He knew that was unfair to the town because it was all due to his own emotional problems, but he didn't care because the town had caused him such pain for the last four years of his life. He was supposed to be having the best years of his life, but instead he was experiencing a life of pure and absolute crap.

Coop looked over at the empty passenger seat and envisioned a few hours before when his best friend, Paul Bennett, had been sitting there. He always made Coop feel safer. Paul and Coop had been best friends since fourth grade when Paul moved there with his mom who was a nurse and was rarely home. Paul was less awkward and had more friends than Coop, but was also almost normal and he and Coop had little to relate on now ever since that Darcy Wilson had moved to town. Darcy, who was sixteen as well, blonde, and slightly tanned had become Paul's new obsession of a girlfriend. They had started moving pretty fast though, but Paul and Darcy didn't care. They were all ready in love in their minds.

Coop had his doubts about the young couple, but he never shared them with his best friend or the sweet girl in question. He actually enjoyed Darcy's company, and she was always trying to set him up with her friend and at one time Coop's biggest crush in the world, Kayla Forrester. Kayla was a cheerleader and never even noticed Coop's existence like the set up for a couple in a teen drama. Coop however didn't even have any true feelings for Kayla anymore not even resentment or anything like that. He knew that if he ever talked they would be friends, but he didn't care enough to try and do so. He acted nice about Darcy's attempts to get him a girl though. The truth was that Coop was confused about his sexuality and who he was. He didn't know what he wanted in life, and he didn't know who he wanted to be with: a guy or a girl.

He had never questioned his sexuality before, but he just noticed Kayla's boyfriend, Jason, more than her when he moved to town two years ago. He became a star hockey player and definitely had the body to prove it. Jason Young was the epitome of teenage sex and happiness, and Coop was the exact opposite. He didn't feel emotionally attracted to Jason though seeing as Jason was probably the biggest douche in the entire state of California. Maybe that was over-exaggerating, but Coop believed it in his heart. Jason had bullied him ever since the Young family had moved to Lakeview, but Kayla made him quit because she felt pity for him. Coop didn't need her pity, or anyone else's except for Paul's.

So of course Paul was completely oblivious to the fact that the graceful sheriff of Lakeview beat his son. One time Coop literally thought he was going to die and that John was going to beat him to death, but he managed to survive just like he always did after his mom died in the car accident that Coop blamed on himself ever since the day it had occurred. He remembered it like yesterday she was picking Coop and Paul up from baseball practice. He had quit the team after middle school and didn't carry on to his high school team since she died. He and Paul got in the backseat and buckled up and were crossing an intersection when all of a sudden a drunk driver had hit her side of the vehicle head on and caused her to die instantly. Paul and Coop walked away from the accident with cuts and bruises and Coop blamed himself for it and his father did all the time. John always shouted that it was Coop's fault that mother, Lynn, was dead.

Lynn Cooper had always been Coop's source for inspiration, hope, trust, and love. His father hadn't been like the way he was now until her death. Coop also blamed himself for that because of course he caused the accident and her death made his father become a raging alcoholic who beat his son during drunk fits of rage. However now the sheriff was starting to beat Coop when he was sober as well causing Coop to become even more scared and defenseless against the older man. Coop had fought back once and the sheriff beat him on his back with his leather belt, and ever since then Coop wouldn't dare to hit him or even kick when he was down.

It was after that one severe beating that Coop had first cut his wrist. He just wanted physical pain to try and let out the emotional pain he was hiding from the public. Coop bled out just a little from the cut since it was not too deep and he revelled in the blood pouring from his wrist. He thought cutting himself and bleeding out even if it was only specks of blood was what could help him deal with maintaining his so-called "goofy, class clown" public image and not cause anymore beatings and problems to come down upon him from his father.

He felt somewhat guilty that he even still loved his father because he knew subconsciously that he shouldn't after all the man had done to him. Coop still clung to hope that he wouldn't always be like this and that he would somehow revert back to the way he had used to be before his mom's death. Coop knew that that wasn't likely to happen, but one could always dream. He sighed heavily when he turned up his driveway and climbed out of his black Jeep Wrangler and closed the door. He loved his car more than anything, and that scared him a little also. He braced himself for the beating that was sure to occur.

While he was mentally preparing himself for what was going to happen soon, Coop heard a howling in the distance which he thought was strange since he'd never heard wolves in Lakeview his whole life. He had during family trips and vacations he used to take with his family but didn't anymore, but never in Lakeview. He quickly ignored the noise and slowly made his way into the house trying to make sure the door didn't creak or slam as he closed ever so gently.

John Cooper stood near the stairs that led up to Coop's room, his sanctuary. Coop closed his eyes knowing what was coming and John quickly delivered a punch to his nose and Coop fell down harshly on the floor creating a sharp pain in his back. He winced in pain as his father kicked him three times mercilessly and leaned down to punch him in the face yet again before spouting something about him being a failure and Lynn's death being his fault before he retreated to his room which Coop affectionately called the Lair of the Bastard.

Coop stayed in the floor for about five minutes before deciding that he should get up in case his father came back for more, and ran up to his room and closed the door and quickly locked it before heading to the bathroom adjoining in his bedroom and grabbing a towel to clean the blood from his nose and mouth off with. He succeeded in cleaning himself off and flopped down onto his bed wincing again in pain as his back hit the mattress.

He had looked at it in the mirror, and it was bruised and turning purple in discoloration. Coop thought again of the wolf he had heard and quickly drifted off into sleep. He didn't notice that Darcy was lurched up against the tree near his window watching him in pain. She had a secret to keep of her own and she had now known of Coop's secret abuse. She had been alerted by the howl which she knew was no ordinary wolf as she was no ordinary high school student. She had to help him somehow she was thinking to herself as she saw a black shape prance around the woods before she chased off after it, disappearing into the night and leaving Coop sleeping in bliss from being safe from his father at least until morning time.
