Coming Home
The drive seemed to go on forever. Of course, moving from Detroit to the northern side of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan was no picnic either. After eight hours of driving, they had stopped in Manistique for a late dinner and decided to spend the night. Being back on the road at five in the morning sucked but they’d be at their new home by mid morning. Clare hoped she was doing the right thing, moving her daughter back to Laughing Fish for her senior year. Raine need to be near her family. Raine’s father had been killed in a hunting accident when she was six years old. Clare hadn’t been able to handle the daily reminders of David so she had packed up her little girl and moved to the other end of the state.  The new surroundings hadn’t helped much in the 11 years since. All she had to do was look at Raine to see David. Same dark auburn hair, cinnamon colored eyes and chin. At least she has my cheekbones and nose. Claire thought glancing at Raine who was sound asleep in the reclined passenger seat. And, she’s short like me too. She looked at the U haul truck following closely behind the SUV. David’s father waved when he saw her looking in the rear view mirror. Karl and Jean had tirelessly helped with the packing and moving of most of their belongings. They had even found a house just outside of town for her and Raine to live in. They were clearly overjoyed that their granddaughter and daughter-in-law were moving back to town.
The dream started out as it always did. It was night in the forest. The full moon was lighting up the mist floating up between the trees. Raine was standing on a moss covered path. The ground was cool and velvety beneath her bare feet. Her hair drifted over her naked back and tickled her hips. As she walked forward, a dark shape appeared on the path ahead. She kept walking and the shape became that of a dark colored wolf. The wolf started moving away. Raine walked faster then broke into a run chasing it. It remained elusive, staying just out of reach.
Raine woke up with a jerk, the morning sun nearly blinding her. The SUV, followed by the moving van, turned onto a long gravel drive that was lined with trees. A creamy yellow farm house stood toward the back of the property. Its white trim gleamed in the bright sunlight. It had a wrap around porch and she could see flower boxes in the upper story windows overflowing with pink and white flowers. There was a two car garage to the right and behind it, nearly to the trees was a small barn. They came to a stop next to the steps. Raine scrambled out, overwhelmed by the weird sense of familiarity.
Clare felt tears burn her eyes. It was the perfect house, everything she’d ever dreamed of. It felt like coming home. For the first time in a long time she felt the heavy burden of guilt and grief ease. Karl put a hand on her shoulder and gave Raine a one armed hug.
