"By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one for another."

- John 13:15

_______________________________________

16-year-old Sean sat in the third pew back from the front, head ducked, eyes in his lap. He listened to Pastor Carl up behind the podium, warning the congregation of the momentum the homosexual movement was gaining, reminding his parishioners of the sin of Sodom and God’s judgment. He turned their attention to San Francisco, considered by the Christian community to be modern day Sodom.

“And now.” He smacked his fist on the podium. “And now, this movement, this evil entity, is creeping into our hometown, our community…our schools. The enemy seeks to destroy our children, poison their minds.” He straightened up and stood tall, rigid. “They are teaching our youth that it’s okay to be gay. It’s just an alternate lifestyle. They are leading our children to Hell!”

Sean flinched. His head began to throb. The bible he was clutching in his hands slipped loose and thumbed dully against carpet. He didn’t pick it up. He just stared at the black leather cover, the gold words: Holy Bible.

Tears burned his eyes. He tried to blink them back but they slipped free and drained down his cheeks. His chest tightened until he felt he couldn’t breathe. He had never been so terrified in all his life. He was going to hell…and there was nothing he could do about it.

He was gay. A “faggot”. And God hated fags.

_______________________________________________

Sean is a fictional character, but his situation is very real among the youth in our churches. There are kids scattered throughout our congregations, terrified of admitting to their families, their churches, their friends…that they are gay. These Christian kids grow up on the teachings that homosexuality is worthy of death, that there is no greater sin against God. And that God HATES it.

So what is a child to do? They live in despair. Many determine not to be gay, pray to be delivered and healed. They agonize over their condition, sometimes for years, begging God to make then “clean”, make them “Straight”. And when it doesn’t happen, they feel lost, often sinking into depression and despair, certain that they cannot be gay and still be a Christian. It becomes a torment for them, a living hell. Many seek out “ex-gay” programs, desperate to be ‘fixed’, believing the hype that a gay person can become straight. And when that attempt fails as well…their despair deepens.

Many will sink so deep into despair that they begin to view suicide as their only option. Taking their own life becomes the LESSER of the two evils. And they leave this world feeling dirty, ashamed, unloved and unwanted by the very ones who are supposed to love and support them the most. But even worse…they step out of this life believing God hates them.

And WHY? Simply because a boy is attracted to another boy. A girl to another girl. This one single thing, this ‘same sex attraction’, this reality they are born with, did not choose…it is held against them and treated like a disease of the mind and body. How many of our children would be alive today, living happy lives, if they had just been told the truth? If someone had taken them by the hand, rather than shoving them away, and made them understand that they are the way they are because GOD made them that way, that He loves them as they are, and they CAN be gay and still be one of His children.

What are we so afraid of? Why do we fear gays? We call it the “homosexual movement”, as if it is a plague moving across our land. But what does that label even mean, really? How many gay people do you think you have met that you thought were straight? That you enjoyed their company without even realizing you were conversing with a homosexual? They are people like the rest of us. They have hopes and fears, aspirations, goals, the need to love and be loved. Why do we treat them like another species? They are no different than any of us. And I think it shows a lot of sinful pride on the part of straight people who proclaim that God loves them more than the gays. The bible calls ‘Pride’ an abomination before God. Yet no one mentions that, though they are quick to pluck out scriptures that they insist claims ALL homosexuality to be an abomination.

But before you try to use the bible as a shield for your homophobia, at least have the integrity to actually learn what the scriptures mean and the context and culture in which they were written. If homosexuality is such an immense sin against God…then why didn’t Jesus mention it? He spoke of adultery, divorce, fornication, loving your enemies, loving God and loving one another, forgiving one another, ‘killing’ one another with our words…but not once did he mention this great sin of homosexuality. And yet none of the sins He DID mention are held in as bad a light as being gay.

I find it sad that the church of God is so filled with hypocrites and some of the LEAST ‘Christ-Like’ individuals. People often consider the term ‘gay Christian’ to be a contradiction. But more and more I’m finding the term ‘Christ-Like Christian’ to be much more of a contradiction. And being a child of God myself, that reality deeply grieves my spirit.

Christians are long overdue for a wake-up call. We are pushing people away when we need to be drawing them in. And this consistent brutal war on homosexuality is catching our children in the crossfire. They are becoming our casualties of war. Why are we ignoring Christ’s teachings? What happened to ‘Love One Another’? Love Your Enemy? Forgive one another as God has forgiven us? Turn the other cheek? Where is Christ’s love in God’s church today? In God’s followers? Who are we to tell anyone they can’t be a Christian? That they are going to hell? That God HATES them? Who are we to condemn – it is CHRIST who died!

It’s time we all re-examined what the bible “really” says about homosexuality. About what it means to be gay and Christian. If you really care about our kids, about our gay Christian brothers and sisters, then just please take a little time to review these resources. I used to be afraid that if I re-examined even one element of my beliefs, it would unravel my entire faith. But it didn’t. Sometimes we get things wrong. We’re Christians but we’re still human beings. It’s not up to us to decide who God loves and who He doesn’t.
