"So you think the solution to your problems is to emigrate to Zimbabwe? I think that’s a terrible idea! Seriously Erin!” Lauren very bluntly told her sister.

Erin had decided it was for the best if she, Julian and the baby, went to live in Zimbabwe indefinitely. Her ‘relationship’ with Marcus was wearing her down as he did not seem to want to commit to her. But Lauren was trying to stop her from making the worst decision of her life yet.

“It’s for the best sis. A fresh start away from–“ Erin tried to explain to her sister but Lauren cut her off mid sentence.

“It is not for the best! You’re in fact running away from your problems. Have you thought about Julian in all of this? He adores Marcus. And what about me? Do I not matter?”

“Lauren, I’ve made a mess of things with Marcus. By getting pregnant, then sleeping with him regularly now. I…I just…need to get away. Clear my head. And of course I’ve thought of Julian and you. It’s just that…well life hasn’t been that great for me in recent years and a change might do me good. Hence me wanting to emigrate”

“What about Marcus and Darren? You’ll be taking away their kids. Oh Erin! Please! At least talk to Marcus. Tell him how you’re feeling and what you want. Don’t just up and move abroad before trying to make things work with him. I know you’ve had a rough time in recent years but this is madness!”

“Why should I bother talking to Marcus? He doesn’t love me!”

“Please Erin! Talk to him. I’m certain he loves you too. And the baby you’re carrying, his baby, is precious to him. You’ll destroy him if you take his daughter away. You’ve said how much Marcus has changed for the better since you came into his life. If you leave…it’ll all have been for nothing”

Erin sighed. Lauren was right. It was worth trying one last time for an actual genuine relationship with Marcus. But Erin wanted marriage, a home of her own with him and lots of babies. Not what they had going on now. But Marcus seemed not to want anymore than that.

“Okay! Fine! I’ll talk to him. But don’t tell him my plans. I’ve only told you because you’re my sister and I needed your advice”

“You can be so frustrating and hotheaded Erin. But I love you and want nothing but happiness for you” Lauren said embracing her sister.

It was Erin’s day off and hers too. Erin had invited her over to Marcus’ house for a late breakfast which they had just finished. They were at the kitchen sink doing the washing up, when Marcus walked in. He was in his gym clothes and back from his regular workout session. He also had the day off and Julian was at school.

“Hello ladies. Do I detect the faint smell of bacon?” Marcus asked sniffing the air. He was ravenous after his workout.

“We had a full English breakfast and I’ve left yours in the microwave” Erin told him. Marcus kissed her cheek in appreciation. He knew he was spoilt by Erin cooking his meals. And he loved her cooking.

“Right! I’m going to leave you two now. I’ve got errands to run and an appointment with the dentist later. Oh! What fun I have” Lauren said jokingly.

“I’m sure Mario will be gentle” Marcus teased referring to his dentist brother. Mario and Lauren had become good friends but Marcus knew that his brother fancied her.

“Have I missed something?” Erin asked in confusion. Since when were her sister and Marcus’ brother that friendly? Sure she, Lauren, Mario, Luciana and Marcus, spent time together regularly but when had Mario and Lauren become close friends?

“You haven’t missed anything sis. I’ll see you two soon” Lauren kissed Erin goodbye on the cheek and left Marcus’ house. She hoped her sister would talk to him sooner rather than later. Lauren really did not want Erin to emigrate.

“Oh! I’ve just remembered. There’s an invitation I put on the coffee table last night for you to look at. Have you seen it?” Marcus asked Erin. He was busy tucking into his late breakfast and thoroughly enjoying it. As Erin had not seen the invitation, she went to the coffee table to retrieve it.

An invitation had come through the post for Marcus. It was from an Addiction Awareness charity, that he supported. They were having a fundraising black tie event and had invited him and a guest, to attend. After Luigi had died, he had become active in raising awareness about addiction.

Marcus had had substance abuse issues himself years ago hence he was passionate about helping others. He had not told Erin a lot about his younger years and was waiting for a good time to tell her about his past substance abuse. Steve kept pestering him to tell her, but Marcus was actually afraid that he would scare her off.

“Wow! A black tie event. Very fancy. You should invite Luciana or better yet Melanie along. With DC Bertrand on your arm, you two will turn heads. She’s also a keen philanthropist I hear”

Marcus looked at Erin in confusion. What on earth was she trying to suggest and why would he invite Melanie? Was Erin still upset about her propositioning him or was she merely teasing? He wondered.

“Actually, I assumed you would be my guest. So I’ve RSVP’d and confirmed that a Mr Biaggi and Miss Kennedy, will be attending”

“Oh Marcus! You didn’t! I hate black tie events so I’m going to have to decline the invitation. Not that you even asked me to be your guest to start with” Erin replied clearly annoyed with him. Then she realised that Marcus was joking. He burst out laughing.

“Relax my love. I would never do that without asking you first. It would be rude to. But I really hope you will accompany me. It’s this Friday” he told her.

Relax ‘my love’, Marcus had said. Erin wondered if he had meant it literally or if he was just teasing her? If Marcus actually loved her, she would eat her police issue baseball cap. No, he definitely did not love her. If he did, he most certainly had never shown it.

“I don’t know Marcus. It’s a black tie event where they’ll be couples and we’re not a couple. Maybe you could ask Luciana–"

“I’m not asking Melanie, Luci or anyone else, to accompany me! I want you there” Marcus responded feeling slightly annoyed at Erin’s less than enthusiastic response. He desperately wanted her to attend the event with him. She instead told him she would think about it.
