Summary

This is an unusual foray into nonfiction by Alan fashion. What is art? And what is good writing? Are there any good or bad motivations to right? The book says really it's all a matter of technique and your motivation is not so important. People might worry that when they have written originally about all their deepest worries and fears, then posting it online will you think cause them understandable apprehension. Yet, the book has answers. And it may reduce some of the worry in people's minds. Perhaps, the book will even discover some gems of literature that otherwise might not have seen publication. Good writing is not all about worries and fears. And it is not the writer's own worries and fears at least. But then, many quite normal people have the same ones. And writers might not have written anything as personal as they think. The book has this and more tips.

Some people say that introspection is useful for the writer and other people say it can be a harmful and does not help people being creative. You might produce a more decent work if you are more aware of your writing skills that you really do need. And your judgment can't be clouded by thinking that if you put down all your feelings, then that alone makes it a good book. Also, some say that to write better, your book can't be introspective about all your fears, worries and concerns you have. This is just not art. But then possibly with a bag of tools for writing, you could make your worries into art for other people. Yet others say that dwelling on your innermost fears when writing a book and having it 10 times as bad as well when posting it later online is only going to make you worse. This is if you're already somebody who worries. And really, this is only really by common sense that writing such a book will cause you anxiety.

Also, some people say that you will cause your readers anxiety as well. This is the opposite of what some people think that if they talk about their problems, then they will help others also with problems. Instead, you might just give them your anxieties as well as their own ones they had already. And this could even be about the same things.

Anyone could read your book. So you're doing nobody any benefit at all. And the best thing you can do is think of something else you would enjoy a bit better. As well, readers would not want to read your work if you were to write one. So you are at least not wasting your time and can do something more productive. For example, you can be a better friend to your friends and work on your relationship with your girlfriend. If you are to spend a lot of time writing, these might inevitably be poor. And this is as well when these are such important things that can help you to have a better life if they were better themselves.

'Writers do not recycle their anxieties for everybody else' that some people once heard as this is wrong. Also, the same or different person might just have said that you need a beginning, middle and an end and then it's a novel. Or you have to put some kind of art and scope into it and not just write it as if you're chatting to a friend.

Nor can you write just to pass about 5 or 10 minutes of your time. This is when otherwise you'd be bored or have nothing to do. Writing takes longer than that and at least several hours per week. Still, it can pass some time for some people. Being able to write is a skill you have to develop a bit more usually than just casually. The time taken to write can be too long for some people. It can affect their having a normal life. They might not have good social skills if they take too long on their computer.

Other people not having done any serious learning since they left school that is sometimes many years ago now might feel anxious over restarting their studies and the amount of learning involved. This is to write a book properly that would be a well-constructed and grammatically correct book with no spelling mistakes. And this is let alone having something more going for it that people would want to read it who were normal customers for anything else. This might be that the book had literary merit or the author knew what he was talking about or he had an original idea to write about. As well, posting work online at the same time as having to learn basic writing skills can be stressful. And waiting until you've learned how to write better can be infuriating that you could have your work out there that really might be OK. Readers might criticize any work that was not much good or had any actual mistakes in it with its writing.

Sometimes when somebody is criticised online for having had some mistakes in their book to do with how it was written and not the content or style but mistakes you might expect your school or college teacher did actually tell you about and as well told other people about but you had forgotten or not done it, then people having experience of being criticised like this might not really feel there's any good reason to continue with their work anymore. It might be a lot of learning to get up to speed again. This is just as they should have done to start with before they had ever posted work online. And it is heart breaking to take everything down you put online and to have to have another look at it before you can post it once more. This is even if you did feel like doing that. You really though might not feel like going on your word processor to edit it all and correct basic mistakes. Also, you really might not ever write really well. Some people don't after all as how else could there be well-known successful writers that people want to read if anyone could do it. This is really if anyone could turn his or her hand to it and had a word processor.

Possibly, you might think that you don't really like word processors anymore when the heat from the screen and the amount of keying might probably have affected your concentration to write well to start with. This is when otherwise you would already have probably written something decent. You might see no solution to hot screens, computer desks and keyboards. It is unfortunately part of being a writer it seems today. This is if it wasn't even worse in the past with typewriters that had their own problems and downsides. But then, it is not something people would want you would think to sit at a hot desk. And definitely, nobody would want it who was struggling in some other way also with the other parts of their life.

If people don't see any point in posting work online unless it was going to be the same quality as a book you would get in a normal bookshop years ago, then they might see that they are only doing a job that you should get paid for to learn so much about it. Or it is work they should have started when they were teenagers. Also, it is too much work and too much learning for a hobby. And they may not want to feel like they're going back to school either. It makes some people feel anxious and that they have too much learning to do. As well, they feel pressured to learn quickly so they can get work out there.

Later, people might hear as well that writing is not all about anxiety, hopes and fears. And this one fact can help some people. As well, books are definitely not usually about the writer's own personal problems. Or it is almost never about them directly. And writing is not usually even indirectly about the writers' own problems. If anything, writing like this is bound to make somebody feel bad about his or her writing and distract them when they are writing.
