"Morning, twerp"

Kai turned around, breaking up his yawn, then relaxed his expression when he saw who stood behind him.

"Ah, Tetsuo, good morning."

"I was wondering if you'd be alright."

"I'm fine."

"You didn't look fine at all." Said Dante "You were so distracted, what was on your mind?"

'AH…aah aaah ah! KAI!....MORE,AAAH!'

"....nothing."

Lilith walked up behind him and put her arm around his neck.

"Well, you better get your head straight," she said "you have to beat me this time."

"I'll try." Kai replied then took out his phone. "Lsten, I still have four hours to go against you again, I have to talk to Keisuke, do some work too, I'll see you then."

"Sure, good luck."

Kai walked inside the school in a hurry. There was no real way he could've known, but he knew exactly where he was. He just needed to get there before he moved. Before he disappeared again. Kai made his way to the garden, finding the boy sitting in the middle of it. A bird standing on his lap as he read a small particular book. Kai stood, watching his back for a couple of seconds, then took a deep breath and walked up to him.

"Keisuke."

The boy closed his book, then turned his face toward Kai, who was  standing still behind him.

"Yes, Kai?"

"I just… wanted to ask you something.”

“Well, what is it?”

“Wh-Please, just tell me where I know you from.”

Keisuke picked up the small bird from his knee, then carefully set it on the floor next to him for him to stand up without scaring him.

“We grew up together.”

“What is that supposed to mean? Why can’t I remember you?”

“Because you can’t remember anything at all.” replied Keisuke with a certain tone.

“But I thought I would at least remember the important things.”

Keisuke didn’t say anything, he just looked to the side, with narrowing eyes, and let out a sigh.

“What did you mean?” asked Kai before Keisuke could say anything.

“What?”

“What did you mean when you said that my strength could be my weakness?”

“I was talking about everyone.” He replied, obviously annoyed.

“What?”

“Oh, will you--- look, someone if someone is very muscular, what is their weakness?”

“Too much muscle will slow you down.”

“If someone is too skinny, what’s their strength?”

“speed.”

“Weakness.”

“Softer blows.”

“Exactly, now. If someone is too flexible, what is their strength of combat?”

“Lilith’s on close combat.”

“So her weakness is….”

“I can’t really have weapons.”

“True, so draw her toward you, then attack.”

“But how?”

Keisuke turned around to pick up his book, where the bird was now standing on top of, picked up the little creature with his finger, set it to fly, then turned back to Kai.

“That’s up to you to figure out.” He said, walking away.

Kai watched him. He opened his mouth to call out to him again, but with what excuse? It’s not like he could just ask him to stay, not when he didn’t even have the decency to remember him. Kai let out a sigh, then walked away.

***

“Lilith, forward.”

The white snake walked to the center, then stood firm. Kai swallowed hard, then turned to look at the audience. Same people as before, Keisuke sitting where he usually did. Kai looked straight at him, but quickly turned around the moment the boy smiled at him.

Kai took a deep breath, then positioned himself.

“Go, Lilith.” Ordered Gethen, a louder voice than the previous times. perhaps, even he was getting impatient.

The little princess unsheathed her sword, then ran toward Kai after she realized he had no intentions to move.

Kai took a deep breath then focused on dodging the sword. Tetsuo and Yuu opened their eyes wide at the sight. The movements were so focused and well timed they couldn’t believe Kai was the one fighting. Lilith slashed the sword from the left side to the right. Kai was waiting for that, he threw his torso to the right, folding his body enough for the sword to pass above him, then jumped on his hands, wrapped his legs around the woman’s arm and slammed her body against the floor. Lilith let out a loud grunt as she landed, Kai immediately jumping over her body, kneeling above her. Kai held Lilith’s wrist, then tried to throw a punch at her, but she didn’t give him that chance. Lilith forced her body to turned, grabbed Kai’s wrist with her other hand and slid out from in between Kai’s legs, making his face slam against the concrete. Lilith stood up, then jumped backwards. Kai picked himself up, then stood on his ground. ‘Draw her toward you, then attack’

The princess narrowed her eyes, this time she would not come close. She knew he had figured her out, she knew he knew exactly how to beat her, but, even if she wanted him to be able to beat her, she wouldn’t just hand him the victory. It would be pointless if she did. Kai bit his lips, then got his next moves together in his mind. The boy took a deep breath then moved toward Lilith again, this time, with a definite combination with a specific order rather than just planning attacks and throwing each one when the time seemed right. Kai wiped as much blood as he could, then licked his lips. The moment Lilith smiled at him, challenging him to come close, Kai ran toward her. He jumped up threw an air kick at her, then, when she dodge it the way he knew she would – splitting her legs and placing the sword above her for protection – he slammed his foot down, grabbed her by the wrist, picked her up when he landed on both feet, slammed her body as hard as he could against the floor, once, twice, then  dropped her. Lilith did let out small screams and grunts, but she still, despite the pain, stood up immediately at the first chance she got.  Kai took two steps back after he saw Lilith’s angry glare. That was exactly what he was going for, but, right now, it seemed like the worst idea he had ever gotten. Kai took a step back to every drop of blood that dripped down the little princess’ forehead. Lilith spun the sword in her hand, then charged against Kai. Kai smiled. It was an entirely nervous smile, but he smiled. That’s what mattered. Kai dodged every attack thrown by Lilith. The kicks, the punches, the combined attacks, the sharp blade, even when Lilith spun in her hands to throw four consecutive kicks, she was unable to reach Kai. Kai broke his impulse then threw a back kick against her stomach, sending her back a couple of centimeters. Kai returned every attack, throwing her further and further back. When Lilith tried to return the punch, the boy dodged and threw another punch, to which Lilith responded with a kick. Kai saw the opening, threw his hand back as much as he could, then quickly punched Lilith as fast and hard as he could, the punch landing on her chest area. The moment Kai’s fist came in contact with Lilith’s skin, a spark of lightning ran through his arm, shooting right at Lilith. The princess let out a scream as she landed, the sword flying off her hand, as her body shuddered from the electric charge. Kai opened his eyes wide and ran toward her, a worried expression all over his face.

“LILITH!” screamed Usha, then quickly made her way to her.

“Lilith! I’m so sorry! Are you okay?! Did I hurt you?” asked Kai as he kneeled next to her. He reached a hand to her, but took it back, afraid it would happen again.

The lord turned toward Gethen and narrowed his eyes.

“This was not mentioned to me before, captain.”

“I didn’t know this. Otherwise I would have informed you.”

Dante pushed Kai off and reached for Lilith, checked her pulse and vital signs, then let out a soft “shit.” The moment he did so, Gethen rushed toward her. Kai rubbed his face in anguish, refusing to turn back at Lilith.  The boy closed his eyes shut, all he did was listen at Dante practice CPR on the little princess.

“Okay, she’s fine.”  He said, when Lilith became responsive again. “she’s pale…if it stays like this she might go into shock. Usha, help me.”

“What do I do?”

“Elevate her feet, I need to put her chest higher than her head.”

“Okay…”

Kai rushed inside, followed by Keisuke. Whether Kai was an asshole or not, he couldn’t stand the thought of killing someone. He had never done it, not even for a job, no matter how high the offer was.

Gethen watched them both, then turn back to Lilith.

“She has a slight burn on her chest, I’ll get some medicine.” Said Gethen as he stood up and made his way inside.

“Kai!” Called Keisuke, trying to catch up to him as he walked around the building.

“Go away, I don’t need this right now.”

“Come on, wait up! My legs aren't as long!”

“I said go away! For fuck’s sake, just do it!”

Keisuke stopped running, he put his hands on his knees, and panted. The boy watched Kai walk away, then lower his head. Perhaps it was best to leave him be for now. At least until he calmed down a little.

***

Lilith let out a small grunt, then opened her eyes. She hadn't been in a hospital in a while, it made her feel out of place all of a sudden. Lilith turned her head to her right, finding Kai as he sat right next to her, his head down, buried in his hands, as he rested his elbows on his knees.

“Kai?” She called, making his throw his head up. “What happened?”

Kai stood up and walked closer.

“I...I hurt you. But you’re okay now, they just need to do a small test on you and then you can go home.”

“If I’m okay, why are you making that face?”

“I...uh…”

“ Kai, I’m fine. Really, you don’t have to feel guilty about this. It’s not like you did it on purpose.”

“Yeah….I know, but I feel like I should make it up to you.”

“Hey, you want to make it up to me? Go to the cafeteria and buy me a chocolate cake. I’m craving it.”

Kai smiled at the little princess and stood up.

“Will do.”

***

As Kai walked in the cafeteria, he spotted Keisuke sitting on one of the tables, drinking something from a thing glass cup.

“Hey, Keisuke.” He said as he walked up to him.

“Hey. How you feeling?”

“Fine.”

“What do you want?”

“Not much. Lilith wanted chocolate  cake.”

“Okay. She’ll kill you if she doesn’t get it soon.”

“She’ll get it.”

“Can I ask?”

“Yeah, whatever.”

“Why did---

“My father said that I was lucky to be alive”

“F-father?!”

“When I was little…I got struck by a lightning. So, now, sometimes, my body still produces some sort of charge.”

Keisuke narrowed his eyes and looked straight at Kai. His expression a worried one.

“I... I don’t think that’s the reason Kai…”

“Whatever. It doesn’t matter. I got to go, need to take this to Lilith. I wonder if she’ll be able to fight against me soon.”

“She will not.” Answered Gethen from behind Kai, holding the piece of cake, then handed it to Kai.

“What?”

“The sword fell from her hand, no matter the circumstances, you disarmed her. It was your victory.”

“But---

“No buts. Now go upstairs and give her that cake before she tears you limb from limb.”

“…yes, sir.”

***

Kai walked around the garden for a bit, the image of the lightning all over his mind.

“Fuck….what the hell…?”

Kai kicked a small pebble and turned on his heels to walk back to the campus. As he did so, he spotted Keisuke, placing his hands on the dry tree, resting his head as he did so. Kai watched him for a second, then continued making his way inside.

***

“Usha step forward.” The captain ordered, a cynical smile on his face.

Usha was angry at Kai, for him, this was going to be entertaining. Kai bit his lips, then stood on his ground to feel safer.  Didn’t help much though with the queen glaring at him with narrowing eyes, as she held a grip around her sword. Usha took a step forward, threatening, strong, indirectly forcing Kai to step back.

“Hold your ground, lynx.” Ordered the captain. Even he was having fun with Kai’s response. “I didn’t say you could start scaring him.”

Usha let out an angry sigh, then took half a step back. Usha was firm from head to toe. She stood with her legs slightly opened, her back straight, shoulders broad and her head up. The thin transparent clothing around her stomach revealed her toned muscles.  Kai took a deep breath, it was different than with Lilith. She looked cute, was dangerous. Kai could only speculate how deadly she could be. However, Usha was a completely different story. She looked as dangerous as she was. That made Kai a bit more nervous than when facing Lilith.

“Go Usha.”

A shiver ran through Kai’s spine as Usha slowly unbuckled her weapon from the belt that held it. It rested behind her for better movement, and it was easy to reach in case it was needed. The weapon alone was  a problem for Kai. It was good for both close and far combat.  The handle measuring 25 centimeters in length, the blade thirty centimeters wide. That scythe was a dangerous one. the blade, just like Yuu’s weapons, contained thin diamond blades along the edges. The blades handle was attached to a chain that could reach up to five meters. That, to Kai’s bad luck, was a few meters longer than the radius of the area he was fighting in. The queen usually used it for one of two reasons. Either she would pull the enemy closer then slash, or slash in a distance with the blade at the other end of the chain, which could be easily removed and reattached in less than one second.

Usha walked around, Kai instinctively walking in the opposite direction. The queen began spinning the chain around, looking up and down Kai’s body. Usha stopped, then threw the chain at Kai, aiming at his upper body, the boy  managed to dodge, but Usha saw that ahead. She had placed her hand in the middle of the chain, the moment Kai moved to dodge, she threw the other end, holding the side, making a cut from his stomach to his chest. The moment Kai landed, Usha jumped over him, wrapped her chain around his neck, jumped off and forced Kai on his feet again. By the time Kai was on his feet again, Usha was back to back with him. She swung the chain over her shoulder and pulled forward as she pushed him away with her left leg. After some seconds, Usha moved her back kick to the front and slammed Kai’s body against the floor in front of her. Usha jumped above him, knees on the side of his chest and slammed her fist against his face as hard as she could. Kai let out a grunt the first time his head went on against the concrete, a small splash of blood staining the gray blood as his forehead cut opened. After a couple of blows, Gethen shook his head angrily and put his notepad down.

“Usha! Enough!” scolded the captain.

The lord did nothing but chuckle slightly.

“Forgive me, captain, but….I think Kai allowed it.”

“What do you mean.”

“Usha and Lilith are like sisters more than anyone in your team.  He hurt her, and he can tell she’s angry.”

“It was not Kai’s intention.”

“No, but can you blame her? Imagine that was Camelia. Would you have been calm?”

“Calmer.”

“But not entirely. Perhaps Kai isn’t as much of an asshole you think he is.”

“Perhaps, but I doubt he would have been able to move away, even if he was the asshole I take him for.”

Usha still kneeled above him, her fist punched right over her shoulder as she narrowed her eyes. Kai said nothing. He didn’t speak, didn’t move. Truth is, he was expecting another blow.  Usha let go of Kai’s shirt, and stood up, buckling her scythe back in her belt.

Kai opened his eyes slowly and looked up, finding Keisuke kneeling above him. By the time the boy spoke, Kai was already too dizzy. His eyes getting blurry, his ears ringing. All the pain he hadn’t felt as he received the punches all came to him at once. Kai looked at Keisuke, but focused his eyes on his mouth. He could word out what Keisuke was saying, but he couldn’t hear him desperately call his name.  All his words seemed somewhat muffled. Kai raised his hand and placed it on Keisuke’s cheek, running his thumb over his mouth softly, then tangled his fingers in the boy’s black hair before it dropped motionless.

“KAI!” screamed Keisuke, putting his hands over the boy’s chest, trying to wake him. Nothing. It was just one more muffled scream.

Dante ran to Kai as Gethen ripped Keisuke away from him. Usha walked away, without looking back, but with hesitation.  The bear turned to the walking lynx, a bit of disappointment in his eyes, then turned back to Kai, checked him quickly and sighed in relief.
