Day is bright, wind is calm. Nero looked up, put his hands before his face, blocking the sun with his fingers, then looked back down after he heard someone calling him. “Scarlett” he thought with a smile as he saw her waving. Nero walked up to her and gave her a warm hug. They had been best friends for a while, but somehow she felt like she really didn’t know him enough.

“So, how’s your new girlfriend?” She asked as they walked down the university’s corridor.

“Oh wow. No please one word at a time.”

“Ha-ha! Sorry, sorry… Haven’t been paying attention lately”

“To her?”

“To anything”

“Well, you’d better start, your new semester started two days ago. I hope you’re at least paying attention to that”

“I’m trying. I swear, but something feels really----

“Nero!” called a voice at the end of the hallway.

Both Nero and Scarlett turned around.

“Speaking of the devil.” Joked Scarlett, playfully hitting him in the arm.

“Um… sweetheart, I know you think you’re playing around, but your blows actually hurt.”

“Psht, wimp.”

Nero walked up to the little lady and gave her a hug, a kiss in the cheek and held her hand, tangling his fingers with hers.

“Hey, Scarlett! We’re going for some burgers, wanna join?”

“uh.. I... n-no” She said, looking slightly bothered.

“c’me on, Scarlett. We barely get to hang out. It’s alright, come join us.” He nagged.

“I can't Nero”

“Come on, it won't be fun without you.” Nero gasped and tried not to turn to the glare he was receiving. ‘Open mouth insert foot.’ He thought as he bit his lips. “I – I mean, it won't be as much fun wi----

“Save me” he worded without saying anything. Stupidity would always come out when he was with both those girls. He preferred not to speak.

“No, no. I- I have a lot of work, so… I’ll be going now.” Said Scarlett giving the girl and awkward smile.

“Alright, bye!” She said looking more than pleased that Scarlett was leaving.

Scarlett gave her a glare then began to walk away. Nero did look upset, but he didn’t say anything.

“Come on Nero, I have to be back home early.”

“Yeah, okay.”

[one day later]

“Scarlett, I’m sorry about yesterday.” Nero said as he put his bag on the floor, next to Scarlett’s bed.

“It’s fine, don’t worry about it.”

“Why can't you guys just get along?”

‘Because she’s a fucking bitch that can't get a damn life’ Scarlett thought as she turned around.

“We do get along!”

“No Scarlett, you don’t!”

“Don’t scream.”

“Why does it matter so much to you?”

“Because I care about you, and if you don’t like her… I don’t know…” Nero pouted sitting at the edge of the bed.

“Thanks for dropping me off by the way.” Said Scarlett desperately changing the topic

“Yeah, no problem”

“You’re staying for dinner, right?”

“Yeah, considering the possibility that your mom will let me go home after dinner.”

“Ha-ha! Yeah, that’s true.”

“What’s wrong?”

Nero stood up.

“She told me something really weird today.” He said with a serious tone.

“Something” Nero said almost whispering as he moved one step closer. “Something I somehow got happy to hear.”

“Started with an indirect threat. She said that… I’m too clingy to you, that people will start making rumors that I’m cheating. Some random shit like that.”

“She then said that it would be better for you if I distanced myself from you.”

“What?!” exclaimed Scarlett showing anger in her eyes. “How does that even make sense?!”

“She said that… if she liked a guy, and that, if that guy was dating, she would prefer it if he wasn’t there touching her and hugging her---

“What are you---

“Do you like me, Scarlett?”

“Nero I---

“Well, do you?”

Scarlett looked away. She knew he was slow, but to think he’d come at her like that…

“I... I...”

Nero walked up to her, grabbed her hand and pulled her closer.

“Do you?”

“Please stop…”

Nero took a deep breath. He grabbed her face by the chin, turned it so that their eyes could meet and kissed her. Scarlett kissed him back, but, after a couple of seconds, pushed him away and slapped him as hard as she could. Nero didn’t say anything. He didn’t even turn back at her. The only thing Nero did was put the back of his hand on the reddened skin.

“How…could….” Scarlett sigh. “How could you do such a thing to me? To her?!”

Nero put his hand down, but still didn’t turn to her.

“I’m sorry.”

“You’re sorry? How could you do that to someone who loves you this much?”

Nero turned to Scarlett unsure of who she was referring to.

“I think… I think I should go home.” Nero said as he turned around to grab his bag.

“Nero, wait. Don’t go.”

“No I... I can't stay… it’s… it’s not right.”

Nero picked up his bag and stormed out of Scarlett’s room.

“You’re not staying for dinner, Nero?” asked Scarlett’s mother folding her body backwards to look at him.

“Ngh! No, sorry. I forgot something in the university. I have to go back and get it before the close down the campus for the night.” He lied, his voice trembling.

“Won't you come back?”

“I... can't. Maybe some other time?”

“Alright sweetheart. Take care, say ‘hi’ to your mom.”

“I will, thank you.”

Nero opened the door and ran out. When he reached his, small, red sports car, he rested his arm on the door and put his hand over his face.

“Damn it!” he angrily exclaimed as he slammed the side of his fist, in which he held his keys, against the roof.

“Poor kid.” Said a man behind him as he put his hand against Nero’s car. The man grabbed Nero’s face with his other hand and turned it to face his own. “What happened? Did you get rejected?”

“Get off!” screamed Nero and pushed him away.

"What's the matter? I'm just trying to be nice...."

The man took a step closer, pushed Nero's body against the car, then pushed his own body against him. Nero tried to get him off, but the man grabbed his hands and punched him as hard as he could.

"Don't worry, kid. After today I promise you that you'll never see her again." The man said as he watched Nero try to stand up.

Nero threw his body back and aimed a punch at the man's face, but the man grabbed him by the wrist and slammed Nero's face against the car's window. The man watched him trying to get up while letting out a grunt of pain. As the man started laughing, a truck pulled over.

“Nero!” screamed Scarlett. She started running toward them, but another man stopped her. “Get off of me! Nero!!”

“Scarlett…” he muttered .

The man kicked Nero down one more time before breaking down in laughter. Scarlett started kicking and struggling to break free, but all her efforts were useless. The man lifted her body and threw her to the side. Scarlett let out a scream as she landed on the concrete.

“Don’t touch her!” screamed Nero as he quickly stood up and ran toward her.

A man stopped Nero and punched him. After Nero landed on the floor, three men started to beat him up, trying to weaken him. Scarlett stood up, but the man pointed a gun at her and told her to stay where she was. The girl directed her eyes to Nero noticing his scared look when he saw the gun. A man opened the door to the truck, jumped down, lifted Nero from his armpits and began to carry him to the inside of the truck.

“Nero!” screamed Scarlett.

The girl looked around trying to find someone to help him, but she lived in a very isolated area. No one was around and her mother couldn’t hear her, even less help him.

Nero kicked one of the men and started fighting his way out, but he was over powered. The five men jumped in the truck, including the one that pointed a gun at Scarlett, and pulled him in.

“Scarlett! Scarlett!”

Scarlett started running toward the truck, but the door closed and it drove away. She continued running, but, after a couple of seconds, she dropped to her knees, tears running down her cheeks.  He was gone.
