A couple of days went by.  Though he was quite professional in his work, he still was not fully present mentally; Alex had occupied his mind.  As soon as he had gotten off the airplane six days later, his first call was to Alex, but all he got was voicemail.  His first and only stop was at his father’s estate.  By the time the taxi arrived, night had already fallen.  He entered the house and dropped his luggage below the flight of stairs.

There were a couple of hired help walking about; some were caterers, florists and cleaners.  He made his way to the back of the house.  There, on the vast lawn were about eight large white tents and underneath were at least five tables encircled by chairs.  His father was making preparations for a function to take place some time  later in the evening.

He stopped one of the housemaids that was passing by. “Excuse me, is my father here?”

“He’s in his study.  Should I tell him you’re here?”

“Um, yes.  Just let him know I’ve arrived.  Tell him I’ll be in my room, I will see him later.  Until then, I want to be alone.”

“Yes, Sir,” she said and walked away.

Michael turned back to the yard and tried calling Alex again.  The voicemail prompt came on.  He sighed heavily. “Look, Alex, this makes it my seventh message in four hours.  If you’re trying to frustrate me, then it’s working.  Please, call me.” One of the caterers was passing by with a trolley of alcoholic drinks. “Hey, wait, hold on.”  He then grabbed a bottle of cognac and walked away.  He got to the stairs, picked up his bags and headed to his room.

Two hours later, the guests began pouring in.  Mr. Petrovskii and Sasha were present of course. The function was quite formal; the men were in tuxedos and women in gowns.  Although he greeted the arriving guests, he did not bother finding himself a seat, instead, he stood at the bottom of the steps that lead to the dinner party, with a glass of brandy in his hand.

“If I wanted an extra usher, I would have hired one.”

Michael did not bother look to his father’s direction. “I don’t feel much like company.  I’m just showing face.”

“I haven’t seen you in a week.”

“Won’t be the first time.”

“Yes, but you’re in my house.  The least you could do was make yourself known.”

“Didn’t the help inform you?”  He sipped his drink.  He was yet to look at the man.

“Michael,”

“Dad, please, I have a lot on my mind right now.  I can’t handle you on my back, I can’t handle this function.  Period.”

“Whatever’s on your mind, does it have to do with Ms. Petrovskii?”  Michael glanced over his father’s shoulder at Sasha.  She was sitting at her table talking and laughing. His father continued, “I’m not talking about that one. I was referring to her.”

Michael followed his father’s gaze to the top of the steps.  All went silent in his head.  It was Alex!  She was dressed for the occasion; a beautiful plum chiffon dress.  He watched, speechless, as she made her way to him.  By the time she got there, his father was already gone.

“Hi,” She greeted.

He was in a trance.  All frustrations he felt before had mysteriously disappeared. “Hi,”

“How was your trip?” she asked.

Michael kept staring at her. “I don’t want to talk about work.”

He held her hand and walked away, about two hundred feet from the party, behind a tree, away from the lights.  He gently laid his hand on her neck and his lips on hers.  It was a passionate kiss of longing and wanting. She too fell deep into the embrace; she laid her hands on his sides.

He opened his eyes and looked down at her. “I didn’t expect to see you here tonight.”

“Well, I’ll tell you; I wasn’t coming.  I was invited, but I really didn’t feel like mingling.”

“But you knew I’d be here.”

“Yes.”

He stayed quiet for a moment.  By the expression on his face, he didn’t know what that response meant. “Well, I’m glad you changed your mind.  I missed you.  Why haven’t you been taking my calls?”

Her eyes pierced his. “I needed some time to think.” She stopped him before he could answer. “Everything inside of me is saying that this thing we have going is a bad idea; my mind is telling me no, to stay clear from you….. but my heart….”

Michael felt her right cheek. “Just tell me what you want and we’ll work from there.”

Alex gathered her thoughts. “You haven’t given me any reason not to trust you….. but Papa thinks-”

“Alex, please, just tell me what you want.  We’re going to come to conclusion here tonight; whether I like it or not; you’re going to give me a straight answer.  You told me the last time we were together that you don’t like complications.  I stand by that too.  I don’t like complications either or arguments.”  He laid his finger under her chin and made her look at him. “I’ll let you in on a little secret about myself; this is the first time I’ve tried so damn hard to keep a woman.  Any other person I’d brush her off, because I don’t need the headache.  I literally don’t need the headache.  But you mean so much to me.  I need to let you see that what we have here is a good thing.  We can go far with this.  So you let me know right now, if we see where this leads us or end it now just because your father said so.”

Alex gently glided her palms on his chest. “It’s not just my father.  I have this gut feeling…”

Michael suddenly shut her up by kissing her.  He held her arms and pulled her onto him.  She accepted.  He then touched her cheek once more and kissed her forehead. “You worry too much.  I don’t want to talk about this anymore.  We won’t promise anything.  We’ll just go with the flow.  How’s that?”

“No promises?”

He kissed her left palm. “Do you like what we have?”

“Yes,”

“Then that’s all that matters.  To hell with everyone else.  I need you to trust me.  Can you do that? Please,”

Michael kissed her once more.  His hands felt her bare back down to her waist.  Her arms were wrapped around his shoulders.

“I missed you,” She confessed.

His left had slipped to her butt while the other grabbed at her thigh. “I want you.” He admitted whilst nibbling at her ear.

Moments later, they were waking their way up the back stairs and into the spacious house.  He pulled her closer and landed her yet another wet kiss.  He held her hand as they ran up the staircase destined for his room.  Sasha then appeared at the bottom of the stairs watching as they disappeared at the very top.  She was not at all amused.
