He hadn't slept well last night, and he was already tired as his eyes shifted in direction on the clock on the wall of the room he was working. It wasn't even yet 1 in the afternoon and he just couldn't wait to leave the office. Unfortunately, he had cases he needed to work on and even though he had to, his mind wasn't capable of focusing on the cases.

"Michael? You didn't join us for lunch?" A co-worker sat on the corner of his desk, intrigued by his absence during lunchtime at the restaurant across the street.

"No, I didn't sleep well last night and I wasn't in the mood to join you guys... If you don't mind me, I got some work to do!" He rudely told his co-worker that he had work to do, which wasn't in his habits. He was or almost never rude with his co-workers around the place.

"Geez, I can tell you're lacking sleep... What happened?" Michael shifted his blue eyes in the direction of Andrew before sighing loudly.

"You don't wanna know, it's complicated..." Andrew tilted his head and smirked when Michael announced to him that it was complicated.

"Tell me if I'm wrong, but you did seem to be on cloud nine during the whole week, but not today... Did you get dump old man?" Michael was running out of patience with  Andrew who wanted to squeeze the facts out of him. Not only Andrew wasn't minding his own business, but that stupid little smirk on his face was getting on Michael's nerves.

"Ok, listen to me Andrew, my private life isn't any of your concerns, hope I've made myself clear... And get down from my desk!!"  When Andrew realized that Michael wasn't in the mood for jokes, he decided to leave him alone and returned back to his desk to work on his cases as well.

Michael returned his eyes on the computer screen and he decided that he'd go out for a bit and return to work after. Michelle had told him about her dance studio last week, and he did remember where it was located in the city. He was aware that she was spending most of her afternoons in there and he had in mind to pay her a visit, he doubted that she would try to avoid him since she was probably giving lessons or something of that sort. He looked back at the clock on the wall, it was only 1:15 PM.

"Alright, I'm out for an hour, I'm going to get something to eat..." He said to one of his co-workers before snatching his navy blue Jacket suit...

*************************

He drove for 10 minutes before spotting the small building in which Michelle's Studio was. He parked his unmarked police car in the appropriate parking space and stepped out of the vehicle. Even though he was 53 years old, Michael was a bit anxious, not really knowing how she would react toward his presence. He slowly entered by the main entrance and could hear the muffled music coming from one of the rooms located in the building. He carefully approached that room, only to realize that the door was closed, but he could see what was going on inside by peeking through the small window next to the door, and Michelle wasn't in there.

He frowned his eyebrows, wondering if he was at the right place. He decided to push the door, getting all the women's eyes locked on him. The female instructor raised an eyebrow at him before pausing the dance music.

"Do you need help Sir?" The instructor looked up at Michael, and the man asked if he was at the right place.

"Yea... I'm sorry to interrupt you ladies, I'm wondering if I'm in the right place. I'm looking for Michelle Edwards, does it ring a bell?" The female instructor gulped and demanded Michael to follow her in the hall where they would discuss in private.

"That won't be long ladies, I'll be back in a few." Michael followed the woman back to the hall, wondering what was going on, he could tell that there was something wrong by the tone of her voice.

"I'm her neighbor by the way." The lady nodded at Michael and fidgetted with her hands before beginning.

"I received a call from the hospital this morning... Apparently, Michelle received a call from her friend in the middle of the night, asking her to come to pick her up at some place because she was afraid by her boyfriend who was probably high on something."

"What happened to her!!" Michael was running out of patience, knowing well that something had happened to his young neighbor and he wanted to know it right away. The woman quickly went straight to the point, sparing Michael of the last details.

"The man spotted Michelle waiting for Sarah, her friend and as he grabbed Sarah by the hair, Michelle tried to defend her but he beat her. The doctor told me that she's got broken ribs, a broken leg, and a fractured wrist as well. She's fine though, but as you could guess, she's badly injured, I've tried to talk to her, but I was informed that she's on pain killers  due to the pain and the stress she's having right now..."

Michael had his hands on his hips, feeling a deep rage building in him as someone dared to attack Michelle. Even though she was just his neighbor, he had gotten attached to her during the last 3 weeks, he could even say that he was very fond of her.

"She's at the Alta Bates Summit Medical Cen.." The female instructor didn't even have the time to finish her sentence that Michael had already left the building to get back in his car. He rapidly drove through the city to reach the medical facility where Michelle was since last night. He had a feeling his night would be long, he'd make sure to find out that guy going out with Sarah. He didn't know who was this Sarah, but he'd ask Michelle and do his little investigation, it was just a matter of time before he'd punch this guy in the throat.

He arrived at the hospital and rapidly strolled toward the information booth. There was a lady with a rude look on her face behind the glass.

"Hi, I'm looking for Michelle Edwards, she's 28 years old and was admitted last night..." The old woman looked up at Michael, almost expressing how he was bothering her.

"Only relatives are authorized to see her. Are you related to her?" He sighed and decided to show her his police detective badge, sticking it on the glass.

"I'm not, but I'm her neighbor and I'm a cop! I have a job to do." Not wanting to waste her precious time with the police detective, the woman behind the glass in the booth finally revealed Michael where Michelle was located.

"Second floor, room # 210..."

"Thank you!" He thanked her, even though he thought she was a frustrated old woman who should probably work somewhere else. Michael didn't even take the elevators, he climbed up the staircase with his long legs, reaching the second floor in no time. The next thing he knew, he was standing under the doorframe of Michelle's room. She was sleeping deeply and a nurse was checking on her, writing down notes.

The nurse looked up at him before speaking to Michael.

"You can come in sir, she's sleeping since the surgery, but we'll try to wake her up for dinner time." Michael looked down at his watch and realized it was already 2:36. He should have been back to his office by now, but he couldn't care less.

"What surgery?" Michael was totally shaken by what he was seeing. She even had stitches on her forehead...

"Her tibia had several fractures and she needed surgery. She's fine though, she's quite of a strong little woman... Is she your daughter?" Michael who had his eyes glued on the sleeping woman hadn't heard the nurse's question.

"Sir? is she your daughter?" Michael finally switched his attention to the nurse after she repeated her question.

"Kind of..." The nurse pulled down the sheet from Michelle body a bit since her temperature had risen a bit before lunchtime.

"We're trying to find someone who could bring her back home, her family is located in Boston, and we didn't know who to reach at this point. Would you know if she has friends or perhaps a relative in town that could help her?" Michael stuffed his hands in his pocket before pushing the inside of his cheek with his tongue.

"I'll take care of her." The nurse gave Michael a quick smile before covering Michelle's tiny cold feet with the sheet.

"We'll keep her for the night though, her temperature has been fluctuating this morning, we're not yet sure why and we just want to make sure she'll be ok before leaving. We want to make sure she doesn't have an infection in her leg, or worse in her lungs."

The nurse explained to Michael why they preferred to keep Michelle one more night. It made sense to him, and it was perfect this way because he had plans for tonight and those plans weren't consisting of eating popcorn while watching shows on Netflix...

"Feel free to come back later in the afternoon, she'll probably be awake." Michael nodded at the nurse and approached Michelle, leaning over her, gently touching her forehead with his lips... He slowly stood back to his heigh, ready to leave Michelle's room. He'd come back later, in the meantime, he'd return to the police station and find out about the man that assaulted her. He knew he wouldn't spend the rest of his life in jail and when the time would come, he'd get his hands on this dirty bastard only to give him a taste of his own medicine.

Michael returned to his office, trying to work on his cases, which proved to be hard as he kept thinking about Michelle. He knew he had said the nurse that he'd take care of Michelle, but he wasn't really prepared for this. He was aware that she couldn't be left alone since she would probably be unable to cook for herself with that broken wrist of hers. She also had a broken leg, and it didn't seem she would be able to walk on it without crutches. He sighed while typing a letter on his computer, trying to think about what he could do to help her... Of course, that is if she would accept his help, to begin with. She did seem to be the kind of woman who was really stubborn and way too proud to get the help of a stranger... Especially a stranger she was infatuated with.

"I'm going out for dinner." Michael informed a co-worker that he was going out for dinner time... He wasn't going out dinning, he was returning to the hospital, hoping Michelle was awake. He got himself something from the drive-thru at McDonald's and headed to the hospital to visit Michelle.

When he stepped foot in her room, the young woman was sitting up in her bed, eating jello while watching the TV.

"Can I join you?" He asked her with a friendly expression all over his face, almost begging her with his pair of droopy puppy eyes. She nodded and smirked at him, allowing him to sit next to her on the chair by her bed. He sat down and put the Fast Food bag on the nightstand before pushing up the sleeves of his shirt.

"Still angry at me for discovering your little secret?" She smirked at him, grimacing in pain at the same time as her ribs hurt her while she adjusted herself on the bed.

"I told you, it's more complicated than that..." She added. "And no, I'm not mad at you,  I never was. I was pissed at myself from drawing such an early conclusion..."

"I know, you're longing for a responsible, powerful and stable father-figure in your life, but you're too afraid to admit that to yourself knowing well that saying this to a man would probably scare him, which is why you didn't want me to know. Don't you think I hadn't seen this?"

She snorted as Michael put his finger on the problem. She really had trouble with going out with guys, because most of them weren't comfortable with what she was searching in a man, but Michael didn't mind at all... He was older than her and to be honest he was flattered by the affection she had for him.

"You must think I'm pathetic..." He glanced at her and with a serious gaze on his face, Michael decided to speak with her and explain to her that what she was looking for in a man was more common than she thought.

"I don't think it's pathetic at all, You'd be surprised how many women are looking for this in a man. Now, let's talk about what happened to you!" He knew that Michelle was looking for a father figure and it wasn't something as dramatic as Michelle thought it was. He was more interested in learning who had beaten her down, he was probably caring more about her than he ever thought of... She was laying in that bed with a broken leg and bruises covering half of her body and it was something he couldn't accept. He hoped the person who did this had already been arrested or else Michael would take care of this case by himself. It was hard to admit it, but he liked her and he wanted to be that man that would be there to protect and reassure her when she would feel the need to be.

"I don't remember everything, I don't even remember when I was brought to the hospital by Ambulance. But I know that Sarah called me near 2 in the morning, she wanted me to come to pick her up at this nightclub owned by her boyfriend. She said that her boyfriend was high on something and that she didn't want to go back home with him. When I arrived at the nightclub, I waited for her outside in my car and I saw her emerging out of the nightclub, and he was following her behind. "

Michael listened to her with rapt attention, making sure to miss none of the details described by Michelle.

"The next thing I knew he grabbed her long hair violently and tried to drag her back inside the nightclub, but I intervened, not knowing what would happen to me... He punched me in the ribs and I fell down on the cold pavement. I remember I've tried to protect my head with my arms and I felt one of my wrists breaking under his hits. He then stopped and retrieved something, a steel bar I think and he hit me several times on my leg. Sarah kept screaming at him, ordering to stop or else he'd kill me... I blacked out after this, I couldn't bear the pain anymore. I didn't even know this guy, I've met him once when Sarah brought him to the restaurant before I got fired... I didn't know he was some crazy whacko dude!!"

She dried her tears as the painful memories came back haunting her again...

"His name, what's his name?" Michelle knew what Michael would do, he was a cop detective and she wasn't sure if he had been arrested after she ended up at the hospital.

"Zack Wozniak. He's around 35 I think and I didn't get any news from Sarah since I'm here..." She then grabbed her smartphone from the bedside table, checking again if Sarah had texted her.

"He owns a nightclub called The Maho club, it's nearby the pier." It didn't take long that Michael wrote down on his notepad the crucial information delivered by Michelle.

"Thanks! If he's not already arrested, rest assured that he will be!" He smiled at her and caressed the side of her face with the back of his hand while Michelle had her eyes lost in his. She then shifted her regard in the direction of the brown paper bag and could smell the delicious scent of the McDonald's french fries. She was a bit hungry, she hadn't eaten something since yesterday and wouldn't mind stealing some of Michael's dinner meal.

"What did you bring for dinner?" He chuckled and tousled her short ginger hair as if she was a child before opening the bag.

"Got some McNuggets. Would you like some?" She nodded her head. He shared his meal with her and the next thing he knew, Michelle quickly returned to sleep once the nurse had given her the pain medication she needed in order to control her pain. Just before he left Michelle's room, the nurse informed Michael that her fever was stable and that she would probably be ready to get out tomorrow morning.
