"Okay buddy. Ya ready?" Brian says through the earpiece.

Jim rounds his shoulders and loosens his neck. "Yeah." He scans the grocery store, taking note of each customer. "What time is he supposed to show up?" he mumbles.

"1:30."

Jim grunts and looks at his watch. 10:30. He and his team may have been a little overzealous, but you never know when and where the spotters are placed.

He offered to be the boots on the ground while the other 3 manned the eyes in the sky. He’d much rather be part of the action than crammed in a tight box van, watching the shit go down.

Today, they were arresting The Spade. Notorious kingpin responsible for the droves of heroin flooding the streets, killing countless people. 9 long months of surveillance, gathering enough evidence to put this fucker away for the rest of his life and then some.

"Try the meat department." Eddie's voice chirps over a rash of multiple giggles from his team.

They're giggling. It's not good when they giggle. While they might be the best investigators from the narcotics department, they still fucked with each other any chance they got

"Let’s stay focused, dickheads." he hisses and moseys on over to the meat department, checking out products here and there to look as natural as possible

"Hey. Wait a minute... Jim, isn't that..." Max now takes over with a playful tone. "Isn't that your neighbor?"

"My neighb..." He trails off, searching the area until..."Ah shit."

Harper. The girl whose backyard sits adjacent to his.

He can see right where this is going. The team likes to keep things light during nerve-wracking missions. Testing each other's resolve in playful ways to keep them on their toes. A bit unconventional, but it seems to work so far. Unfortunately, Jim just so happens to be the victim today.

"Why don't you go over and say hi."

Jim's eyes find the nearest camera. "No."

"Go say hi you antisocial piece of shit."

His chest rumbles with an anxious moan. Not Harper. He never should have said anything about her.

He makes his way over to the cooler as she sorts through packs of ground pork.

"Heyyy, Harper." Damn it. He can't even control the quiver in his voice.

The brunette looks up, tucking a lock behind her ear. "Oh. Hey Jim. What's up?"

Fuck. She's so pretty. These assholes are going to have a field day with this.

Brian rattles in his ear. "A chicken's ass when it eats."

Jim rolls his eyes and repeats with the weakest smile he could manage. "A chicken's ass when it eats."

She snorts with a smile, then narrows her eyes at him, noticing him sans shopping cart or basket. “What are you doing here?”

He taps his ear.

Her eyes widen with a slight gasp and lowers her voice. “Oh, you’re working… I shouldn’t be-” she stammers, backing away from him.

“No, it’s O.K.” he says, ignoring the passing thought that he wants to keep her near him for as long as he can. “Keeps me from looking suspicious.”

She eyes him. Unsure of his remark. "Is it safe for me to be here?" She glances around, looking for what he assumes are unsavory characters.

He smirks. "It’s fine. Gonna be a couple hours before the fun starts."

Eddie pipes up. Maybe the fun should start now... unless you want to buy the drinks tomorrow night.

Damn. He never should had agreed to those stipulations when the team formed a few years ago. Playing pranks on each other sounds great when you aren’t the butt of the joke.

Max interrupts. "Boy, Jim. She's awfully pretty, isn't she?"

Jim shoots a look towards a camera and presses his lips together. Of course she is.  And if he agrees those three pricks are going to torture him. But, if he doesn't agree they are going to destroy any chance of her ever speaking to him again.

His eyes never leave the camera. "Mmm-hmm."

"Okay Romeo. Ask her what she's shopping for."

Jim peeks into her basket. "What's on the shopping list?"

She hesitates, not sure where this is going. "Pork. I'm making sauce."

Brian instantly replies. "Tell her she can find better meat at this place you know."

He leans in and whispers to her, taking the pork from her hand and putting it back in the cooler. "You know where you can get a better quality meat?"

Her brows raise, opening her mossy green eyes, waiting for his response.

Max gives him two simple words. "My pants."

He sucks in a breath, trying to find the courage to blurt it out. He's not usually the brazen type and hopefully she’s smart enough to catch on to the cruel game his so called ‘friends’ are trying to play.

She now shifts in agitation, waiting for him. "Out with it now. I know they're telling you what to say."

"My... Pants."

She cracks a smile, eyes rolling to his crotch. "I don't know if it'll be enough."

The roar of laughter in his ear was almost deafening. He sucks on his bottom lip, taking the burn like a man. "I thought you were on my side."

"I am. I didn't slap you, did I?"

"They made me say it."

"We weren't the ones dropping the subtle hints that you've got a thing for your neighbor. That was all you." Brian reminds him.

He shakes his head and mumbles. "I never should have said anything."

Harper cocks her head at him. "Said what?"

Jim waves a hand at her. "No. Not you. Them."

"Okay. Said what to them?"

The lines come through his ear so fast, it almost makes his head spin.

"Tell her that you only helped her move her furniture so you could get a better look at her tits."

"That you watch her sunbathe from your bedroom window."

"That she has the perfect mouth for a blowjob."

His eyes shoot back to the camera. "Are you crazy?"

"Okay. Okay... You don't have to say them all... Just pick one."

He covers his face in embarrassment. "You don't understand..."

"Oh yes we do. If you don't, we’re getting wasted at your expense."

She can see the discomfort in his face. "It's okay. It’s just a joke, right?"

Jim rubs his face, lifting his eyes to the heavens. "God, I wish it was." His face scrunches up as if it physically pains him to speak. "I only helped you move your furniture so I could get closer to you."

Her face softens with a smile. "That's sweet, Jim."

"...and her tits." Max reminds.

His face fills with sorrow and mumbles. "And your..." he motions around his chest. "...tits.”

Her lips part in slight shock.

He quickly places the blame elsewhere. “I am so sorry. They’re animals.”

Your words, you savage.

His heart drops to his stomach when she simply turns back to the cooler. Shit. That crossed the line. She hates him now. She’s never going to speak to him again.

“You told them about helping me move my furniture?” she says, not looking away from the from the meat.

He gulps in a breath. Okay, maybe he still has a shot. “Uhh...yeah. You know, making conversation…”

She peeks at him from the corner of her eye. “And my breasts just so happen to be part of that conversation?”

Sweetheart, if he had the stones, they'd be the whole conversation.”

He growls towards the camera. “Shut up.” Then looks back to her with the sincerest fake smile. “Guy talk… you know.”

“I don’t know ‘Guy Talk’. I’m assuming it’s like ‘Girl Talk’?”

His brow wrinkles. “I suppose…”

“Yeah,” she continues. “Like talking to my friends about my cute neighbor that hops over the fence to help me move furniture.”

Oh Jim! She said you’re cute!”

He feels his cheeks flare as he tries a casual smile. “So… you talk about me too?”

She shrugs. “On occasion.”

Alright, let's get this show rolling. Jim, ask her out.”

His head snaps back to the camera. “What? I'm not going to-”

Ask her out and we'll leave you alone.

He cringes as he looks back to her. “Um… so, you can like, totally say no, but maybe sometime… I could... take you out for a drink… or whatever.”

Her eyes widen as she scrapes her teeth over her bottom lip in. “Wow. They are really roasting you.”

He licks his lips, wondering just how soft hers are. “They're killing me.”

“So if I just say ‘yes’, they’ll get off your back?”

“And I promise I'll leave you alone.”

She shakes her head. “Nonsense. I enjoy your company. I think I just might take you up on that drink.”

Alright! Good job, Jim. You got yourself a date!”

His mouth hooks into a surprised grin. “Really? O… Okay. Uh…” he looks around, remembering he’s supposed to be working. “I, um, have to get back to work, so I guess I'll leave you to your shopping.” He starts to back away, unable to erase the smile.

She waves to him just as he rounds the corner, disappearing from sight. He looks around for prying eyes, finds another camera and flips the guys off. “You thought that was going to backfire on me, didn't you?”

A simple ‘thank you’ would be nice.

He growls under his breath. “Thank you? If you assholes didn’t have such expensive tastes, I would have told you to fuck off from the get go.”

Yeah. A thank you for giving you the balls to finally ask her out.

Jim's face turns up. “I was gonna ask her out eventually.”

***Ok. Yes, another Jai Courtney fanfic. I can't help myself. This one is based off a character in the movie 'Felony' with Joel Edgerton. Honestly, it's a really great movie (Even if Jai wasn't in it). Kinda hard to find here in the States because it's an Australian movie, but you might be able to find it through a streaming service.

This story takes place a few years after the events in the movie and I might drop a few subtle hints that will refer to it, but nothing to spoil it if you choose to seek it out and watch it. Hope you all enjoy!
