When Lacey woke up the next morning, her head felt like a marching band was stomping through it and she had never felt so sick in her life. She couldn’t remember getting into bed and sighed with relief when she realised she was still fully dressed. Yawning, she gazed up at the ceiling, wondering what the day ahead was going to bring. The sound of paper rustling made her aware someone was in the room, she sat up and could see Evan sitting on the sofa reading a newspaper. He looked relaxed with the two top buttons of his shirt open and the sleeves rolled up. He noticed that she was awake and put the newspaper on the side table. Lacey lay down and turned her back to him.

Evan sat next to her on the bed and tried to roll her around to face him, “Lacey, why did you drink so much last night, you could have made yourself ill?”

“What do you care!” She yanked herself away from him.

Evan’s jaw clenched. “What’s wrong with you now?”

“What’s wrong with me?” She spun around to face him. “I’m angry. Angry with myself, angry with my life and angry with You!” she cried.

Evan could see the coldness in her eyes, he knew he was going to have to deal with one of her outbursts again and he wasn’t used to situations like that. He needed to get out of the room before it escalated. “Ok.” he said as he climbed off the bed. “Get yourself washed and dressed and we will talk about this later.”

Evan stood by the side of the bed in silence, chewing the inside of his mouth before leaving the room. Lacey dropped back on the bed wishing she could just keep her big mouth shut. The way Evan had just looked at her before leaving the room, she thought maybe she had pushed him a little too far by losing her temper so early in the morning.

Lacey sorted herself out a clean t-shirt and underwear and went into the en suit bathroom. Noticing there wasn’t a lock on the door, she wedged her trainers underneath. If Evan came back and tried to walk in, hopefully it would make it harder for him to open it.

Stepping under the shower, Lacey slowly turned around letting the powerful jets of water massage her body. Forgetting to take in the shower gel that Evan had bought her, she used his. The strong musk scent of Evan’s shower gel reminded her of the first night she had met him in the alley. Lacey dropped her head back and began to wash her hair, she felt like she was in heaven, it was a million times better than having a lukewarm bath at Margret’s.

Feeling a lot better after her shower, Lacey dried her hair, the best she could with a towel, she slipped on Evans robe and rolled herself a cigarette and leaned out of the bedroom window to smoke it. Gazing across the gardens, she began to wonder, if she died would anyone miss her. There was no one in her life that bothered about her, only Jack, he would miss her.

Many times, since her mother died she had felt depressed about her life but always carried on regardless. Everyone she knew saw her as someone strong that could handle whatever life threw at her, but they didn’t see the tears she sometimes cried over it. She could always handle any situation that came her way but the one she was in right now was scaring her, she wasn’t in control of her own life anymore. Lacey slapped herself across her face, to snap herself out of the low mood she was in. She needed to pull herself together and stop feeling sorry for herself. The sooner she paid the debt off, the sooner she could leave.

Evan came back to the bedroom, carrying a tray of food and some bottled water for her. “Can we talk now?” he asked placing the tray on the bedside cabinet.

Lacey held on tight to her gown and sat on the edge of the bed. The smell the food made her feel sick, she opened the bottled water and sipped it.

Evan sat next to her and sighed. “Lacey, I don’t want you to hate your life anymore. I want you to enjoy it and make the most of what you have here.”

Lacey shook her head and laughed. “You really don’t understand anything do you Evan?”

He scratched the back of his head wondering what the hell she was on about. “Understand what?

“I don’t want to enjoy myself here, I just want to go home.”

“Home!” he cried standing up and throwing his arms in the air. “For fucks sake you live on the streets, how can you call that home?”

Lacey could feel her anger burning up again. “You take over my life with a debt that I supposed to owe you, when it is paid I will return to the street. I guess I’ll have to dress up like Racheal for you, but hey, what the fuck. Don’t all whores do that for you because that’s all I am now? So, if I hate my life it’s because of you!” She screamed.

Evan’s breathing deepened, his fists clenched as he slowly stood up. He kicked the bedside cupboard repeatedly, smashing it into pieces. Lacey dived across the bed to try and get away, she thought that he was going to hit her. She screamed when he grabbed her by her legs and pulled her back towards him. Her gown fell open as she twisted herself around and slapped him hard across the face.

Evan grabbed her wrists and held her hands above her head then sat on her, he leaned over her. “You’re not a whore, do you want me to treat you like one, we can start right now if you want to?” He held her wrists with one hand and began to unzip his trousers.

Lacey screamed and struggled. “No Evan please I’m sorry!” she arched her body tying to move him off her.

Evan climbed off her and threw his head back in frustration. “You’re fucking driving me insane Lacey, calm yourself down and I’ll see you later.” He stormed out of the bedroom punching everything in his way.

Lacey lay on the bed sobbing; she could hear him smashing things downstairs. Evan had scared her then. Her body shook as she climbed off the bed and began to pick the food up off the floor. She noticed a gun in the pile of broken cabinet that must have been inside it. Picking it up with the tips of her fingers, she took it across the room and put it in another cupboard out of the way. Her heart raced as images of waking up in the middle of the night with it pointing at her head flashed through her mind.

After a short while the housekeeper came into the bedroom with a man to remove the broken cabinet. Before they left, the housekeeper took all the alcohol out of the cabinet. Lacey sat on the sofa watching them in silence they never spoke to her apart from hello and goodbye.

Evan didn’t come back to let her know what she should be doing so she decided to stay in the bedroom, out of the way. Lacey sat in the bedroom for the rest of the day on her own. By the night time, no one had bought her any food, she was hungry but didn’t go downstairs to ask for some. She’d rather starve than ask for anything.

The next morning when Lacey woke, she had another shower and spent some time in the walk-in wardrobe. Lacey had never used a hairdryer before, the powerful gush of hot air burning her head scared her a little. After fiddling around with it she realised she could turn the power of it down. Out of boredom she played around with the makeup and plastered it on to look like the women she had seen at the restaurant. Disgusted with the way she looked she cleaned it off and re applied it the way she liked it, natural. Dressing in the same jeans she wore the day before and putting on a clean t-shirt, her stomach began to rumble, she was starving now but there was no way she was going to ask for anything to eat.

It was late afternoon when Evan came to the bedroom, he didn’t speak, he just took hold of her arm and marched her downstairs to the patio and pushed her onto a chair. They sat in awkward silence until the housekeeper came out with some food for them both.

“Now are you going to stop being so stubborn and have something to eat?” Evan asked.

Lacey stared at the chicken, salad and baked potato smothered with butter and cheese, she wanted to refuse it just to piss him off, but she was too hungry didn’t want another argument like the day before. They both sat in silence eating, Lacey had been in some uncomfortable situations before but nothing as uncomfortable as what she was feeling right then.

Evan finally broke the silence. “Lacey, you have made it quite clear that you want to leave but you are not leaving here until the debt is paid, do you understand?”

Tears welled in Lacey’s eyes, she nodded her head.

Evan passed her a cigarette and relaxed back in his chair. “I understand living here will be hard for you, but I’m sure you will eventually enjoy what is on offer here.”

Tears rolled down Lacey’s face. “I’ll do what you want so I can just go home but like I’ve already told you, I won’t enjoy it here.” She excused herself and returned to the bedroom for the rest of the day.

Living at Evans house was totally the opposite of what Lacey was used to, she knew it was going to be hard for her. Most girls would have jumped to the chance live of living with Evan but Lacey thought were all silly materialistic idiots. But what she couldn’t quite understand was, why Evan wanted her to stay in his house with him when he could have had chosen girls that had more to offer than she had. Why did she have to pay him for Rachael’s loss of earnings? It’s not like he needed the money.

When it was time to get herself ready for the evening meal Lacey really didn’t know what to do or wear, she had only ever dressed up once before. In the walk-in wardrobe, she sorted through the dresses, a deep blue silky one caught her eye. A little wave of excitement ran through her body when she remembered how sexy she felt dressing up at the restaurant.

After brushing her hair and putting her make up on she slowly began to feel good about herself. Slipping her stockings on and the blue figure hugging dress, she found some black high heeled shoes. Standing in front of the mirror and checking herself from all angles, she barely recognised herself and once again she was shocked with how sexy she felt.

Lacey jumped a little when she noticed Evan standing in the doorway watching her. With the way, he was looking at her she suddenly felt a mixture of nerves and excitement. He walked across to her and turned her to face the mirror, he moved her hair around to straighten it. She Shuddered at the warmth of his hands resting on her waist. “You look stunning.” He smiled.

Their eyes met in the mirror, Lacey felt her cheeks burn and looked down at the floor. Evan gently placed his finger under her chin and raised her face. “Keep your chin up, it shows confidence and always thank a compliment.”

Lacey took a deep breath and forced a smile. “Thank you Evan.”

Evan laughed and shook his head, she sounded more sarcastic than genuine with her thank you. “Come on, our meal is ready.”

When they left the room, Lacey paused at the top of the stairs, she thought she would fall on them with her heels on. Evan held his hand out to her and walked down the stairs with her. In the dining room, he made her smile when he pulled a chair out for her, he was behaving like a gentleman.

The housekeeper brought them soup for starters, they drank wine while they ate steak with steamed vegetables. Evan watched Lacey as she ate the home-made strawberry ice cream for dessert, she closed her eyes with every spoonful savouring the taste of it.

When they finished eating they stayed at the table for a while and talked just like they did the night at the restaurant. Evan loved the way she disagreed with him on many subjects sometimes he was just disagreeing with her to wind her up to watch her reaction, he had never laughed so much in a long time.

Evan’s heart sunk when Lacey began talking about her job washing the dishes at the restaurant, she asked him to make sure Mike would give her the job back when she left. Evan wanted to just grab her and shake her head off her shoulders, there was more to her than washing dishes. Just to keep the peace, he told her not to worry, she would still have her job there but was hoping by the time he had finished with her she would not want to go back.

So I guess he's trying to be as nice as possible if he wants her to stay after her debits paid. Maybe even fall in love with him. I'm guessing way down the road her friend from the streets will finally fine her, and she won't want to leave. Then maybe when Evan has head over hills for him that's when he's gonna start being mean or rough with her. Sorry I like to guess where a stories going. A lot of time I don't even know where mine are going, even if I do plan them out. glad their getting along again talking like that night at the bar! I don't what her to be totally miserable, but I also want her to be oK.

I feel bad for the poor thing, but as easy as it is to set Evan off he does seem to have some strong control, maybe not feelings but something keeps him behaving sort of around her.

Well he's pretty much the nicest bad guy ever haha. One tiny critique... maybe it's just me but do you use "then" a whole lot. Just something I've been noticing but it certainly doesn't take away from the story.
