Evan parked outside Lacey’s dad’s house; the two-hour drive from the hotel to Peter’s had been in unbearable silence. Earlier that morning, Evan had asked Lacey what she thought about moving to Spain to live in the six-bedroomed villa that he’d inherited from his father. All the way home, Lacey hadn’t spoken a word to him; she’d just stared out of the window. Halfway through the journey, she’d phoned her dad and asked if she could visit him. Evan was relieved when Peter said she could join them for Sunday dinner; he needed her out of the house because he’d got his meeting with Ralph at one pm.

Evan glanced at his watch; it was eleven am. “I’ll get Mart to pick you up at six pm; is that ok?” He asked reaching towards the back seat to get Lacey’s handbag.

“Ok,” Lacey mumbled taking her handbag from him and shuffling to her side to open the car door.

“Lacey,” Evan said holding her arm. “Please, look at me.”

“What?” Lacey sighed turning to face him.

“Please don’t be like this with me,” Evan half smiled.

“What do you want me to be like?” Lacey stared at him in disbelief; tears welled in her eyes. “I’ve only just met my family and you want to take me a million miles away from them.”

“Spain isn’t a million miles away,” Evan choked a little laugh.

“It’s not funny!” Lacey snapped glaring at him.

“I know it’s not,” Evan sighed gently stroking her arm. “Wouldn’t you like to raise the girls in a warm climate with an outdoor swimming pool and orange trees growing in the garden?”

“That sounds great, but,” Lacey paused shaking her head. “I’ve only just settled in the first proper home I’ve had in my life; I’ve got family now and.”

“I understand,” Evan interrupted. “But we have our own private jet, so it won’t cost your family anything to visit us, and they’re welcome to come and stay any time they want; they’re my family now too.”

Lacey suspiciously looked at him. “You seem eager to leave the country; what’s going on?”

Evan stared at her for what seemed like forever. “Ok,” he said taking a deep breath. “I’m not going to feel comfortable living in this country when I sell everything and retire. I need a fresh start; I just want to live a normal life with you and our daughters, without having to keep looking over my shoulder. I will still have enemies.”

“Why didn’t you tell me that, this morning?” Lacey sighed slumping in her seat.

“I don’t know,” Evan shrugged. “I guess I didn’t want you to worry."

Lacey gazed at the man who was about to give up everything for her; he looked sad. Suddenly feeling selfish, she leaned forward and cupped the side of his face. “You’ve done so much for me, and I’ve given you nothing in return, I.”

“You’ve given me more than you know,” Evan interrupted. “I don’t think you realize how lost I was after my father was murdered.” He gently smiled. “You came into my life and gave me a reason to live.” He paused stroking her baby bump. “There are no words to express how much love I feel for you and my daughters. I’ll do anything to make you happy and keep you safe.”

“Ok, we’ll move to Spain.” Lacey laughed. “But on one condition.”

Evan felt like his heart was going to burst with happiness. “What’s that?” he beamed.

“That we leave after Christmas,” She gently smiled. “I want to spend Christmas with our family and friends.”

“Ok,” Evan beamed wrapping his arm around her and pulling her closer to him. “Ask your family if they would like to join us for Christmas dinner and if they agree to come, then you can talk to Maud about arranging it for us.”

“Ok, I will,” Lacey shuddered with excitement, noticing her dad standing in the doorway next to a short plump grey-haired woman. She recognized the woman from the photos her dad had shown her; it was her nanna. “I’d better go,” she said quickly kissing him on the lips, and turned to open the car door. “I can’t wait to meet my nanna,” she said scrambling out of the car. “I’ll see you later.” She beamed as she rushed away.

Evan watched Lacey rushing down the garden path towards her dad’s house. Her nanna had the biggest smile on her face as she held her arms out to Lacey. Lacey threw her arms around her nanna and hugged her. Peter waved to Evan as they all entered the house.

Evan reached for his mobile and rolled his head to ease the tension in his neck as he scrolled for Ralph’s number and pressed dial. Ralph’s mobile went straight to voice message. “Ralph,” he chirpily spoke. I’m back in Regis now, make sure you’re at mine at one pm to sign the paperwork. I’ve got a busy day ahead, so don’t be late,” he said cutting the call. “Bastard.” He muttered as he began to drive home.

Damian nervously chewed his lip as he stood on his balcony, watching two of Evan’s black Mercedes slowly drive into the car park. Rob stepped out of one of the cars; he glanced up at the balcony and gestured for him to go to him. Taking a shaky deep breath, he reached for his jacket and slipped it on. His body began to shake as he made his way towards the door; playing both sides was a dangerous game, but he wanted to live. All he had to do was, pick up McKenna from his hotel at 1 pm, drive him to Evan’s house, and wait for Ralph to message them that everything had been signed over to him. After McKenna had shot and killed Evan and Lacey, he was to drive him back home to Scotland. When he’d told Rob about the plan, Rob suggested he drove McKenna in one of Evan’s Mercedes; he didn’t understand why he had to do that.

Breathing in the cold fresh autumn air as he left the apartment block, he glanced across the car park at Rob who was talking to Mart. “Rob,” he called. “So, what’s going on today?” he spoke as casually as he could.

“Just drive McKenna to Evan’s as planned,” Rob answered coldly staring at him. “Drive him along Moss Lane,” he ordered holding out the car keys towards him.

“Why Moss Lane, that’s the long route?” Damian asked taking the car keys from him.

“A mile into Moss Lane, you’ll come across roadworks; we’ll be there waiting for you,” Rob answered walking around the car Mart was in.

“Why am I driving McKenna around in Evan’s car?” Damian asked nervously licking his lips.

“Because I know McKenna,” Rob said opening the passenger door. “He’ll get a thrill being driven around in the car owned by the man he’s going to kill.”  He grinned sliding into the car; the window slowly opened. “Hey Damian!” he called.

“What?” Damian nervously asked.

“Don’t look so worried; it’ll all be over soon.” Rob laughed as Mart began to reverse out of the car park.

Damian puffed his cheeks and rubbed his forehead as he watched Rob and Mart drive away; he just wanted the day to be over. When it was, he planned to leave the country; he didn’t want to face his brother.

Evan glanced at his watch when he noticed Ralph's black Porsche approaching his house; it was 12.55 pm. “Asshole,” he growled making his way towards the desk. Sitting on his black leather chair, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath to try and keep himself calm; he had to be as casual as he could, otherwise, Ralph would suspect something was wrong.

The door gently knocked, and Maud entered. “Evan,” she smiled. “Ralph’s arrived.” She said as Ralph followed her into the office.

“Ralph,” Evan beamed standing up and holding his hand out to him. “It’s good to see you.”

“You too,” Ralph smiled as he leaned over the desk and shook Evan’s hand. “Where have you been the past week?”

“I’ve been staying at the hotel I bought,” Evan answered gesturing for Ralph to sit. “I have some great news to tell you.”

“What is it?” Ralph asked sitting opposite Evan.

“Lacey and I were married yesterday,” Evan beamed sitting in his chair.

“Oh!” Ralph's brows raised with surprise. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you,” Evan’s heart angrily thudded as he straightened the paperwork on his desk.

“Is that the paperwork you need me to sign?” Ralph asked leaning forward as he took a pen out of his jacket pocket.

“Yes,” Evan nodded, “But before we sign anything, would you like a drink?”

“Whiskey please,” Ralph answered looking down at his bleeping mobile; it was a message from McKenna, telling him that Damian had picked him up and he was on his way.

“Is everything ok?” Evan asked as he poured them both a whiskey.

“Yes,” Ralph answered awkwardly shuffling in his seat.

Evan passed Ralph his drink; his heart angrily thudded as he tried his best to relax as he sat in his chair. Taking a sip of his whiskey, he glanced at his mobile; he was waiting for Rob to phone him to let him know he was clear to continue with his plan. Taking another sip of his drink, he reached for the paperwork in front of him. Noticing Ralph leaning forward; he knew he was eager to sign. Resting back in his chair, he shook his head and huffed a little laugh; he could see Ralph was agitated. “We’ve been through so much together over the years, haven’t we?”

“We certainly have,” Ralph agreed.

“I remember when we became partners,” Evan stared across the desk. “Jim wasn’t that happy about it.”

“Why?” Ralph curiously asked as he lit a cigar.

“Because he didn’t like you, he said you were a,” Evan paused raising his hands to air quote. “Wannabe gangster,” he laughed shaking his head. “He didn’t understand why someone who’d inherited millions from his dead father would want to work with us.”

“Then why did you agree to work with me?” Ralph growled awkwardly shuffling in his seat.

“To piss my father off; I knew he didn’t like you.” Evan grinned. “In fact, no one liked you.”

Ralph’s jaw clenched as he glared across the desk at Evan.

“But,” Evan paused reaching for his cigarettes. “We knew if we put our money with yours, we could make a fortune, which we did.”

“Then it worked out well for all of us, didn’t it?” Ralph forced a smile as he glanced at the clock on the wall; it was now 1.20 pm. He needed to sign the paperwork before McKenna arrived.

“It certainly did,” Evan forced a smile as he sat forward and reached for a pen. “And now you’re buying me out for fifty million.” He paused, hovering the pen over the paperwork. “Have I told you me and Lacey are moving to Spain in the new year?”

“No,” Ralph answered leaning forward with his pen. “Where is Lacey, I didn’t see her when I came in?”

“She’s visiting her father,” Evan grinned. “I know you get agitated when she disturbs us.”

“That’s nice,” Ralph forced a smile thinking he only needed Evan dead. “Are you ready to sign now?” he asked gesturing to Evan to sign the paperwork, knowing McKenna should be arriving soon.

Rob and Mart were parked on a dirt track just off Moss Lane. Rob was watching Evan’s car tracker on his mobile. “They’ll be passing any second.” he grinned gazing at the green fields surrounding them. The black Mercedes that Damian was driving McKenna to Evan’s house, sped past them. Rob and Mart glanced at each other and grinned. “Any second now,” Mart laughed.

The booming sound of an explosion echoed through the countryside as the car Damian was driving, exploded into flames. Mart started the engine, dirt spattered under the tires as he sped out off the dirt road. Rob dialed Evan’s mobile number to let him know that Damian and McKenna were gone.
