Lacey’s heart felt like it had exploded in her chest, she felt faint, she took a step back to steady herself.

Mike nudged her in her back. “Serve the drinks.” He whispered, he gently put his hand on her back and walked with her to the table. The man’s eyes followed her all the way, his facial expression didn’t change, there was no sign that he had recognised her

Lacey broke eye contact with him and walked around the table serving their drinks. Her hand shook when she passed the man his drink.

“My apologies Mr. Durber.” Mike nervously spoke. “I know you’re aware Donna’s a new girl and little nervous. Would you like me to find you one with more experience?”

Evan Durber didn’t answer he just dismissed Mike with a wave of his hand.

For the next couple of hours, Lacey served drinks to their table. She knew now that the man with the gun’s name was Evan Durber. The only time he spoke to her was when he wanted another drink, she liked his manners, he always said please and thank you. His friends were also very polite but every now and again one of them would have a grope of her backside when she served them and she would smile the best she could. They didn’t seem as bad as the men with the other girls, they were lechers. She felt quite lucky that she was serving their table.

Lacey had begun to relax a little even though it felt like Evan was watching her every move. She thought maybe he was watching her because she was a new. There was no way he would recognise her from two nights ago, she looked totally different and if he had, surely he would have said something by now.

At just gone ten, Lacey’s situation suddenly changed, while she was serving them another drink she heard them talking about Rachael. Evan was supposed to go and meet her at ten and one of his friends was advising him against it and said she was bitch that would cause him problems. Lacey found the conversation amusing, so Evan was Rachael’s important date that night, she tried her hardest not to laugh when his friend called her a bitch but failed and Evan had noticed. She placed Evan’s drink in front of him. Her body tensed with fear when he suddenly wrapped his arm around her hips. “Let’s ask Donna what she thinks.” he said pulling her closer to him. He then looked up at her. “Do you know Rachael?”

Lacey swallowed nervously and nodded her head.

“Do you think I should go and have fun with her or stay and have fun here?” His hand slowly ran down her hip to her leg.

Lacey’s heart began to race as he gently stroked his hand up and down her leg. She looked down at him and smiled, she knew she could get her own back on Rachael with this one but knew that he meant he wanted fun with her. Evan and his friends sat in silence waiting for her to answer. Lacey knew it was time to leave now, she glanced at Mike standing behind the bar staring at her. His eyes pleading with her to answer Evan, she felt sorry for him but had to think about herself. Lacey looked back at Evan, she knew he was a bad man but what the hell, she didn’t care anymore. Lacey slapped his hand off her. “Go to Rachael.”

Evan’s friends gasped with surprise, none of the girls that worked there had ever turned him down. There was no reaction from Evan, he sat straight faced watching her walk away.

Lacey felt so good, something had snapped inside her, she wasn’t going to be anyone’s whore. She mouthed the word, sorry to Mike and blew him a kiss. When she opened the door, turned to look back at Evan and gave him a little wave then walked out the door and shut it behind her.

Lacey kicked off her shoes and ran down the corridor as fast as she could towards Rachael’s room. Out of breath she ripped her skirt and top off and slipped her jeans on. she frantically crawled around the floor looking for her pumps, she needed to get out quick. Just as she put her t-shirt on, the door opened and Evan walked in, he shut the door and leaned against it. He didn’t speak he just stared at her.

Lacey couldn’t breathe, she had never been so terrified of anything in her life than that moment. Panic set in as memories of the night in the alley raced through her mind, she knew he had a gun, was he going to kill her for not wanting to keep him company, had he come to rape her? Her legs buckled when Evan began to walk towards her. He grabbed her around her waist to stop her from falling and pulled her close to him. “Hello Lacey Jackson.” He growled.

Lacey’s legs gave way; her body fell limp against him. Her whole body began to shake with fear, so he had recognised her. “Jack.” She whimpered. She thought about him waiting in the back alley for her, she promised to leave if there was any trouble, but how could she, she couldn’t even stand up?

Evan pulled her up to steady her and raised her face to look at him. “I’ve been looking for you.” He picked her up and threw her limp body over his shoulder and carried through the corridor towards the back room. He flung the door open and took her over to the partitioned private corner of the room and dropped her on a large sofa and walked away.

Lacey rolled her head back, trying to control her breathing, she thought she was going to have a heart attack any second. She heard Evan tell Mike to go and get his friends another girl because he was going to spend his time with her. He came back with a mixture of drinks on a tray and closed the curtain behind him and sat on the end of the sofa.

“Well Lacey.” He said as he poured a drink, “did you think I wouldn’t recognise you after the other night?”

Lacey didn’t answer; she took the drink off him, knocked it back and flopped back on the sofa.

“Can you tell me, how you can go from being a street urchin to working here in two nights?”

“Rachael told me she had a date tonight and paid me to do her shift, I needed the money.” She mumbled.

Evan laughed. “Rachael, a date? She was going to be my fuck tonight that’s all.” He passed Lacey another drink and sat back. “How much did she pay you to do this shift for her?”

Lacey sat up and knocked her drink back again. “She offered me twenty pounds but I got thirty out of her.”

Evan choked on his drink. “How much?” He laughed. “Have you ever done this before?”

“No. She didn’t tell me what I was getting myself into, I thought I was just going to be a waitress for the night.” She watching Evan pour another drink, he looked lost in thought.

“Would you like another drink?” he asked.

She shook her head and moved to make herself comfortable.

Evan smiled a little and sighed, he sat back and stared at her for a while. “Do you know who I am?”

“Yes, Evan Durber.” She fiddled nervously with her hair. “But I didn’t know that until tonight.”

His brows raised with surprise. “So you’ve never heard my name before?”

“No, not until now. I met a man today, Jim, is he anything to do with you?”

Evan nodded his head and laughed, “Yes he is, he found you within an hour of me sending him to look for you, you really need to be more careful who you give your name to.”

“I know yeah.” She grimaced. “Will you tell him from me his chat up lines are crap.”

Evan could see Lacey wasn’t being so nervous around him now. Being with her was a refreshing change from any of the other girls he spoke to. They all knew who he was and would paw all over him and bitch and fight with each other for his attention. But Lacey didn’t have a clue who he was and she was just being herself. “Lacey, have you told the police what you saw the other night?”

“No I haven’t!” She frowned. “And I never will, it’s nothing to do with me.”

Evan cocked his head to one side. “Have you told anyone?”

Lacey’s thoughts turned to Jack, she had told him but she didn’t want to get him involved. “No, I haven’t, like I said it’s nothing to do with me or anyone else.”

Evan sat in silence looking her up and down, he was impressed with her and wanted to know more about her. He rubbed his face with both hands, poured another drink and sat back again. “Lacey, the girls here can earn up to five hundred pound a night.”

Lacey’s eyes widened. “What! she cried.

Evan laughed at her reaction. “Yes, but that would have to come with a fuck.” He leaned a little closer to her. “Now just hear what I’ve got to say. I will give you five hundred if you just stay here and spend time and talk with me.”

“W what, y you will give me that just to talk to you!” she stuttered.

Evan pulled his wallet out of his jacket pocket and counted five hundred pounds. He placed it on the table in front of her then glanced at his watch. “There you go, it’s ten-thirty now, you can take that off the table at three.”

Lacey puffed her cheeks, was this man for real? Five hundred pounds to talk! She looked across at him and nervously smiled, she didn’t know if she could trust him but she really needed that money. It was only one night; she wouldn’t have to see him again after this. Without speaking she held her glass out to him to pour her another drink.

“Well?” He asked pouring her another drink.

Lacey nodded. “Ok I’ll stay but just remember, I’m not like the girls here.”

Evan held his hand up as if to surrender. “Ok, whatever you say.” He laughed.

Lacey fell back on the sofa, she couldn’t believe that this was happening, all that money to just talk! In the back of her mind, she hoped he wasn’t playing her. She was now beginning to feel a little bit drunk and needed something to settle her empty stomach. If she carried on drinking with him, she would be legless when it was time for her to leave and was worried that he would take advantage of her. “Can I have something to eat please?”

Evan smiled. “What would you like?”

“Can I have a steak sandwich?” her mouth watered at the thought of it. “With friend onions.”

“You can have the whole damn menu if you want.” He opened the curtain and called Mike. “Would you like a dessert too?”

Lacey’s eyes widened. “Do you have chocolate cake?”

Evan nodded and asked Mike to call the kitchen with Lacey’s order.

Throughout the night Evan couldn’t quite get his head around Lacey, he was surprised how much he was enjoying her company. She sat cross legged on the sofa in her jeans and t-shirt, drinking Jack Daniels straight. He watched her devour her steak sandwich and chocolate cake in minutes like she hadn’t had a proper meal in her life. She talked to him like he was just another man off the street. Any other girl that accompanied him wanted champagne and expensive meals out, they spoke total shite and would agree with anything he said.

As the night wore on, they sat and talked about everything and anything. He asked her about her life and how she came to live on the streets. She told him that her mother was a drug addict and had died of an overdose when she was fifteen. She had never known her father and had no family to go to. Social services came to take her away but she ran off and had lived on the streets ever since. She shoplifted clothes and food and worked low paid cash in hand jobs to survive. Evan loved how open she was about her life, she made no excuses for what she did to survive. He asked her where she saw herself in years to come, the coldness that he saw in her eyes the night he met her in the alley returned when she answered. Telling him she never thought ahead, she took one day at a time, there were no opportunities for people like her to improve their way of life.

When Lacey asked Evans questions about him, he just told her, he was paying for their time together so he was the one that got to ask the questions, not her. He was giving nothing away about himself.

Their time together flew by and the next thing they knew, it was three in the morning.

“Well, my times up now.” Evan nodded towards the table where the money was. “Take it, it’s yours.”

Lacey sighed with relief, she thought he wouldn’t let her take it. She took the money off the table and rolled it up and pushed it in her jeans pocket. “Thank you.” She smiled and walked towards the curtain.

As Lacey walked away from him, for some strange reason, Evan didn’t want her to leave. He walked behind her, wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close to him. “I’ll double that money if you stay with me for the rest of the night in my bed.” He kissed the side of her neck.

Lacey shuddered as a tingle ran down her spine. “I’m nobody’s fuck.” she put her hands on his to move them away.

“Next time then, Lacey Jackson.” He whispered in her ear.

Lacey shook her head and walked away.

Evan’s heart sunk as he watched Lacey walk away, never in his life had he met anyone like her. He rubbed his face with both hands, feeling confused, what had she done to him? All he was clear on was that he wanted to see her again.

LOL, Evan does like her, he's never met anyone like her before and for her to reject him twice in one night is going to make him want her more. She may choose to be blind to things but she is no fool and does have some dignity :)
