Walking across the city towards the restaurant, Lacey began to feel nervous, her body shook all over as she sat on a bench to smoke a cigarette. It was alright to be like that now, now no one was around to see her like that. Already regretting her decision to work Rachael’s shift, she was close to walking away to go back to Jack. Lacey looked up at the sky in despair, what was she thinking? Life was already hard enough with the meagre wage Mike paid her each week to wash dishes every night. If she lost that job because of not turning up to work for him now, her life would be worse with no money. There was no way her and Jack would survive on his wage alone. Taking deep breaths to calm herself, Lacey eventually convinced herself that everything would be alright, she could do this, it was only for one night. Praying the rumours about the restaurant were untrue, she nervously carried on walking towards it.

When Lacey arrived at the restaurant, she stood in the doorway and looked around. Diners were already in there, to her, everything looked normal, they were all seated, eating their meals, talking quietly amongst themselves. The waitresses wore smart black skirts and crisp white blouses and all looked relaxed and happy as they spoke to the diners. Once again she felt confused, she was sure she had seen some of the girls wearing next to nothing walking about the place.

Mike saw a girl standing in the doorway and hurried across to her, he was about to ask what she wanted when he realised it was Lacey. He was surprised, he thought she scrubbed up well and was now curious to see how she looked dressed up. Mike gestured her to follow him.

Feeling a little less nervous now, Lacey followed Mike, in silence through a side door and walked along a corridor. Mike stopped by a door, he put his hand on the handle. “Rachael has left clothes in there for you. Has she told you how you are to behave tonight?”

Lacey shrugged her shoulders and shook her head. “No.”

Mike sighed and rolled his eyes. “You must always show the clients respect and call them sir. If anyone touches you while you’re serving them, keep a smile on your face and do not to move away, it will offend them. You are here for their pleasure so whatever they want from you, you give them what they ask for.”

Lacey closed her eyes and froze, her heart pounded through her chest, this is a restaurant she thought to herself.

“Are you listening to me!” Mike snapped.

She opened her eyes and cleared her throat. “Have I got to sleep with them?”

Mike laughed and opened Rachael’s changing room door. “Most of the time, yes. Some just come here to get their egos boosted from a beautiful girl.” He paused and eyed Lacey up and down. “Give them the attention they crave from you, tell them what they want to hear. Believe me, by the time you’ve finished sweet talking them, they will leave you a huge tip.” He held his hand out to Lacey and smiled. “Go and get changed, I’ll come back for you in a bit.”

Lacey slowly walked into Rachael’s changing room and felt like she was going to faint, it wasn’t just a changing room it was a bedroom. There was a large bed, a shower, a dressing table full of perfumes and makeup and a wardrobe.

When Mike closed the door behind her, she leaned against it and slowly slid down and sat on the floor staring open mouthed around the room. Lacey’s head was spinning, she had no idea that this was all here, she thought it was just a restaurant and now she knew the rumours were true. Her body shook with nerves; she didn’t know what to do now. Maybe she could stay a while and see what client she would get, she doubted anyone would want to sleep with her. She had seen several of the girls who worked there go into the kitchen area to get something to eat and they were stunning. There was no way she was on the same grade as them.

Lacey stood up and went over to the dressing table, she had noticed a bottle of vodka. There was a note stuck to it, Lacey couldn’t read properly, but she knew what the two short words were. “Have fun.” She read out loud. Lacey unscrewed the lid. “Yeah, I’ll have fun kicking your ass tomorrow bitch.” She grinned at the thought of it. Pouring herself a large vodka, Lacey knocked it back and decided to have a quick nosey inside the wardrobe. It was full of sexy little nighty’s and costumes, she held a maid’s costume against her and looked in the mirror, did a little wiggle, laughed and threw it back into the wardrobe. There was no way she would ever wear one of those.

Lacey had another drink of vodka and felt a little more relaxed. Getting dressed in the short black skirt and white low cut top Rachael had left on the bed for her. Lacey smiled, the top was quite tight, was it supposed to be like that or did she have bigger boobs than Racheal? After slipping on her black stockings and Racheal’s heeled shoes she checked herself in the mirror. Lacey was shocked with how sexy she felt, she had never dressed up in her life like that. The last time she had worn a skirt was when she was a child.

“Wow.” She mouthed as she ran her hands around her waist and hips. Having another drink, she smelt a few of the perfumes on the dressing table. There were so many of them and they all smelt so good. She refreshed her makeup, still keeping her look as natural as possible and quickly stuck her false nails on. They were cheap and didn’t feel very secure, she hoped they didn’t fall off too soon.

The door knocked and Mike shouted, telling her it was time to start her shift. Quickly brushing her hair and taking one last look at herself in the mirror, she rolled her shoulders. “You can do this girl.” She held her stomach and couldn’t make out whether it was churning with nerves or too much alcohol.

Mikes eyes widened with shock when he saw Lacey, she looked stunning. He couldn’t believe she was the same scruffy girl that washed dishes for him every night. He walked her along the back corridor of the restaurant and then through a side door into a dimly lit room with a bar. Lacey shook her head in disbelief, she didn’t even know that was there too.

Mike couldn’t make out if Lacey was nervous or not, if she was she wasn’t showing it but either way, he had to make sure she was alright. “Now there’s nothing to worry about, if you need me I will be here for you ok. Would you like a drink?”

Lacey nodded. “Vodka please.”

Mike laughed. “I meant a non-alcoholic drink.”

Lacey puffed her cheeks, she really wanted another vodka. “Orange juice please.” She sat on the barstool and looked around the room, there were three other girls working already.

“Lacey.” Mike passed her the orange juice. “Tonight you will be serving Evan Durber and his guests. He owns this place so he will know you are new. If you work well and impress him, you could work here full time.”

Lacey’s stomach churned with nerves. “Can’t one of the other girls serve him?”

“No, they have their own clients to serve, tonight your taking Rachael’s place and she serves Evan Durber.” Mike took something out of his pocket and opened his hand. On it was a small pink pill. “Here take this it will help you relax, most of the girls that work here take them. Because it’s your first night you can have this for free.”

For a split second, Lacey thought about taking it but she needed to keep her wits about her. If any of the clients wanted sex, she needed to get out quick. “No thank you.” she nervously smiled and sipped her juice. In a way, she was glad it wasn’t vodka, her head was spinning a little from the wine she had drunk with Jack and the vodka she had in Rachael’s room.

“Right Lacey.” Mike rested his hand on her leg. “You don’t have to use your real name here, so what would you like to be called tonight?”

Lacey glared at him. “I don’t know.” she moved his hand off her leg.

He held her shoulders and pushed them straight. “I think we’ll call you Donna, yes?”

Lacey rolled her eyes and laughed. “Ok, I’ll be Donna.”

“Please don’t roll your eyes and make sure you stand up straight tonight.” he moaned walking away from her.

Sitting back against the bar, Lacey watched how the other girls behaved with the clients they were serving. It didn’t look that bad, one man was stroking a girl’s backside over her skirt. She giggled like she was enjoying it and leaned against him, running her fingers through his hair. Another girl was sitting on a man’s knee with her arms wrapped around him while he was whispering in her ear and fondling her breast. The third girl left the room with a man, Lacey cringed, that was going to be her worst nightmare if someone wanted to sleep with her. Lacey had never slept with anyone before, the closest she had ever got to losing her virginity was with Jack and she didn’t want to lose it this way.

In a world of her own, trying her hardest to remember her way through the building if she had to make a run for it. Lacey didn’t realise that Evan Durber had entered the room and she should have greeted him.

Mike tapped her on the shoulder. “Do your job.” he growled quietly in her ear.

Lacey jumped off the stool and grimaced, Evan Durber was already sitting at his table with six guests. Her mind went blank, she suddenly didn’t know what to do, nervously licking her lips she looked to Mike for guidance but he had his back turned to her. Feeling a fool for ever thinking that she could work Rachael’s shift, Lacey knew it was time to leave now. This isn’t worth it, she thought to herself. She slammed her pen and pad on the bar and walked out of the bar.

Mike ran out after her. “Oi, what are you playing at, get back in there!” He grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

“You can’t make me go back.” She cried yanking her arm out of his grip. “I’m leaving!”

Mike sarcastically laughed. “Do you really want to mess the boss about?” He shook his head. “I don’t think so lady, he’s told me to bring you back.”

“I don’t care what he wants.” She pushed Mike against the wall. “Go and find him another girl because I’m gone.” She kicked her heels off and stormed down the corridor.

“Lacey please!” Mike cried. “If you don’t go back my jobs on the line.”

“Then you should have helped me when I needed it!”

Mike ran past her and stood in her way. “If you go back, whatever tips you get tonight I will match it out of my own pocket.”

Tiny beads of sweat were forming along Mikes forehead; he didn’t look well. Lacey thought he looked scared, what was he so afraid of, his boss Evan Durber? Lacey sighed and slumped against the wall. “Ok I’ll go back in but you better help me when I need it.”

Mike nodded. “Thank you, he would have had my head on a spike if you didn’t go back.”

“Surely he can’t be that bad?” Lacey walked back up the corridor and slipped her shoes back on.

“I’ll let you make your own mind up about him.” Mike mumbled as he held the door open for her.

Taking her pad and pen from the bar, Lacey ran her fingers through her hair and straightened her clothes. She smiled at Mike and took a deep breath, she cleared her throat as she walked towards Evan Durber’s table and asked them as clearly as she could what drinks they would like. Lacey didn’t look at any of them when she spoke, she didn’t want to make eye contact. She listened carefully to what they wanted, she had to do this from memory. She drew a stick man on the pad, making it look like he was writing their order. She jumped a little when one of the men wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her close to him asking her what her name was. Lacey gritted her teeth and forced a smile, she nearly told him her real name but corrected herself quickly and told him, it was Donna.

Lacey’s hands began to shake when she poured the drinks, she was pretty sure that she had read the labels right. If she had got it wrong, then everyone in the bar would know how stupid she was. Mike noticed her hands shaking and again offered her a pill to help her. Lacey was tempted but she decided against it.

When Lacey took the drinks over to the table, the men were quietly talking amongst themselves. As she passed the men their drinks, one of them looked up at her and thanked her. It took all her self-control not to react when she saw his face, it was the man she had seen that morning in Margret’s kitchen. He didn’t recognise her, he turned away and carried on with his conversation.

Lacey’s heart was pounding through her chest when she went back to the bar, she had never felt so vulnerable in her life. Keeping herself busy for a while, cleaning behind the bar before returning to the table to see if there was anything else that she could do for them. Lacy kept her head down, just in case the man recognised her. They gave her their order which was the same as the first. No one had complained about the first drinks she had given them so she must have done it right. Feeling a little more confident now, she poured the drinks, when she turned to take the drinks to their table, one of the men caught her eye, Lacey froze. It was the man who had the gun in the alley and he was staring straight at her.

Like I said before, Lacey turns a blind eye to everything going on around her, if it's nothing to do with her then it's none of her business. So you can imagine the shock when she realised that the restaurant is just a front to cover everything what really goes on in there :)
