When Lacey was discharged the next day from hospital, the aching in her stomach was easing, but was still very tired. She spent time with Evan looking up hotels where they could get married. Evan rang the hotel they had chosen and booked a couple of days there so they could spend some relaxing time together and check it out.

It was a beautiful country hotel and they both loved the place and spoke with the manager in detail exactly what they wanted. They were told that there was a space available in eight weeks and booked it.

When they arrived home, Lacey still suffered Evans paranoid ways but he would calm down every time she pulled him aside about it. Life together after she had been in hospital was slowly getting better for them. Charlotte was now expecting a baby so she and Lacey would go out shopping together for baby clothes, Evan had now appointed Mart as Lacey’s driver and guard. Lacey got on well with him, but didn’t build up the same friendship with him like she had done with Jim.

One evening when they were upstairs getting ready for bed, Evan lay on the bed watching Lacey get changed, she thought he’d been unusually quiet that day. “Lacey will you come here a minute?” he said patting the bed. Lacey climbed on the bed next to him and rolled onto her side, Evan lay his hand on her stomach, he loved feeling the babies moving around. “Do you know anything about your father?”

“No.” She looked up at him feeling confused. “Why’ve you brought him up?” Lacey didn’t know who her dad was and had never spoken to Evan about him.

Evan stared at her for a few seconds then took a deep breath. “Because I’ve found him.”

Lacey was shocked. “How would you know who he is, his name isn’t on my birth certificate?”

“Your mother’s name is Helen Jackson, isn’t it?”

Lacey sat up and rubbed her face. “Yes, why?”

“Well I asked Frank to do some digging around for me to see if he could find out who your father was. He got hold of some files from social services on you and your mother.”

Lacey’s heart began to race. “And?”

“Her husband’s name was in her file and Frank tracked him down.”

Lacey lay back on the bed in shock, she didn’t know her mother was married. “That doesn’t mean he’s my dad! Even if he is, why would you want to know, he never bothered with me?”

Evan lay on his side next to her. “Lacey, he didn’t know you existed.”

“How would you know that?” She gasped.

“Because Frank has spoken to him.”

Lacey sat bolt upright. “What!”

“Just hear me out.” Evan sat up and held her hands. “When Frank spoke to him about your mum, he told Frank the month and year he left her. If he is correct with that date, you were born seven months after he left.”

Lacey’s eyes began to fill with tears. “Did Frank believe him?”

Evan slowly nodded his head. “Yes he believed him, your dad was heartbroken said if he had known about you, he would have gone back for you because Helen was not fit to be a mother.”

Lacey sat in silence, her head was spinning, she didn’t know what to say.

Evan moved closer to her. “Lacey, I have something else to tell you.”

Lacey stared ahead of her. “What’s his name?”

“It’s Peter Jackson.” Evan replied.

Lacey half smiled as goose bumps ran over her body. “Peter Jackson.” She whispered.

Evan smiled and nodded, “But there’s one more thing.”

“Oh god what?”

“You have two older brothers.”

Lacey’s face scrunched up as tears rolled down her face. “I have brothers?”

“Yes, your father took them with him when he left your mum.” Evan wrapped his arms around Lacey as she began to sob.

“Does my dad want to see me?” She sniffled.

“Yes he does, do you want to see him?”

Lacey didn’t have to think twice. “Yes I do.”

Evan smiled and nodded, “Ok, I’ll ring Frank in the morning to see what he can arrange.

Lacey straddled over Evan and wrapped her arms around him and sobbed against his chest. All her life her mother had lied to her about her dad and she had always believed he didn’t want to know her.

Evan stroked his hands up and down her back, comforting her, He knew what it was like growing up without a dad, but at least her knew the truth about his. Ron Durber was a drunk that beat his wife and children. Evan remembered the day he walked out when he was seven years old, everyone was glad to see the back of him and they never saw him again.

Evan lay Lacey on the bed, she rolled onto her other side and Evan curled into her from behind, it was more comfortable for them to sleep like that now her baby bump was getting bigger.

The next day Evan spent time in his office. Lacey couldn’t settle, she was excited; all she could think about was that she had brothers and a dad that wanted to see her. To keep her mind occupied she wandered around the first floor of the house, thinking of which room she could sort out for the babies. She had her eye on the two guest rooms and went to see Evan to tell him about her ideas for them and hoped he would agree.

When Lacey walked into Evans office, he was talking to Frank on the phone and told him to hang on a second. “Frank’s with your dad right now and he desperately wants to meet you, do you want to see him today?”

Lacey gasped and nodded.

“Ok Frank, what time?” Evan asked then put the phone down. He looked at Lacey. “you’re going to meet your dad at four this afternoon.”

Lacey suddenly felt nervous. “Are you coming with me?”

Evan sat down and slumped his shoulders. “Sweetheart, I can’t I’m busy.”

“Please Evan.” Lacey could feel herself panicking a little. “I need you to come with me.”

Evan looked at Lacey standing by his desk, she looked like a frightened child. He closed his eyes and sighed. “Ok, I’ll come with you but if your visit goes on longer than an hour, I’ll have to leave”

Lacey sighed with relief. “Thank you,” she whispered.

“Now what did you want to see me for?” Evan asked.

Lacey held her hand out to him. “I’ve got an idea about the bedroom for the babies, follow me.”

As they walked upstairs, Lacey asked Evan if she could use the two guest rooms for the babies. She thought an archway could be knocked out on the wall between the rooms. One side could be used for a bedroom and the other as a play room. Then when the girls were old enough to want their own rooms, the archway could be closed off so there would be two rooms again.

“Wow.” Said Evan. “You’ve really thought this out haven’t you, but what if any of our friends stay over?”

Lacey grinned, she had already thought about that. “I would really like this floor to be closed off when the babies are born, I want this floor to be ours. I know the rooms on the second floor are smaller but guests can stay there. If we put a rope barrier across the stairs that lead to the second floor the guests can use the back stairs to get to their rooms.”

Evan thought for a while. “Follow me.” He walked to the door that led onto the back stairs. “We can have this door sealed off so no one can enter our floor from the back. I can’t see it being a problem for anyone using the back stairs but Ralph.”

Lacey giggled. “Put a chairlift in for him.”

Evan looked at her in shock. “Are you trying to get me shot, Ralph would crawl up the stairs before he used a chairlift!”

“So is this gonna be a yes then?” Lacey smiled her sweetest smile and batted her eyelashes.

Evan gazed down at her and smiled, it was good to see she was finally accepting that his house was now her home. How could he refuse. “If that’s what you want, then we’ll do it.” He hugged her and kissed the top of her head. “So that’s another thing on my agenda.”

Lacey threw her arms around him. “Thank you.” She squealed with delight then ran to the bedroom to get ready to meet her father. Choosing to go casual, she put her pregnancy jeans on and a loose-fitting cream top. Lacey stood in front of the full-length mirror and rubbed her stomach, even though Evan always told her she was beautiful, she thought she looked like a baby hippo.

On the drive to her father’s house, Lacey was shocked when she realised how close he lived. He lived half an hour’s drive from the city she had lived in for the past five years and couldn’t help but think what a coincidence it was. Her father had moved over a hundred miles away to get away from her mother and when she died, Lacey had run in the same direction. Strange, she thought to herself.

When they finally arrived at Peter Jackson’s house, Mart parked up behind them, he was there if Evan had to leave, so he could take Lacey back home.

As they got out of the car, Lacey shook with nerves and gripped Evan’s arm. “I’m scared, what do I call him?”

“I don’t know, just call him whatever feels right.” He said as he hugged her. “Come on sweetheart, let’s go and meet your dad.”

Lacey took a few deep breaths and nodded, as they approached the front door a short woman with long blond hair opened it. “Are you Lacey?” she asked.

Lacey nodded.

“I’m Joan, Peters wife, come in.” She smiled gesturing Lacey to follow her.

Lacey swallowed nervously, held Evan’s hand and followed Joan into her house. Lacey stood in the living room doorway, her heart began to race as tears welled in her eyes. Standing in front of the fireplace was the tall dark haired figure of her father. Her brothers were sitting on the sofa and both stood up when they saw her.

Peter Jackson gasped when he saw Lacey, she was the image of her mother when she was younger. Tears streamed down his face. “Lacey.” He whispered, holding his arms out to her.

Evan let go of Lacey’s hand and stepped back, she looked at her brothers then back at her father and slowly began to walk towards him.

Peter still held his arms out to Lacey, he wanted to hold his daughter in his arms. “I’m so sorry, If I had known about you I would have come back for you.”

Tears streamed down Lacey’s face, she could barely breath andthrew her arms around her father’s neck, Peter wrapped his arms around her and hugged his daughter for the first time, both began to sob.

Evan followed Jean into the kitchen, he thought it would be best to let them have some time together. He glanced back into the living room at Lacey and her father, it was an emotional moment. Evan smiled to himself, he loved Lacey with all his heart and finding her family for her, made him feel good about himself. Even though Lacey didn’t know yet, about the plans he was making for their future together, he knew now he was making the right decision.

Evan had to redeem himself somehow, she's never thought about going to look for her dad, she didn't know his name and thought he wasn't bothered about her :)

Evan had to make it up to Lacey somehow didn't he and what better way than to find her father, I guess if her dad didn't want to know, Evan would never have told her about him to save her the heartache :)
